HoYoverse’s Nodusfall Ditches Character Gacha — Here’s How the New Game Will Actually Work

If you’ve ever been burned by a gacha 50/50 at the worst possible time, HoYoverse’s latest announcement might be the one you’ve been waiting to hear. The developer behind Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero revealed a brand-new game at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, and it’s doing things very differently. The game is called Nodusfall, and the studio has confirmed that characters will not be obtained through random draws — no gacha pulls, no pity system, no 50/50.

For a studio that has built some of the most profitable gacha games in the world, that’s a genuinely significant statement.

    What Is Nodusfall?

Nodusfall is a dark fantasy cooperative action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5. Visually, it’s a complete departure from everything HoYoverse has released before — the vibrant anime aesthetic that defines Genshin Impact and its siblings is gone, replaced with hyper-realistic dark fantasy visuals that draw immediate comparisons to Elden Ring. Grotesque creatures, grim environments, heavy armour, detailed gore — it looks less like a HoYoverse game and more like a FromSoftware title at first glance.

The setting is a world where both divine authority and order have collapsed. Players take on the role of Weavers — warriors tasked with forming bonds with companions and hunting the corrupted mythological creatures that have overrun the world in the absence of divine structure. The game draws from multiple real-world mythological traditions for its creatures: massive Western dragons, ancient Eastern folklore beasts, and everything in between.

At its core, Nodusfall is a four-player co-op experience. Squads of up to four form together to take down enormous monsters and bosses, with the game demanding genuine teamwork rather than just parallel play. Characters occupy distinct roles and bring different abilities to a fight, and defeating powerful creatures rewards resources used to unlock new skills and weapons. The combat system lets players choose from different Styles and Skill combinations, creating build variety within the co-op framework. One character in the trailer was shown unleashing lightning-infused attacks, while another had revival abilities for rescuing fallen teammates — a clear signal that party composition and role synergy are going to matter here.

The creature design alone is worth calling out. The trailer showed bosses at genuinely colossal scale — the kind of size that makes the Monster Hunter comparison feel accurate, even if the dark aesthetic pushes it toward something grimmer than Capcom’s franchise. HoYoverse’s official description confirms that different world regions will each have their own distinct history, culture, and ecosystem, and that new regions unlock progressively over the course of the game — suggesting a long-form content drip-feed structure similar to live service RPGs, but built around exploration rather than event banners.

The No-Gacha Confirmation — What Exactly Was Said

After the trailer dropped, the first question on everyone’s mind was obvious: does it have gacha? HoYoverse answered that directly in a statement to PC Gamer following the Gamescom presentation:

“Nodusfall will be a free-to-play, long-term game. What we can share at this time is that characters are not obtained through random draws. We hope to allow players to unlock this core gameplay experience through continued play. Cosmetic monetization is an important avenue we will be considering.”

That’s about as direct as it gets. No random draws for characters. Unlock them by playing. That’s the commitment. The monetization that does exist will target cosmetics — outfits, hairstyles, accessories — rather than the characters themselves or their combat capabilities. PC Gamer’s hands-on preview noted that the four playable characters in the demo could each be customised with different outfits, hairstyles, and accessories, giving a clear sense of what that cosmetic layer might look like in practice.

What HoYoverse hasn’t specified yet is how cosmetics will be sold. There’s a meaningful difference between a straightforward cash shop where you buy what you want and a gacha system where you’re gambling for what you want — and both would technically qualify as “cosmetic monetization.” The studio is being deliberately vague on the specifics, which is why community reaction has landed in cautious optimism territory rather than outright celebration.

Why This Is a Big Deal for HoYoverse

To understand why this matters, you need to understand how central gacha is to HoYoverse’s existing business. Genshin Impact has been one of the highest-grossing mobile games in the world for years, consistently earning hundreds of millions of dollars per month in its peak periods. Honkai: Star Rail replicated that success in the turn-based RPG space. Zenless Zone Zero extended it again into action combat. All three games use character gacha as their primary monetisation driver — the draw of collecting characters, the frustration of the 50/50, the relief of hitting pity, the anticipation of each new banner. It’s a formula that works financially in a way that’s very difficult to argue with from a pure numbers standpoint.

