    Happy Ghast in Minecraft 2

    TL;DR – Last updated September 2026 (Minecraft Java 26.2 / Bedrock 26.35)

    • The Happy Ghast was added in the Chase the Skies update (Java 1.21.6 / Bedrock 1.21.90, June 2025) and is unchanged through all 2026 versions including Java 26.2 and Bedrock 26.35.
    • It is Minecraft’s first rideable flying mob in survival mode — it carries up to 4 players at once.
    • You cannot find a Happy Ghast in the wild. You must grow one from a Dried Ghast block found in the Nether.
    • Place the Dried Ghast in water in the Overworld. After 20 minutes it becomes a Ghastling. After another 20 minutes it becomes a Happy Ghast.
    • Feed Snowballs to the Ghastling to speed up growth. In Java Edition each Snowball cuts remaining time by 10%; in Bedrock Edition 10 Snowballs cause instant growth.
    • Craft a Harness (3 Leather + 2 Glass + 1 Wool) and equip it on the Happy Ghast to ride it.
    • Up to 4 players can ride at once. The first player to mount controls the direction.
    • The Happy Ghast is not fireproof — keep it away from lava.

The Ghast has been one of Minecraft’s most iconic mobs since the beginning. A massive wailing creature in the Nether, hurling fireballs and striking fear into every player who hears that cry. For years the idea of riding one seemed like pure fantasy. Then came the Chase the Skies update — released on June 17, 2025 as Java Edition 1.21.6 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 — and Mojang made it real.

The Happy Ghast is a passive, friendly version of the classic Ghast. It does not shoot fireballs. It does not attack you. It smiles. And with a Harness equipped, up to four players can ride it through the skies of any dimension. It is the first rideable flying mob in Minecraft survival mode — and this guide covers every step to get one for yourself. All information is verified current as of Java 26.2 and Bedrock 26.35 (September 2026). The Happy Ghast mechanics have not changed in any 2026 Minecraft update.

    What Is the Happy Ghast?

The Happy Ghast is a completely passive mob. Where the standard Ghast shoots fireballs and howls, the Happy Ghast floats peacefully, makes soft sounds, and follows players who are holding Snowballs or a Harness. It measures 4×4×4 blocks, making it one of the largest mobs in the game. A group of Happy Ghasts is officially called a chuckle of Happy Ghasts.

Unlike the hostile Ghast, the Happy Ghast is not immune to fire or lava. This is a critical difference. Keep it away from lava at all times — especially if you take it into the Nether.

The Happy Ghast does not spawn naturally anywhere in the world. Every single one must be raised by a player starting from a Dried Ghast block. It also cannot be bred — each one you want requires its own Dried Ghast from scratch. The process takes time but it is not complicated once you know what to do.

Step 1 — Get a Dried Ghast Block

The journey starts in the Nether. The Dried Ghast is a small grey block with a sad frowning face. It looks like a tiny skull cube. There are three ways to get one.

Method 1: Find It in the Soul Sand Valley

This is the most reliable and direct method. Head to the Nether and find the Soul Sand Valley biome — it is easy to spot by the grey-blue soul sand and soul soil ground, along with the blue soul fire flames. Look for Nether Fossils, which are large white structures made entirely of bone blocks sticking out from the ground.

Dried Ghast blocks have a 33% chance (1 in 3) of generating next to a Nether Fossil. Search around the base and sides of these bone structures. The Dried Ghast is small and can be easy to miss, so look carefully. Once you spot one, break it with your hand or any tool — it drops instantly and always drops itself.

Watch out for Skeletons in the Soul Sand Valley as they spawn there and will shoot at you. Bring a Shield. Our complete guide to getting to the Nether covers preparation and survival for first-time Nether explorers.

