    Key Takeaways

    • Former Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan says he has not played or followed Overwatch for five years since leaving Blizzard in April 2021.
    • Kaplan calls the separation “clinical” — he avoids all social media posts, news, and even searches of his own name tied to the game.
    • The decision was made entirely for his mental health following a deeply difficult exit from Blizzard.
    • A previously revealed reason for his departure: a Blizzard CFO threatened to blame 1,000 potential layoffs on Kaplan personally if Overwatch missed financial targets.
    • Since leaving, Kaplan founded indie studio Kintsugiyama, currently developing open-world survival game The Legend of California.
    • Overwatch meanwhile is now in Season 5, with new Hero Doctrine added and Sombra and Roadhog both reworked at launch.

Jeff Kaplan Is Done With Overwatch — And He Means It

If you were hoping Jeff Kaplan had secretly been lurking in Overwatch matches or quietly keeping up with patch notes, don’t hold your breath. The man who helped build one of the biggest team shooters of the last decade has made it crystal clear: he hasn’t touched Overwatch in five years, and he has absolutely no plans to change that.

In an October 14 interview with GameSpot, Kaplan opened up about his complete separation from the franchise he spent years building. He described it as a “clinical separation” — not casual disinterest, not just being busy with other things, but a deliberate and total cutoff done specifically to protect his mental health. He said he refuses to read social media posts about the game, ignores any Blizzard news tied to Overwatch, and won’t even search his own name in connection with the series.

That’s a pretty heavy level of distance from something you spent the better part of a decade pouring yourself into. But when you understand what went down at Blizzard before Kaplan walked out the door in April 2021, it starts making a lot more sense.

The Real Reason Kaplan Left Blizzard

Back in March 2026, Kaplan revealed something that recontextualized his entire exit from the company. During 2020 — while Overwatch was still under his leadership — a Blizzard CFO directly told him that if the game fell short of its financial targets, the resulting 1,000 potential layoffs would be blamed on him personally.

Let that sink in for a second. The person who built Overwatch from the ground up, who had come over from World of Warcraft where he’d been game director during the era-defining Wrath of the Lich King expansion, was being told that a four-figure wave of job losses would land on his shoulders if the numbers didn’t hit. That’s an extraordinary amount of pressure to put on any individual, and Kaplan has said the damage from that conversation stuck with him long after the CFO involved eventually left the company.

He didn’t rage-quit or burn bridges publicly. He held on through the development of Overwatch 2’s groundwork and left quietly in April 2021, with Echo — released in April 2020 — being the last hero shipped under his watch. By then, though, the writing was clearly already on the wall for him internally.

Kaplan Is Still Proud — He Just Knows When to Step Back

One thing Kaplan has been consistent about is that none of this comes from bitterness toward Overwatch itself as a game or toward the people currently working on it. In the GameSpot interview, he was clear that he remains proud of what he and his teams built during those years. He just genuinely believes that the current version of Overwatch belongs to the developers running it now and to the players who show up every day to queue in.

It’s a surprisingly mature perspective, honestly. A lot of former creative leads can’t fully let go of the thing they built — they stay in the comments, they quote-tweet updates, they get pulled into debates about whether the new direction honors their vision. Kaplan seems to have actively chosen not to do any of that, and he’s framing it not as a grudge but as something necessary for his own wellbeing.

There’s something worth respecting in a guy who built a game played by millions, walked away under genuinely painful circumstances, and managed to create enough distance to move forward without dragging the past into everything he does next.

    What Kaplan Is Building Now

Since leaving Blizzard, Kaplan founded an independent studio called Kintsugiyama — named after the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, which feels very on-brand for someone rebuilding after a rough chapter. The studio’s debut title is The Legend of California, an open-world action survival game set in the 19th century during California’s Gold Rush era.

The project has been in active development with select playtests running through 2026. A multiplayer alpha test ran in March 2026, and a fifth alpha is scheduled to run from November 12 to 18. For a guy who’s been building games for over two decades, going indie is a significant shift — but it also means creative control and no CFOs threatening mass layoffs over performance targets.

It’ll be interesting to see where The Legend of California lands when it eventually reaches a wider audience. The survival genre is competitive, but Kaplan’s pedigree in designing games built around teamwork and emergent player interaction could translate well into that space.

    Where Overwatch Stands Without Him

While Kaplan has stepped away entirely, Overwatch itself has kept moving. The game is now in Season 5, with new hero Doctrine joining the roster — someone Kaplan openly admitted he’s not familiar with, which really underscores just how complete the separation is. Blizzard also rolled out full reworks for both Sombra and Roadhog at the season’s launch, continuing the team’s ongoing effort to refresh heroes that had become problematic in the meta over time.

The Reign of Talon story arc is wrapping up as well, which signals a significant narrative shift for the game heading into 2027. Whatever Blizzard has planned next, it’s being built entirely by the current creative team — the one Kaplan himself said now rightfully owns the game’s future.

If you’re a fan of live service games going through big identity shifts and what that means for communities, the RuneScape Reignited cancellation saga is another example of what happens when a franchise’s direction and its playerbase fall out of alignment. As for Kaplan — wherever The Legend of California ends up, it’s hard not to root for the guy. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is close the door on something that cost you more than it should have, and build something new. That’s exactly what he’s doing.

Overwatch Season 5 is live now. The Legend of California’s fifth alpha runs November 12–18 for invited players, with broader release details still to come from Kintsugiyama.
