How to Unlock Toph in Avatar Legends

Toph does not need to be unlocked. She is part of the base roster in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game and is available from the very first time you open the game. Only Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra are locked at the start.

If you landed here looking for how to get Toph – she is already on the character select screen. The real work is learning how to use her. This guide covers everything: her playstyle, her armor system, her key moves, her Critical Hit conditions, and which support to pick depending on how you want to play.

For the full picture of who is locked and who is not, see our complete character unlock guide for Avatar Legends.

Who Is Toph in Avatar Legends?

Toph Beifong is the blind earthbending master from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She taught herself to bend by sensing vibrations through the ground and became a champion in underground earthbending tournaments before joining Team Avatar as Aang’s earthbending teacher. Her stubborn, headstrong personality is fully captured in how she plays in Avatar Legends.

Toph is a mighty glacier – slow movement but enormous power. She uses earth pillars, stone walls, and crushing armored attacks to control the stage and force opponents into bad positions. She does not rush opponents down. Instead, she makes opponents come to her, punishes their mistakes, and hits them so hard that a single conversion into her combo routes can take a round by itself.

She is one of the most unique characters in the game. Her heavy attacks deal chip damage even when blocked. Her grab can be charged into an unblockable command grab. Many of her moves have built-in armor that lets her tank an incoming hit and keep attacking. She rewards patience, good reads, and positional awareness over speed or execution.

Toph’s Core Systems – Armor, Crushing, and Taunt

    Armor

Armor is Toph’s defining system. Many of her moves have armor that absorbs one incoming attack without interrupting her. Some moves go even further into Hyper Armor, which absorbs any number of hits without stopping her. Both versions of armor are broken by Super Techniques, so opponents need resources to blow through it.

This makes Toph extremely threatening in close range. When opponents try to interrupt her attacks, many of her moves simply tank the hit and continue. This forces opponents to either jump, throw, or use Supers to stop her – all of which Toph has answers for.

    Crushing

Toph’s heavy attacks cause chip damage even when the opponent blocks them. In most fighting games, blocking neutralizes chip damage entirely. With Toph, every blocked heavy attack still costs the opponent health. This makes her pressure genuinely dangerous even when opponents are playing defensively and rewards throwing out heavy attacks in neutral.

    Taunt

Holding Toph’s Flow Stance triggers a taunt. If the opponent lets her finish the full taunt speech, it activates as a Critical Hit that removes 2 Energy points from the opponent. This is a high-risk option – the opponent can attack to interrupt it – but landing it swings the resource war significantly in Toph’s favor.

    Toph’s Key Moves

    Rooted Stance

Toph enters a low earthbending stance that has armor on startup. With The Boulder support, you can hold the Flow button during Rooted Stance to extend it into Hyper Armor at the cost of Chi. While Hyper Armored, Crushing Stomp and Crushing Tackle both gain additional armor on top of the Hyper Armor. This is Toph’s main defensive tool and also the setup for one of her Critical Hit conditions.

    Crushing Stomp

Toph stomps forward and launches the floor upward in a large area in front of her. If performed while Rooted Stance has Hyper Armor active, the move gains armor. It is one of Toph’s key pressure tools and also part of the Armored Advance Critical Hit condition – armor through an attack with Rooted Stance, then hit with Crushing Stomp to earn a Chakra stock.

    Badgermole’s Sight

Toph’s main stance move. From Badgermole’s Sight, she can access several follow-up attacks including Badgermole’s Trick and Badgermole’s Claw. The EX version creates a Champ’s Ring – a stone wall that blocks the opponent’s movement. The wall stays up until the opponent destroys it, throws Toph, or time runs out. Knocking the opponent into the wall with tackling attacks or throws causes a wall bounce for extra damage.

With The Badgermole support, Badgermole’s Trick and Badgermole’s Claw are enlarged, and Toph can cancel their recovery back into the EX version of Badgermole’s Sight by holding the Flow button. This creates sustained earthbending pressure that is very hard to escape.

    High Ground

Toph rises on a stone platform, gaining height and threatening with aerial attacks from above. With The Hippo support, High Ground starts rising faster, gains armor on startup and while rising, and Toph recovers more quickly after leaving the platform. She can also move the platform by holding a direction while holding the Flow button, making it an active positional tool rather than a static move.

    Command Grab (Charged Grab)

Toph’s regular grab can be charged to turn it into an unblockable command grab that cannot be teched. This is one of her strongest tools against opponents who try to block everything. With The Boulder support, the command grab enables midscreen combos and resourceless corner combos on connect, massively increasing her conversion damage.

    Earth Pillar Attacks

Toph can bend pillars of earth upward from the ground to strike opponents, propel herself across the stage, or block off the opponent’s movement. These pillar attacks give her ways to close distance despite her slow movement speed. Opponents knocked into the wall created by Badgermole’s Sight (EX) bounce back for additional damage.