Method 2: Craft a Dried Ghast

If you cannot find one naturally or want more than the fossils nearby provide, you can craft a Dried Ghast. The recipe is:

    • 1 Soul Sand — placed in the center slot
    • 8 Ghast Tears — placed in all surrounding slots

Soul Sand is abundant in the Soul Sand Valley and also found near the lava sea in the Nether. Ghast Tears are dropped by Ghasts when they are killed — each Ghast drops 0 to 1 Ghast Tear normally, but with a Looting III sword this increases to 0 to 4. Ghasts spawn in most open Nether biomes except the Crimson Forest and Warped Forest.

Killing Ghasts safely is the hardest part of this method. The easiest way is to reflect their fireballs back at them by hitting the fireball with a sword, shovel, or even your fist when it gets close. A well-timed hit sends the fireball straight back and kills the Ghast in one shot. Alternatively use a Bow from a distance.

    Method 3: Barter with Piglins

You can also get a Dried Ghast by bartering with Piglins. Throw a Gold Ingot at a Piglin (or right-click them holding one) and they will toss back a random item. Dried Ghasts have a roughly 2.13% chance per Gold Ingot barter. This is a low probability so it is not the most efficient method, but if you are already doing Piglin bartering for other resources, you may get one as a bonus.

Always wear at least one piece of Gold Armor around Piglins to avoid being attacked. Piglin Brutes attack regardless of your gold armor, so watch out for those in Bastion Remnants. Our guide on how to get and upgrade Netherite armor can help you gear up before heading into the Nether.

Step 2 — Rehydrate the Dried Ghast into a Ghastling

Once you have your Dried Ghast block, bring it back to the Overworld. You do not have to use the Overworld — you can rehydrate it anywhere — but the Overworld is the safest option with the least fire and lava risk nearby.

How to Rehydrate the Dried Ghast

Place the Dried Ghast block somewhere solid and then submerge it in water. You can use a Water Bucket to waterlog it in place, or dig a small pool and place the block inside it. As soon as the water covers the Dried Ghast, green particles will begin appearing and the process starts.

The rehydration takes 20 minutes total and goes through four visible stages you can watch in real time:

    • 5 minutes — Partially hydrated. The face expression begins to shift slightly.
    • 10 minutes — Mostly hydrated. The face is noticeably less sad. The block gets brighter.
    • 15 minutes — Hydrated. The face is almost happy now.
    • 20 minutes — The block transforms into a Ghastling, which immediately floats up out of the water as a baby mob.

    Important Rules During Rehydration

    • Do not remove the water. If the water is removed at any stage, the Dried Ghast slowly reverts back to its dry state at the same rate it was hydrating. You will lose all progress.
    • Do not mine the Dried Ghast while it is hydrating. Breaking it during rehydration resets it completely back to the default dry stage.
    • Place it somewhere safe before you start — somewhere you can leave it for 20 minutes without accident.

Build a small contained pool, place the Dried Ghast inside, fill it with water buckets, and then go do something else for 20 minutes. The process is hands-off once the water is in place.

Step 3 — Grow the Ghastling into a Happy Ghast

After 20 minutes in water, the Dried Ghast becomes a Ghastling — a small, baby version of the Happy Ghast. It floats peacefully around the area and cannot be harnessed or ridden yet. You need to wait for it to grow into an adult.

    Natural Growth Time

Without any help, the Ghastling takes another 20 minutes to mature into a full adult Happy Ghast on its own. That makes the total time from Dried Ghast block to rideable Happy Ghast about 40 minutes without feeding.

    Speed Up Growth with Snowballs

You can speed up the Ghastling’s growth by feeding it Snowballs. The effect differs by edition:

    • Java Edition: Each Snowball reduces the Ghastling’s remaining growth time by 10%.
    • Bedrock Edition: 10 Snowballs fed to a newly-spawned Ghastling causes instant growth to an adult Happy Ghast.

Snowballs are dropped when you break Snow blocks with a Shovel. One Snow block gives 4 Snowballs. Head to any snowy biome and collect as many as you can before you start the growth process.

    What the Ghastling Follows

The Ghastling occasionally follows nearby players or specific friendly mobs within a range of 16 blocks. It prioritizes players but will also follow adult Happy Ghasts, horses, cats, dogs, and most other non-hostile non-aquatic mobs — useful to know when setting up a safe growing area. It does not follow ambient mobs like bats, aquatic mobs, or hostile monsters.

