TL;DR
- Island 1 is the Lighthouse — your tutorial zone and the only area available when you start.
- Pick up free clams first. Eat one, sell the rest to the Keeper for your starting cash.
- Buy the Basic Fishing Rod ($3), then the Hotdog Lure ($1) to catch bigger creatures faster.
- Upgrade your knife at the anvil next to the lighthouse door as soon as you can afford it.
- Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper to start the main quest — he has a spider crab problem.
- Buy a Beer Can ($12), give it to the Keeper, get the Empty Beer Can back, and use it as bait to summon the Spider Crab boss.
- Kill the Spider Crab, return its meat to the Keeper, get the boat keys, buy the Radar ($10), and leave.
- Do not buy the Radar before the boat keys — the quest order matters.

What Is Island 1 in How to Fish?
Island 1 is the Lighthouse starting area — the first and only location you have access to when you begin How to Fish. You and your friends crash onto a small island, stumble up to a lighthouse, and find yourself with nothing but the clothes on your back and some clams lying on the ground nearby.
The Lighthouse is intentionally limited. The fish are small, the money is modest, and the equipment available is basic. That is by design. Island 1 teaches you the core loop — catch, kill, sell, upgrade — before the game opens up and things get much harder. Do not rush past it. Learn the mechanics here and you will be in a much stronger position when you reach Islands 2 and beyond.
If you are completely new to the game and have not played at all yet, read our How to Fish beginner’s guide first. It covers the full core loop, trick shots, boss tips, and co-op advice in detail. This island guide assumes you know the basics and want a step-by-step walkthrough of exactly what to do here.
Step 1 — Pick Up the Free Clams Immediately
The moment you land on Island 1, look around the starting area near the lighthouse. There are free clams scattered on the ground — you do not need a rod to collect them, just walk over them and press E to pick them up.
Clams serve two purposes. Eat one if you need food — hunger is a mechanic on the island and clams satisfy it for free. Then throw or sell the rest to the Lighthouse Keeper for your very first cash. You feed items to the Keeper by throwing them toward him (use Q to throw what you are holding in his direction). He pays you for them.
This is the fastest way to get your first few dollars without spending any time fishing. Do not ignore the clams. Collecting them all at the start and selling them in a batch gives you enough to immediately buy your first rod.

Step 2 — Buy the Basic Fishing Rod and Start Catching
Head to the equipment board near the lighthouse and buy the Basic Fishing Rod for $3. This is your first proper piece of gear. It comes with a free lure attached, so you can start casting immediately without buying bait.
Walk to the water and cast in. Island 1 gives you brown crabs, shrimp, and the occasional lobster as your starting catches. Pull them onto land, switch off the rod, and kill them with your bare hands or whatever weapon you have. Then sell them to the Keeper for cash.
The creatures here are small and not worth much individually. That is fine. This is where you learn how casting, reeling, and killing all connect before the game throws anything dangerous at you.
Step 3 — Buy the Hotdog Lure to Catch Bigger Creatures
Once you have a few dollars from your first catches, spend $1 on the Hotdog Lure from the shop. This small upgrade pulls in bigger and more profitable creatures from the water — including rock crabs and lobsters that sell for noticeably more than the starting shrimp and brown crabs.
The Hotdog Lure pays for itself almost immediately. At $1 it is the cheapest meaningful purchase on Island 1 and one of the highest value-per-dollar upgrades in the early game. Buy it before you start spending money on weapons or lures for the boss fight.

Step 4 — Buy Brass Knuckles or the Knife, and Sharpen the Knife
Once you have money coming in from your first catches, it is time to get a real weapon. You have two options early on the Lighthouse island.
- Brass Knuckles — Fast and cheap. They roughly double your punch damage over bare fists and are immediately useful for killing early catches quickly. A solid choice if you want the fastest first upgrade.
- Knife — Slightly slower than knuckles but deals more damage per hit. The knife has an important extra feature: you can sharpen it at the anvil next to the lighthouse door to upgrade its damage to 20. A sharpened knife will make the Spider Crab boss fight considerably easier.
If you buy the knife, do not forget the anvil. It is easy to miss — look for it right next to the lighthouse entrance. Sharpen the knife as soon as you can afford to. An unsharpened knife is only marginally better than your fists. A fully sharpened knife at damage 20 is a reliable tool for the first boss.
Step 5 — Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper About the Main Quest
The Lighthouse Keeper is the main NPC on Island 1 and the key to your entire progression on this island. Talk to him early and talk to him often. He will tell you about a problem he has: a long-legged spider crab has been stealing his beer.
This conversation kicks off the main quest chain for Island 1. Without completing it you cannot get the boat keys, and without the boat keys you cannot leave. Everything on Island 1 is building toward this single quest.
