Tricks have become a fan-favorite feature in the Mario Kart series, and they originally made their debut in Mario Kart Wii. Since then, they’ve been a core part of the gameplay.
In Mario Kart World, Tricks still function in a familiar way—triggered right after you launch off a ramp or catch some air—but with a few cool upgrades that make them even more useful.
To pull off a Trick, just hit the drift button (R) while you’re mid-air. Sounds easy, right? But here’s where it gets interesting: Mario Kart World is the first game in the series where you can chain multiple Tricks in a single jump. The more you trick, the bigger the reward.

What Do Tricks Actually Do?
If you’ve played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you’ll find the core concept pretty familiar: Tricks give you a boost when you land. But Mario Kart World takes things up a notch.
Instead of being limited to one trick per jump, you can keep doing Tricks in mid-air—as long as you’re airborne. And yep, each one stacks up more boost that kicks in as soon as your wheels touch the ground.
Whether you’re jumping off a ramp, flying off a boost pad, or even getting launched into the air by bumping into a Toad in the open world, you’re good to go.
And don’t worry—there’s no downside to hitting that Trick button multiple times. The game actually encourages it.
Master this mechanic, and you’ll be zooming past racers who haven’t caught on yet.

How to Do Tricks in Mario Kart World
Here’s the lowdown:
- Press R while you’re mid-air (just a tap, not a hold).
- Your character will do a short animation, and a ring will flash around them—that’s the Trick.
- As soon as the animation ends, you can hit R again for another Trick (as long as you’re still in the air).
Want to mix it up? Press a direction along with R to trigger different animations:
- Left or right for spins
- Up or down for flips
- No input? Your character pulls off their signature move
You can’t use Tricks during a regular low hop or a Charge Jump. You need to be airborne thanks to something in the environment—ramps, items, or even the Feather power-up.
That Feather can launch you into the sky for a solid three seconds, giving you prime Trick time to dodge hits or find secret paths.
Ready to lap the competition? Tricks in Mario Kart World aren’t just flashy—they’re a legit way to gain the edge in every race. So go ahead, start spamming that R button like a pro.
