    Key Takeaways

    • A Save Mass Effect petition on Change.org has surpassed 187,000 signatures following BioWare’s closure.
    • BioWare officially shut down on October 21, 2026, after more than 30 years as a studio.
    • The closure came just two months after EA’s $55 billion leveraged buyout led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
    • The next Mass Effect game — known internally as Mass Effect Universe — was cancelled alongside the studio shutdown.
    • The petition calls on EA to either continue Mass Effect development or license the IP to another passionate studio.
    • A content creator who claimed to be on the official Mass Effect Council shared alleged details about the cancelled game.

This one stings. If you grew up choosing between Paragon and Renegade, grinding through the Citadel, or spending hours making sure your entire crew survived the Suicide Mission — you already know how painful this week has been. BioWare is gone. The next Mass Effect game is dead. And now, nearly 190,000 fans are raising their voice demanding something be done about it.

A petition started by a fan named Joe Smith on Change.org under the hashtag #SaveMassEffect has crossed 187,000 signatures in the wake of BioWare’s closure — and it’s still climbing. The mood across the community right now is somewhere between grief and outrage, and honestly, that’s completely understandable.

    What Happened to BioWare?

On October 21, 2026, Electronic Arts confirmed the unthinkable: after more than 30 years of making some of the most beloved RPGs ever created, BioWare is shutting down. The Edmonton studio — responsible for Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and more — is done.

The announcement came as part of a broader restructuring at EA that wiped out around 400 jobs across the company, roughly 3% of its total workforce. About 50 of those cuts were specifically BioWare employees tied directly to the studio’s closure. Other EA-owned studios hit by layoffs include Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, and EA Motive.

The timing is hard to ignore. The closure landed just two months after EA completed its massive $55 billion leveraged buyout led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), alongside investment firms Silver Lake and Affinity Partners — the latter founded by Jared Kushner. The deal took EA private and saddled the company with roughly $18 billion in new debt. Industry experts had warned for months that serious cuts were coming as a result of that financial strain, but even the most pessimistic predictions didn’t necessarily account for BioWare being among the first casualties.

In EA’s internal letter to staff, co-signed by CEO David Tinson and CSO Cam Weber, the company acknowledged BioWare’s legacy but framed the closure as a necessary business decision — focusing resources on what it called “larger opportunities.” BioWare’s own statement on X confirmed it plainly: “After more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”

    What Was Mass Effect Universe?

The cancelled next Mass Effect — which reportedly went by the internal title Mass Effect Universe — had been in early development for some time. It was first teased at The Game Awards back in December 2020, nearly six years ago, and BioWare had been quietly working on it with a skeleton crew even as the studio shrank significantly in the years since Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Earlier this week, an internal trailer for Mass Effect Universe leaked online. BioWare later confirmed that the trailer was real — a bittersweet moment since by then, the game it was building hype for was already cancelled. The leak gave fans a brief glimpse of what could have been before the door closed entirely.

On top of that, a YouTuber and content creator who claimed to have served on BioWare’s official “Mass Effect Council” published a lengthy post on X sharing alleged firsthand details about the game’s development. He stated he had seen the game in progress and had provided direct feedback during development. None of these details have been officially confirmed by EA, but they’ve sparked significant conversation within the community about just how far along things actually were.

What Does the Petition Actually Ask For?

The petition is careful to be realistic. Starter Joe Smith isn’t asking EA to reverse course and reopen BioWare — he knows that ship has sailed. Instead, the petition pushes for what it calls “decisive action” from EA to keep Mass Effect alive in some form.

There are two paths the petition specifically calls out. First, EA could commit to continued Mass Effect development with proper funding, adequate staffing, and the time and resources needed to maintain the franchise’s reputation. Second — and perhaps more realistically at this point — EA could license the Mass Effect IP to another studio that has both the passion and the vision to carry it forward.

The petition describes Mass Effect as a franchise that has gone far beyond typical gaming experiences, building a global community around themes of choice, individuality, and shared storytelling. It warns that abandoning the franchise entirely would be a blow not just to fans, but to narrative-driven games as a genre.

As of now, EA has made no public statement about the long-term fate of the Mass Effect or Dragon Age intellectual properties. Whether they’ll be shelved indefinitely, sold, licensed, or eventually handed to another internal team remains completely unclear.

Is There Any Hope Left for Mass Effect?

It’s not entirely lights out. There are a couple of threads worth watching. EA had reportedly been developing a Mass Effect TV series with Amazon Prime Video before the closure — and there’s been no confirmation that project has been cancelled alongside the game. If that adaptation is still moving forward, it suggests EA hasn’t completely walked away from the IP.

There’s also the historical precedent of beloved franchises being picked up after a studio closure. It doesn’t always happen quickly, and it doesn’t always happen the way fans want, but the Mass Effect IP is unquestionably valuable. The petition itself making waves at 187,000 signatures demonstrates that the audience is still there, still passionate, and absolutely willing to support the right product.

For now though, it really does feel like the end of an era. BioWare gave us Commander Shepard. It gave us Garrus, Tali, Liara, Mordin, Legion, and dozens of characters that fans have carried with them for over a decade. The least we can do is make some noise.

If you want to add your name, the petition is live at Change.org. And while you’re processing the grief, there’s plenty more gaming news to keep you going:
