Rifts in Minecraft Dungeons 2 2

    TL;DR

    • Rifts are portals in the Overworld that send you into the Sift dimension for an instanced encounter.
    • They are created by the Grand Illusioner’s staff and appear randomly on the map each session.
    • Rifts unlock during the early story. You do not need to finish the campaign to access them.
    • Each Rift contains either a boss fight or a procedurally generated area ending in an ambush encounter.
    • Every Rift is affected by one of three Sift Tides: Flow (normal), Thrive (faster souls), or Endure (harder enemies).
    • Completing a Rift rewards an Obsidian Chest containing Echo Shards, Enchantment Books, gear, and emeralds.
    • Rifts are the best repeatable source of Enchantment Books and Echo Shards in the game.
    • If no Rifts appear on your map, quit to the main menu and reload. New ones will spawn.
    • Never touch the colorful liquid in the Sift — it deals damage.

What Are Rifts in Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Rifts are tears in the fabric between dimensions. In the story of Minecraft Dungeons 2, they are created by the Grand Illusioner using a powerful staff, allowing the Illager High Council to move armies between the Overworld and the Sift dimension.

For players, a Rift is a portal you find on the Overworld map. Walk into one and you are instantly transported to the Sift — the game’s brand new dimension. Inside, you fight through an instanced encounter, collect rewards, and return to the Overworld when done.

Rifts appear as glowing tears in the world. They show up as icons on your map once unlocked, making them easy to spot and track between sessions.

    How to Unlock Rifts

You do not need to finish the main campaign to access Rifts. They unlock early in the story as you progress through the first few core quests. Clearing the first two Overworld quests unlocks the first Sift Rift on your map.

Once Rifts begin spawning, they appear randomly across the Overworld map at the start of each session. The game data shows up to 12 Rift marker positions placed around the Overworld, but only a handful are active at any given time. Check your map when you log in each session to see where they have appeared.

If you complete all active Rifts and want more, simply quit to the main menu and reload your game. New Rifts will spawn in fresh positions when you return.

How Rifts Work: Inside the Encounter

When you step into a Rift, you enter an instanced encounter inside the Sift dimension. Each Rift contains one of two possible encounter types:

Rifts in Minecraft Dungeons 2 Boss Encounter
Rifts in Minecraft Dungeons 2 Boss Encounter

    Type 1: Boss Encounter

You are dropped into an area leading directly to a boss fight. The boss is usually an enemy type native to the Sift or a Soul-Corrupted elite version of a familiar mob. Defeat the boss to complete the Rift and claim your rewards from the Obsidian Chest at the exit.

Type 2: Procedurally Generated Area with Ambush

You fight through a short procedurally generated area, similar in structure to a Dungeon. Chests and enemies are scattered throughout. At the end, you hit an Ambush — roughly two to three waves of enemies, followed by a boss or elite spawn. Clear all waves and defeat the final enemy to finish the Rift and open the reward chest.

Both encounter types end with the same reward: an Obsidian Chest containing Echo Shards, Enchantment Books, gear, and emeralds. The Ambush encounters can take longer to complete but tend to produce slightly more loot along the way from enemies and side chests.

    Soul-Corrupted Enemies Inside Rifts

Rifts are filled with Soul-Corrupted mobs — stronger, glowing blue versions of standard enemies. These elites hit harder, have more health, and behave more aggressively than their normal counterparts. They are the equivalent of Elite enemies in other action RPGs.

Soul-Corrupted enemies are important for two reasons. First, defeating them drops Echo Shards, the currency you need for enchanting and upgrading. Second, they are more dangerous than the standard enemies around them and need to be prioritized carefully.

When you see a Soul-Corrupted enemy in a group, do not rush it directly. Use ranged attacks or crowd control abilities to handle the weaker mobs around it first, then focus the elite down. Charging into a pack with a Soul-Corrupted enemy in the middle is the fastest way to get overwhelmed.

    The Three Sift Tides Explained

The biggest difference between Rifts and regular Dungeons is the Sift Tide system. Every Rift you enter is affected by one of three rotating tides that change how the encounter plays out. The current tide is shown in the top corner of your screen while inside the Sift.

    Flow — Normal Conditions

Flow has no special effect on gameplay. Enemies behave normally, soul generation is standard, and artifact cooldowns run at their base rate. This is the safest tide for learning a new Rift layout or for taking on a tough boss for the first time.