    The Ghastling’s Home Radius

The Ghastling roams within a 32-block radius of its home location — the spot where it hatched from the Dried Ghast. Keep this in mind when choosing where to place the Dried Ghast for rehydration. Pick a spot where you want the Happy Ghast to live long-term. A large open area works best so it has room to float around without getting stuck.

Step 4 — Craft the Harness

Once your Ghastling becomes a full-grown Happy Ghast, you need to craft a Harness before you can ride it. A Harness is the item introduced in Chase the Skies specifically for this purpose. A regular Saddle does not work on a Happy Ghast.

    Harness Crafting Recipe

Place the following in a 3×3 Crafting Table:

    • Top row: 3 Leather (left, center, right)
    • Middle row: 1 Glass Block (left), 1 Wool Block (center), 1 Glass Block (right)
    • Bottom row: empty

This produces 1 Harness. The color of the Wool Block you use determines the color of the Harness. There are 16 color variants — one for each dye color. If you want to change the color after crafting, you can combine the Harness with any dye in a Crafting Table to recolor it.

Leather is dropped by Cows, Horses, Donkeys, Mules, Llamas, and Rabbits. Glass Blocks are made by smelting Sand in a Furnace. Wool is sheared or dropped from Sheep. All three are easy early to mid-game materials. Check our how to make a Shield guide if you need tips on getting Leather and Crafting Table basics.

    How to Remove the Harness

To take the Harness off a Happy Ghast without harming it, use Shears on the Happy Ghast. The Harness drops as an item and the Happy Ghast is unharnessed. You can re-equip the Harness anytime.

Step 5 — Equip the Harness and Ride

Now you have a fully grown Happy Ghast and a Harness in your inventory. Here is how to equip it and start flying.

Attracting the Happy Ghast to You

The Happy Ghast will fly toward you if you are holding a Snowball or a Harness in your hand. Use this to lure it close before equipping. Switch to the Harness in your hotbar and approach — the Happy Ghast will float down toward you.

    Equipping the Harness

Hold the Harness and right-click (or use the action button on your platform) on the Happy Ghast. The Harness attaches to its head and a pair of aviator goggles appear on its face. The Happy Ghast now looks both adorable and ready to fly.

    Mounting the Happy Ghast

After equipping the Harness, right-click again on the Happy Ghast to mount it. The goggles flip down over its eyes when a player mounts it. You are now in the pilot seat.

    Platform-specific mount controls:

    • Java Edition (PC): Right-click to mount
    • Bedrock / PE: Tap and hold to mount
    • Xbox: Press and hold RT
    • PlayStation: Press and hold R2
    • Nintendo Switch: Press and hold ZR

    To Dismount

Press Shift (Sneak) to dismount on Java Edition. On console use the appropriate sneak button. When you dismount, the Happy Ghast’s home location updates to wherever it currently is.

Riding a Happy Ghast in Minecraft
Four players can ride a Happy Ghast simultaneously — the pilot sits just above its face.

How to Fly the Happy Ghast

Flying a Happy Ghast is intuitive once you are mounted. Here are all the controls:

    Flight Controls

    • W (Forward): Move in the direction you are looking
    • Look up/down: Steer the Happy Ghast vertically — look up to fly up, look down to descend while moving forward
    • Space (Jump): Move straight upward regardless of where you are looking
    • S (Back): Slow down or reverse
    • A / D: Strafe left and right
    • Shift: Dismount

The Happy Ghast moves both horizontally and vertically, allowing precise movement in three dimensions. It is not as fast as an Elytra — it is designed as a cooperative, survival-mode alternative to creative flight rather than a speed tool. Its strength is carrying multiple players and cargo, not racing across the map. If you want speed for solo travel, our Elytra guide covers the fastest way to get wings.