Some quest stages only advance after you return to the Keeper and talk to him again — so if something feels stuck, go back and speak to him before assuming you missed a step.
Step 6 — Buy a Beer Can and Start the Spider Crab Quest
Once the Keeper has told you about the spider crab, your next job is to buy a Beer Can from the shop for $12. This is the key item for summoning the first boss.
Take the Beer Can to the Lighthouse Keeper and give it to him. He drinks it and hands you back the Empty Beer Can. This empty can is your Spider Crab bait — do not throw it away or sell it by mistake.
Before you use the bait, make sure you are actually ready to fight the Spider Crab. You should have at minimum a sharpened knife or brass knuckles in your inventory. Do not summon the Spider Crab with just your bare hands. Many players make this mistake — the empty can is easy to get, but the crab will simply outlast you if you have no weapon to finish it with.

Step 7 — How to Beat the Spider Crab (First Boss)
The Spider Crab is the boss that gates your exit from Island 1. It is the first and easiest boss in the game, but it can still catch new players off guard if they rush in unprepared.
How to Summon the Spider Crab
Equip the Empty Beer Can as your bait on the fishing rod and cast into the water from the dock or shore area. The Spider Crab will emerge when you reel in — treat it like a normal catch to start with, then the boss encounter begins once it is on land.
Spider Crab Fight Strategy
The Spider Crab is fast and hits harder than standard creatures. Here is how to fight it cleanly:
- Fight around the rocks and dock, not in the open. Using terrain to break the crab’s line of sight and interrupt its charge path makes the fight much more manageable.
- Bait it into charging at you, then step sideways to dodge. The crab will stun itself briefly after missing a charge. That window is when you attack.
- Hit it two to four times while it is stunned, then back off. Do not get greedy. One or two extra hits can get you caught by the next charge and take serious damage.
- Watch the white bar under the health pool. This is the escape timer. If that bar runs all the way down before you kill the crab, the boss escapes and you have to start the whole encounter again from scratch — bait, lure, and all. Keep pressure on it and do not let fights drag out too long.
- If it starts dragging you toward the water, move uphill or run immediately. Getting pulled into the water by the crab resets your position at a disadvantage.
With a sharpened knife at damage 20, the Spider Crab should go down without too much difficulty in a handful of attack windows. With just bare fists, the fight becomes extremely drawn out and the escape timer will likely run out before you can finish it.
After Killing the Spider Crab
Once the Spider Crab is dead, pick up the Spider Crab meat or shell it drops. This is the quest item. Do not eat it or sell it. Take it back to the Lighthouse Keeper and give it to him by throwing it toward him (Q). This completes the first quest and he rewards you with the boat keys.
If you kill the Spider Crab but the Keeper does not unlock the next step — check your inventory. You are almost certainly still carrying the quest item. Return to him and try again.
Step 8 — Buy the Radar Before You Leave
After getting the boat keys, look for the Radar near the Lighthouse Keeper — it costs $10 and a lot of new players miss it entirely because they are too excited to get on the boat.
The Radar is one of the most important items in the game. It shows you coordinates and helps you navigate toward your next destination. Without it, you are sailing blind across the open water hoping to find the next island. With it, you follow the signal and arrive where you need to be.
Buy the Radar before you board the boat. $10 is easy to afford by the time you have completed the Spider Crab quest, and it saves you a significant amount of confusion and backtracking on every island to come.
What to Buy on Island 1 — Priority Order
Here is the cleanest sequence for spending your money on the Lighthouse island, from first purchase to leaving:
- Basic Fishing Rod — $3 (buy immediately after collecting the free clams)
- Hotdog Lure — $1 (buy as soon as you have your first few dollars from early catches)
- Brass Knuckles or Knife (buy one as soon as you can afford it — sharpen the knife at the anvil if you go that route)
- Beer Can — $12 (buy once you are ready to fight the Spider Crab)
- Radar — $10 (buy immediately after receiving the boat keys from the Keeper)
That is the complete shopping list for Island 1. Do not spend money on anything not listed here during your first playthrough. The Lighthouse island shop also sells items you will not need until later — skip them for now and save your coins.
What Creatures Can You Catch on Island 1?
Island 1 has a small but complete set of starting creatures. Here is what you will find with the basic rod and lure setup:
- Clam — Found on the ground near the shore. Picked up by hand, not fished. Eat for food or sell to the Keeper for starting cash.
- Shrimp — Your first rod catch. Small, quick to kill, low sell value. Good for learning the cast and reel basics.
- Brown Crab — Slightly tougher than shrimp, slightly more valuable. Standard early catch.
