Oblivion Remastered: How To Complete the Misdirection Quest (Full Walkthrough)

Need help with the Misdirection quest in Oblivion Remastered? Here’s a full guide on stealing Hrormir’s Icestaff, spying on Lex, and completing the mission.
Misdirection is one of the standout Thieves Guild quests in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and it kicks off once you’ve fenced 300 Gold and spoken to S’Krivva. The job? Steal a magical staff, spy on Captain Hieronymus Lex, and set things up so the Gray Fox can slip away from the Imperial Watch’s radar.
Let’s break down exactly how to handle every step without getting caught.

Where To Find Methredhel During Misdirection
After triggering the quest, fast travel to the Imperial City and bribe a local beggar to locate Methredhel. She’s hiding out in Dynari Amnis’ house in the Talos Plaza District.
Once you talk to Methredhel, she explains the plan:
- Sneak into the Arcane University
- Steal Hrormir’s Icestaff
- Then, set Lex up to fail.
Easy, right? Well… not exactly.

How To Steal the Hrormir’s Icestaff
Fast travel to the Arcane University.
- If you’re in the Mages Guild and high enough rank, portals make this way easier.
- If you’re not, you’ll need to sneak your way through.
Head through the Council Chambers while avoiding (or charming) any busybody mages like Irlav Jarol. Try to portal-hop before they can kick you out.
Inside the Arch-Mage’s quarters, grab Hrormir’s Icestaff and leave a note on the table. Classic Thieves Guild move: steal it, then rub it in.
Return the staff to Methredhel to get your next orders.

Where To Find Hieronymus Lex and Spy on Him
Now, Methredhel sends you to spy on Hieronymus Lex.
- Head to the Waterfront and tail him around the shacks.
Eventually, a Dremora will show up, delivering secret orders. Lex will drop a scroll — your chance to grab it and haul back to Methredhel.
Pro tip: Stay sneaky but don’t get too close and spook the guards.
How To Return the Hrormir’s Icestaff
Almost done! After reporting to Methredhel, your final task is to return the stolen staff without getting caught.
- Go to Ontus Vanin’s house late at night.
- Lockpick your way inside (it’s a hard lock at the front door).
- Head upstairs, pick the easier door lock, and place the staff inside the chest.
Careful not to wake Ontus — he’s not the forgiving type.
Misdirection Quest Rewards
After everything’s done, report back to S’Krivva in Bravil and claim your reward:
300 Gold and a step closer to rising through the Thieves Guild ranks.