    Multiplayer Riding

Up to 4 players can ride a Happy Ghast simultaneously. The first player to mount controls the direction and sits at the front just above the face. Each additional player who mounts after sits on the remaining sides, filling clockwise from the first rider. When a player dismounts, the remaining riders rotate counter-clockwise to fill the gap.

Passengers who are not the pilot can still use items, build blocks, or fight mobs freely while riding. This makes the Happy Ghast incredibly powerful for group exploration, multiplayer building projects, and combat at height. If you want to set up multiplayer adventures, our Minecraft Realms setup guide can help you get a server running.

Standing on Top of the Happy Ghast

The top of the Happy Ghast is a solid platform. If you dismount mid-air and stand on its head, the Happy Ghast completely stops moving and hovers in place. It will stay perfectly still for as long as at least one player stands on it. Walking on it makes no footstep sounds at all despite being a solid surface.

This makes the Happy Ghast an incredible elevated building platform. Fly it to height, dismount, stand on top, and build freely in all directions while it holds perfectly still beneath you. This is one of its most powerful practical uses for builders. For high-altitude build inspiration, check our floating island base guide.

Dismount and stand on the Happy Ghast mid-air — it holds perfectly still as a floating build platform.

    The Happy Ghast Home System

The Happy Ghast is bound to a home location and will roam within a certain radius of it rather than wandering infinitely. Understanding this system helps you manage your Happy Ghast effectively.

    Home Radius Sizes

    • Unharnessed Happy Ghast: Roams within a 64-block radius of home
    • Harnessed Happy Ghast: Roams within a 32-block radius of home
    • Leashed Happy Ghast: Roams within a 10-block roaming distance
    • Ghastling: Roams within a 32-block radius of home

    When the Home Location Updates

The home location is not fixed permanently. It updates to the Happy Ghast’s current position whenever:

    • A Harness is equipped on or removed from it
    • A Lead is detached from it
    • A player dismounts from it
    • It is no longer being tempted by a player holding a Snowball or Harness (e.g. the player switches item or leaves tempting range)

This means that every time you ride somewhere and dismount, the home resets to that new location. You can use this to gradually move the Happy Ghast’s home base across your world by flying it in stages and dismounting at each new location.

Keeping Your Happy Ghast in Place

Since the Happy Ghast can drift to the edge of its 64-block radius when unharnessed, you may lose track of it. The two best solutions are:

    • Keep a Snowball in your off-hand — the Happy Ghast will stay close and follow you as long as you are holding one.
    • Attach it to a fence post with a Lead when you are not using it — the lead on a Happy Ghast stretches up to 16 blocks (compared to the standard 12-block limit for other mobs), giving it more room to float while staying anchored.

How to Transport Mobs and Items with the Happy Ghast

The Happy Ghast is not just a flying mount — it is also a flying cargo carrier. Using Leads you can attach boats, Chest Boats, and large mobs underneath it and fly them anywhere in the world.

How to Attach a Lead to the Happy Ghast

To attach a leashed mob or boat to a Happy Ghast, sneak (hold Shift) while holding the entity’s lead, then press the Use key on the Happy Ghast. The entity attaches underneath and will be carried wherever the Happy Ghast flies. You can attach multiple entities this way.

To remove a lead, use Shears on the Happy Ghast or on the attached entity. Using Shears on the Happy Ghast while it is carrying multiple entities cuts all leads at once.

    What You Can Transport

    • Boats and Chest Boats — great for moving items or mobs that fit in boats such as Villagers
    • Horses, Donkeys, Mules, Camels, Sniffers — large mobs that cannot fit in boats can be leashed directly to the Happy Ghast using a special quad connection. The Happy Ghast shows a custom layer when quad-leashing something, and the lead renders without slack.
    • Skeleton Horses, Zombie Horses — can also be directly leashed and flown

Note that you cannot ride inside a leashed boat while the Happy Ghast is airborne — the game prevents this to avoid fall damage when the lead snaps. If you need to move Villagers around for a trading hall, our guide to breeding Villagers explains how to manage them efficiently.

