How to Complete the Shrine of Clavicus Vile in Oblivion Remastered

Take on Clavicus Vile’s tough quest in Oblivion Remastered by defeating Umbra and choosing between her legendary sword or the Masque of Clavicus Vile. Here’s how to get it done.
Clavicus Vile—aka the Prince of Trickery and Bargains—has a brutal challenge waiting for players in Oblivion Remastered. To complete his shrine quest, you’ll need to hunt down and defeat one of the strongest enemies in the game: Umbra.
In return, Clavicus offers the Masque of Clavicus Vile, a heavy-armor helmet that buffs your Personality stat. But is the trade worth it?
Let’s walk through how to start the quest, where to find Umbra, and what your choices mean at the end.
🗺️ How to Start Clavicus Vile’s Shrine Quest
To find the Shrine of Clavicus Vile, head southwest of the Imperial City. But be ready to part with some coin—you’ll need to offer 500 gold just to speak with the statue.
Once you pay up, Clavicus will speak and assign you a task: find and retrieve the sword of Umbra, a powerful weapon that contains her soul.
Clavicus gives a clue, suggesting players begin the search at Pell’s Gate, but there’s a much faster way to get straight to the action.

⚔️ Where to Find Umbra (and What You’re In For)
Skip the long search and fast-travel directly to Vindasel, an Ayleid Ruin just southeast of Clavicus Vile’s shrine. This is where Umbra is holed up.
Here’s what to expect:
- The ruins are filled with basic enemies like rats and mudcrabs.
- There’s a poison gas chamber, so move carefully.
- Eventually, you’ll reach Umbra’s chamber.

You can talk to her briefly, but the conversation will quickly turn into a boss fight. She’s a level 50 powerhouse, so unless you’re well-geared and built for damage, this won’t be easy.
Pro Tip: Can’t win in direct combat? Climb onto one of the pillars in her chamber and cheese the fight by sniping her with ranged attacks.
Once she’s down, loot her body for the Umbra Sword—a fan-favorite weapon that’s absolutely worth keeping if you prefer power over Personality boosts.

🎭 Masque of Clavicus Vile vs. Keeping the Umbra Sword
Once you have Umbra’s sword, head back to Clavicus Vile’s shrine. Here’s where the choice comes in:
- Give Clavicus the sword: He’ll reward you with the Masque of Clavicus Vile, a heavy-armor helm that boosts Personality—but it’s widely considered one of the weakest Daedric Artifacts.
- Keep the Umbra Sword: You’ll still complete the quest (yes, really), and keep one of the best swords in the game.
So unless you’re strictly collecting artifacts or need the Masque to finish a specific storyline (like Blood of the Daedra), most players opt to keep the sword.