Nodusfall abandoning that formula for character acquisition isn’t a small tweak. It’s a fundamental reconsideration of how the game creates and retains its player base. Rather than the collection-based progression loop — where the ongoing motivation is “I want this character, I need to save or spend for this banner” — Nodusfall is building its loop around actual gameplay. Hunt creatures. Earn resources. Unlock skills and weapons. Level up your Weaver.

For players who have bounced off Genshin Impact specifically because the character gacha felt like a paywall, this repositioning is the whole pitch. You can get access to everything the gameplay has to offer by just playing the game, without spending money or hoping your luck holds on a 50/50.

Community Reaction — Optimistic But Watchful

Responses across gaming communities have been largely positive, with some important caveats attached. The broad sentiment breaks down into a few camps:

    • The enthusiastic camp — Players who dislike character gacha on principle, either because of the financial pressure or because they find the gameplay-as-paywall aspect genuinely frustrating. For these players, the confirmation is exactly what they wanted to hear. A co-op monster-hunting RPG with Elden Ring aesthetics from a studio with HoYoverse’s production budget, free to play, with characters unlocked through gameplay? That’s a very attractive package.
    • The pragmatic camp — Players who are fine with monetisation existing but want it limited to things that don’t affect gameplay. These players are broadly okay with the cosmetic monetisation avenue, especially if it means the game avoids combat-relevant gacha entirely. The concern here is that the details haven’t been specified — “cosmetic monetization” is a wide description that could mean many things.
    • The sceptical camp — Players who’ve seen free-to-play games promise cosmetic-only monetisation and then gradually introduce power creep, battle passes with gameplay-relevant rewards, or other systems that blur the line. The vagueness of HoYoverse’s statement leaves room for these concerns, and given that the studio’s entire existing portfolio is built on character gacha, the proof will need to be in the actual game.

None of these reactions are unreasonable. HoYoverse has earned enough goodwill with its production quality and enough scepticism from its monetisation history to justify all three responses simultaneously.

How Nodusfall Fits Into HoYoverse’s Wider Slate

Nodusfall isn’t the only new game HoYoverse has in development. The studio is actively supporting Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero while also working on several upcoming titles:

    • Honkai: Nexus Anima — Described as having Pokémon-like elements with an autobattler combat system. Has already held multiple beta tests, suggesting it’s the closest to release of the new batch.
    • Petit Planet — Also lacking a release date but with beta tests completed, putting it potentially ahead of Nodusfall in the launch queue.
    • Varsapura — An open-world game announced in late 2025 that opened beta test recruitment in July 2026. Still early in the process.
    • Nodusfall — No release date, no release window, and currently only confirmed for PC.

The monetisation approaches for Nexus Anima, Petit Planet, and Varsapura haven’t been fully detailed yet, so it’s possible some of those games will stick closer to HoYoverse’s traditional gacha model. Nodusfall appears to be a deliberate experiment in a different direction — perhaps targeting a player base that the studio’s existing games haven’t been able to reach, specifically the audience that’s interested in co-op action RPGs but put off by gacha economics.

Platforms and Release — What We Know

Currently, PC is the only confirmed platform for Nodusfall. Given the Unreal Engine 5 visuals and the scale of the boss encounters shown in the trailer, a console release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S seems likely eventually, but nothing has been announced. Mobile seems unlikely given the graphical demands of what’s been shown — this doesn’t look like a game that runs on a phone.

No release date or even a release window has been set. HoYoverse hasn’t announced any beta testing plans for Nodusfall yet, unlike Nexus Anima and Petit Planet which have already run multiple betas. That puts Nodusfall likely at the back of the queue among HoYoverse’s unannounced new titles in terms of how close it is to being playable.

It’s still early days, and the studio is clearly still figuring out the monetisation specifics. But as a vision statement from one of the biggest studios in the live service space, Nodusfall’s no-character-gacha commitment is already doing exactly what it was designed to do — getting people talking, and getting people who had written off HoYoverse games to at least look twice.

There’s been a lot happening at and around Gamescom 2026 this week. If you want more gaming news to dig into, the first confirmed returning character in GTA 6 was just spotted in the Extended Look, and Rockstar confirmed GTA 6’s map is twice the size of GTA 5 with an 80-hour story. On a completely different note, the RPM Red Ranger Scott Truman just joined Power Rangers: Legacy Wars today — a nice win for fans of one of the best seasons the franchise has ever had.