Happy Ghast transporting mobs with leads in Minecraft
Use Leads to attach boats or large mobs to the Happy Ghast — perfect for moving horses, camels, and cargo across terrain.

    Happy Ghast Health and Healing

The Happy Ghast regenerates health passively over time, but not quickly. In normal conditions it regains 1 HP every 30 seconds. This speeds up significantly in certain conditions:

    • During rain or snow — regenerates 1 HP per second
    • At cloud height (between Y-levels 187 and 196 in the Overworld) — also regenerates 1 HP per second

There is no food item you can feed an adult Happy Ghast to directly restore its health. If yours gets damaged, fly it into rain or take it up to cloud height and let it recover naturally.

When a Happy Ghast dies, it drops any Harness it was wearing plus 1 to 3 XP Orbs if killed by a player or a tamed wolf. Ghastlings drop nothing when killed. The Happy Ghast does not despawn, so as long as you keep it safe it will stay with you indefinitely.

Key Things to Know About the Happy Ghast

    It Is Not Fireproof

This is the most important safety fact. Regular Ghasts in the Nether are immune to fire and lava. The Happy Ghast is not. Lava will kill it. Fire damages it. If you take your Happy Ghast into the Nether, fly high above the lava and stay far away from any fire sources. One mistake near a lava lake can cost you the Happy Ghast you spent 40 minutes raising.

    It Cannot Be Bred

Unlike most passive mobs in Minecraft, Happy Ghasts cannot be bred. Snowballs speed up Ghastling growth but do not trigger breeding between two adult Happy Ghasts. Every Happy Ghast you want requires its own separate Dried Ghast block from the Nether. Plan accordingly if you want multiple flying mounts.

It Works in All Three Dimensions

The Happy Ghast can fly freely in the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. This makes it useful for navigating the outer End islands when hunting for End Cities or Elytra. Just be extremely careful in the Nether given its lack of fire immunity. Pair it with a Lodestone Compass to always find your way back while exploring on Ghast-back.

The Harness Has 16 Color Variants

The color of the Wool block used in crafting determines the Harness color. All 16 standard dye colors work. If you want to change it after crafting, simply combine the Harness with a dye in the Crafting Table to recolor it. This lets you color-code multiple Happy Ghasts if you have more than one, making it easy to tell them apart from the ground.

    It Does Not Despawn

Unlike many mobs, the Happy Ghast does not despawn. Once you have raised one, it is permanently part of your world. Use a Lead on a fence post to keep it anchored when you are not flying, and it will be there waiting for you whenever you return.

Spawn Eggs in Creative Mode (Bedrock)

In Bedrock Edition, Happy Ghast spawn eggs have a 5% chance to spawn a Ghastling instead of an adult when used on an existing Happy Ghast or Ghastling. In Java Edition, Ghastlings do not have their own spawn egg — you can only spawn one by right-clicking an adult Happy Ghast or Ghastling with the Happy Ghast egg.

    Final Thoughts

The Happy Ghast is one of the most exciting mobs Mojang has ever added to Minecraft. It takes a creature that has been a source of frustration and terror for 15 years and turns it into something players actually want to find and care for. The process of raising one — from finding a sad grey block in the Nether to watching it grow into a smiling flying mount that you and three friends can ride across the sky — is genuinely rewarding.

It is not the fastest way to travel. Elytra and rockets are still quicker for solo flight. But for multiplayer exploration, high-altitude building, and transporting mobs and cargo across terrain, nothing else in survival mode comes close to what the Happy Ghast offers. Everything about it — the Dried Ghast, the Harness, the flying mechanics — has remained exactly the same through all 2026 Minecraft updates, from the Tiny Takeover (26.1) baby mob overhaul through Chaos Cubed (26.2) sulfur caves. What you learn here applies to every Minecraft version from 1.21.6 onward.

Get your Nether Portal built, gather your resources, and go find that Dried Ghast. In about 40 minutes you could be soaring above your base with a grinning white monster carrying you and your friends through the clouds. That is worth every minute of the wait.