- Blue Crab — A step up from the Brown Crab in value. Worth catching once you have a weapon to kill it faster.
- Lobster — The highest-value standard creature on Island 1. Has 85 health so it takes more effort than the smaller catches, but it pays noticeably more.
- Spider Crab — The boss. Only summoned with the Empty Beer Can bait from the Keeper quest. Not part of the normal fishing pool.
Each creature on Island 1 also has a rare Drip variant — a shiny version with special cosmetic markings. These are worth more and count toward the Fishipedia achievement. If you see a creature that looks different from the others, that is your rare variant. Catch and sell it, but note which creature it was so you can track your collection progress.
Common Island 1 Mistakes to Avoid
- Eating the Spider Crab drop — The meat or shell the boss drops is a quest item. Hand it to the Keeper before you do anything else with it.
- Skipping the anvil — If you bought the knife, sharpen it at the anvil by the lighthouse door before fighting the Spider Crab. An unsharpened knife is barely better than fists.
- Summoning the Spider Crab without a weapon — Get at least a knife or brass knuckles before using the Empty Beer Can bait.
- Ignoring the free clams — They are your fastest source of starting money and cost nothing to collect. Pick them all up at the start of the session.
- Forgetting the Radar — It is easy to get the boat keys and run straight to the boat in excitement. Buy the $10 Radar from the Keeper first or you will be sailing blind.
- Letting the escape timer run out during the boss fight — Watch the white bar under the Spider Crab’s health pool. If it empties, the boss escapes and you have to redo the entire encounter including setting up the bait.
Can You Play Island 1 in Co-op?
Yes — Island 1 works fine in co-op with up to 4 players. With friends, the early money grind goes faster because everyone can fish and sell simultaneously. A natural co-op split on the Lighthouse island is one or two players focused on catching crabs and lobsters while another talks to the NPCs and tracks the quest chain.
For the Spider Crab fight in co-op, have everyone ready and spread out around the area before the bait goes in. The crab has more targets to pick from with multiple players, which means individual players take less punishment. Decide in advance who is picking up the Spider Crab drop after the fight — the last thing you want is for it to accidentally get eaten or thrown in the water by a teammate. If you want to know more about how co-op works across the whole game, our How to Fish controls guide covers the invite system and co-op input setup in full.
How Long Does Island 1 Take?
For a first-time player taking their time, Island 1 takes roughly 20 to 40 minutes. That includes learning the cast and reel mechanics, building up enough money for the knife and beer can, completing the Spider Crab quest, and getting the Radar before leaving.
Experienced players or those doing a speedrun can clear Island 1 in under 10 minutes by collecting clams, spending exactly $60 on the rod, knife, and beer can, killing the Spider Crab immediately, and heading straight for the next island. There is even a Bean achievement for completing the entire game in under one hour — which requires moving through the Lighthouse extremely fast.
For your first playthrough, do not rush. Island 1 is the best place to get comfortable with the casting angle, the tension pulsing, the throw mechanic (Q to throw items), and how the kill-and-sell loop actually flows. Everything on every later island is built on the same foundations you learn here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the boat keys on Island 1 in How to Fish?
Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper to start his quest about the Spider Crab. Buy a Beer Can from the shop for $12 and give it to the Keeper — he will hand you back an Empty Beer Can. Use the empty can as bait on your fishing rod to summon the Spider Crab boss. Kill it, pick up the spider crab drop, and return it to the Keeper by throwing it to him (Q). He gives you the boat keys as your reward. Then buy the Radar for $10 from the Keeper before you board the boat.
What is the anvil next to the lighthouse door used for?
The anvil is used to sharpen your knife, increasing its damage up to 20. This makes it significantly more effective for killing creatures and for the Spider Crab boss fight. It is easy to walk past on your first visit — look for it directly beside the lighthouse entrance. If you bought the knife, always stop at the anvil first before fishing or fighting anything.
What happens if the Spider Crab escapes during the boss fight?
The Spider Crab has a white bar beneath its health pool that acts as an escape timer. If that bar empties before you kill the crab, it retreats back into the water and the encounter resets. You will need to set up the bait again from scratch using another Empty Beer Can — which means buying another Beer Can, giving it to the Keeper, and getting the empty version back. Keep pressure on the Spider Crab during the fight and do not let damage windows go to waste.
Do I need to do anything else on Island 1 before moving on?
For the story, all you need is the Spider Crab quest completion and the boat keys. Before leaving, buy the Radar from the Lighthouse Keeper for $10 — it is essential for navigating to the next island. You can optionally sharpen your knife fully, collect all creature types for your encyclopedia, and find any rare Drip variant creatures for completion purposes. But none of that is required to progress. Get the keys, get the Radar, and move on to Island 2.
