How to Complete The Killing Field Quest and Get Chillrend
Learn how to complete The Killing Field quest in Oblivion Remastered and earn Chillrend, one of the best early-game shortswords, by protecting Valus Odiil’s sons.
One of the best things about The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is that quest length and rewards aren’t always proportional.
Sometimes a short, simple mission can hook you up with seriously powerful gear — and The Killing Field quest is a perfect example.
All you need to do is survive a few waves of goblins, but if you pull it off perfectly, you’ll snag one of the best early-game weapons in the entire game: Chillrend.
Here’s how to do it.
Starting The Killing Field in Oblivion Remastered
- Head to Chorrol.
- Enter through the South Gate and take an immediate right.
- Look for the first building on your right — it’s the Grey Mare Inn.
Inside, you’ll meet Valus Odiil, a worried old man asking for help to protect his sons.
- Talk to him and agree to help.
- Your map will update with the sons’ location — head over there and speak to them.
They’ll then lead you to Odiil Farm, where the real challenge begins.
How to Get Chillrend
When the brothers arrive at the farm, get ready — the goblin attack will begin!
You’ll face three to four waves of goblins coming from different directions.
Here’s the important part: both sons must survive if you want to get Chillrend.
If either of them dies, you’ll only get 75 Gold as a reward — which is a major downgrade.
Pro Tip:
- Play aggressively.
- Rush at the goblins as soon as they appear.
- Keep them distracted and far away from the sons.
- Use powerful area-of-effect spells or quick melee attacks to finish the goblins fast.
Save your game right before the battle begins so you can reload if something goes wrong — trust me, it’s way better than having to follow the brothers back to the farm after every death.
Completing the Quest
Once all goblin waves are defeated:
- Return to the Grey Mare Inn.
- Report back to Valus Odiil.
If both sons survived, he’ll reward you with Chillrend, a magical shortsword that deals extra frost damage — an absolute beast for early-to-mid game fights, especially when paired with a good shield.
If even one son dies, sadly, you’ll only walk away with 75 Gold. Ouch.
Why Chillrend is Worth It
- Damage: Strong base damage plus frost enchantment.
- Style: One of the coolest-looking shortswords early on.
- Utility: Freezes enemies solid and combos beautifully with fast shield blocks.