    Toph’s Critical Hit Conditions

    • Stalker: Hit the opponent with Badgermole’s Trick while they are walking, dashing, or using Flow movement. Rewards reading and punishing the opponent’s movement patterns.
    • Earth Spike: Outside of a combo, hit an airborne opponent with Badgermole’s Claw. Rewards anti-air reads with bonus resources.
    • Armored Advance: Armor through an attack with Rooted Stance and then hit the opponent with Crushing Stomp. One of Toph’s most impactful Critical Hits – landing it means you absorbed a hit and hit back, earning a Chakra stock.
    • Taunt Hit: Complete the full taunt by holding Flow Stance until the taunt speech finishes. Removes 2 Energy points from the opponent. High risk but a big swing in the resource war.

    Best Support Characters for Toph

Toph’s three supports each push a different part of her kit. The right choice depends on how you want to play her.

    Badgermole – Better Earth Pillars

Badgermole powers up Toph’s Badgermole’s Sight stance, enlarging Badgermole’s Trick and Badgermole’s Claw. It also lets her cancel the recovery of those moves back into the EX version of Badgermole’s Sight by holding the Flow button. This creates looping earthbending pressure from stance that is very difficult to escape. Badgermole also gives Toph a new leap follow-up from the stance by inputting a direction during it. Best for players who want to maximize stance pressure and trap opponents in corner setups.

The Boulder – Armored Flow Movement

The Boulder makes all of Toph’s Flow Moves armored, absorbing one hit during any Flow movement. Her Bandit’s Elbow throw is also improved. During Rooted Stance, The Boulder lets Toph hold the Flow button to activate Hyper Armor, and Crushing Stomp and Crushing Tackle both gain additional armor in that state. The command grab is also improved, enabling midscreen combos on connect. Best for players who want maximum armor coverage and the strongest command grab conversion routes.

The Hippo – Better Platform Ride

The Hippo enhances Toph’s High Ground platform move, making it faster to start, armored on startup and while rising, and quicker to recover from. Toph can also move the platform by holding a direction with the Flow button, turning it into an active stage control tool. This support reduces the pushback from High Ground on block, making certain pressure sequences gapless and enabling new combo routes even in midscreen. Best for players who want to use High Ground aggressively and create pressure from above.

Is Toph Good in Avatar Legends?

Toph is rated S-tier at launch and is highlighted as one of the game’s early standout characters. Multiple tier lists and early community reports call her out specifically as a top-level threat.

Her combination of chip damage on blocked heavies, unblockable command grab, armored moves, and Champ’s Ring wall traps makes her incredibly difficult to deal with once she gets momentum. She can pin opponents in the corner and deal devastating damage from there. The community consensus is that she has very few weaknesses in her kit at launch.

Her main limitation is movement speed. She is one of the slowest characters in the game and can struggle to close distance against mobile zoners who keep her out. But once she is in, she is one of the most oppressive characters on the roster.

Players who enjoy deliberate, high-impact characters who dominate through positioning and punishment will feel right at home with Toph.

Tips to Get Better With Toph

    • Use armored moves to close distance. Toph’s main challenge is getting in. Her armored attacks let her walk through pokes and projectiles that would stop other characters. Learn which of her moves have armor and use them to approach safely.
    • Mix your command grab in with blocked heavies. Opponents who are scared of your chip damage will start blocking more. That is when you charge the command grab. They cannot block it and they cannot tech it.
    • Use Badgermole’s Sight EX to cut off the stage. The Champ’s Ring wall traps the opponent and changes the geometry of the fight. Use it to force opponents into corners where your close-range pressure is most dangerous.
    • Do not rush the taunt. The full taunt is a Critical Hit but it takes time to complete. Only go for it when you have genuine space and the opponent is respecting your pressure. Against aggressive players, save it for after a knockdown.
    • Rooted Stance into Crushing Stomp is your bread and butter Critical Hit. Practice absorbing one attack in Rooted Stance and immediately landing Crushing Stomp. This Chakra stock conversion is one of Toph’s most reliable reward routes in neutral.

Once you have Toph’s fundamentals down, keep investing in her supports and leveling her up. See our guide on how to level up characters in Avatar Legends for the fastest approach.

How Toph Compares to Other Characters

Toph plays completely differently to the other starters. Korra rushes you down and overwhelms you with speed and combos. Katara keeps you out with ice and water whips. Zuko controls mid-range with fireballs and builds power over time. Toph does none of that. She plants herself, survives incoming pressure with armor, and punishes every mistake with earth-shattering damage.

She is the best choice if you like slow but dominant characters who win through positioning and punishment rather than speed or execution complexity. She is S-tier for a reason – her kit has very few holes at launch.
