Halo Campaign Evolved launched early access on July 23, 2026 for Premium Edition owners. The moment they hit Play on Steam, many were greeted by the Digital Story & Art Collection — not the game.

Instead of dropping into Master Chief’s boots, Steam kept defaulting to the art book viewer as its launch target. Players had no clear reason why. Reports flooded the Halo subreddit within minutes.

Why Does Steam Open the Art Book Instead of the Game?

The Digital Story & Art Collection is its own separate application. It ships with the Premium Edition and includes artwork, a game manual, a short story, and even background music while you scroll through it.

The problem was simple: Steam was treating the art book as the default launch target. Click Play, get art. Not ideal when you paid $69.99 to play the game five days early.

Halo Studios confirmed the issue within 40 minutes of the first reports. A fix was pushed that only required a Steam client restart to take effect.

How to Fix the Halo Campaign Evolved Artbook Issue on Steam

There are two ways to fix this. Start with Method 1. If that does not work, try Method 2.

Method 1: Restart the Steam Client (Official Fix)

Halo Studios pushed a server-side patch shortly after launch. All you need to do is:

1. Fully close Steam — not just minimize it. Right-click the Steam icon in the taskbar and click Exit.
2. Reopen Steam.
3. Click Play on Halo Campaign Evolved.

For most players, this is all it takes. The game should launch normally after the client restarts.

Method 2: Disable the Digital Story & Art Collection DLC

Verify Your Game Files