    Thrive — Favored Conditions

During Thrive, soul generation is faster and artifact cooldowns are reduced. If your build relies on soul-powered artifacts, enchantments like Ancient Alchemy, or frequent artifact activations, Thrive is the best possible time to push objectives, run an ambush encounter, or take on a boss. Use this tide to its full potential. Pop your artifacts more frequently than you normally would and chain ability triggers.

    Endure — Harder Conditions

Endure is the most demanding tide. More powerful monsters spawn and your passive soul regeneration is completely disabled. You can still gain souls from killing enemies, but the background trickle you rely on between fights is gone. Boss fights during Endure are especially punishing because the fight takes longer and you will spend more resources getting through it.

The smart play during Endure is to stick to clearing standard enemies for Echo Shards and skip boss encounters until the tide shifts. If you need to do a boss, focus on builds that generate souls through kills rather than passive regen, and bring a potion-based healing setup to compensate for the lack of soul sustain.

Rifts vs Dungeons: What Is the Difference?

Rifts and Dungeons are very similar in structure. Both contain procedurally generated encounters, both drop Echo Shards and Enchantment Books from Obsidian Chests, and both are available throughout the campaign and endgame. The core differences are:

    • Location: Dungeons are tied to specific Overworld regions like The Deep Dark. Rifts spawn randomly across the Overworld map and send you into the Sift dimension.
    • Sift Tides: Rifts always operate under one of the three Sift Tides. Regular Dungeons do not have tides. This means Rifts have a dynamic difficulty layer that Dungeons lack.
    • Enemy types: Rift enemies are Sift-native creatures and Soul-Corrupted mobs. Dungeons use regional enemy sets. Sift creatures are generally more aggressive and punish passive play more than Overworld enemies do.
    • Enchantment Book pools: Different areas drop different Enchantment Books. Rifts in the Sift drop the Sift-exclusive books (Swirling, Power Amplifier, Tumbleshot). Deep Dark Dungeons drop their own regional pool. This makes Rifts mandatory for completing your Enchantment Book collection.
    • Session limit: Both Dungeons and Rifts can only be completed once per session. Once cleared, they are gone until you reload the game.

    What Do Rifts Drop?

Every completed Rift rewards an Obsidian Chest at the exit. The chest consistently contains:

    • Echo Shards — The primary reward. You need Echo Shards to apply and upgrade enchantments at the Enchantsmith. They can also be used to upgrade merchants and reroll gear stats. You can carry a maximum of 100 Echo Shards at a time. Anything over the cap is lost, so spend them regularly.
    • Enchantment Books — Usually one or two per Rift. This is the main reason to run Rifts repeatedly. The chest at the end of a Rift almost always contains at least one Enchantment Book until you have unlocked around 26 books in your collection. After that the rate drops slightly, but rare regional books still appear.
    • Gear — Weapons, armor, and ranged weapons drop from the chest and from enemies throughout the encounter. Rift enemies can drop gear with solid rolls, and the final chest often contains a higher rarity item.
    • Emeralds — Emeralds drop from enemies and chests throughout the Rift. Useful for purchasing gear from the Merchant in Brave Haven.

Enemies inside the Rift also drop loot as you fight through it. Soul-Corrupted elites are the main source of mid-run Echo Shard drops, making it worth killing every glowing blue enemy you come across rather than rushing past them.

Enchantment Books That Drop Exclusively from Rifts

Some Enchantment Books only appear in specific regional loot pools. Three books are exclusive to the Sift areas accessed through Rifts:

    • Swirling — One of the strongest AoE weapon enchantments. Deals up to 100% weapon damage to nearby enemies at Tier 3. Sift and Overworld Rift drops.
    • Power Amplifier — Boosts damage on your next attack after artifact use. Drops from Sift areas.
    • Tumbleshot — Fires arrows when you roll. Exclusive to The Sift loot pool. Only obtainable from Sift Rifts and Sift dungeons.

If you are missing these three books, running Rifts is the only way to get them. The drop chance from any specific book pool is approximately 1 in 6 per chest, so expect to run multiple Rifts before each book appears. For the full list of every Enchantment Book and where each one drops, read our Minecraft Dungeons 2 All Enchantments guide.

The Sift: What to Expect Inside

The Sift is a striking dimension. Its environment is made up of red and orange stone, green vegetation, ichor pools, and sculk. It looks beautiful, but it is dangerous in ways the Overworld is not.

    Colorful Liquid Is Always Lethal

The colorful pools of liquid spread across the Sift floor are hazardous. Walking into them deals damage. This is not obvious the first time you enter, and many new players take unnecessary damage by stepping into what looks like decorative scenery. Always move around pools, not through them. During frantic fights, use your map awareness and dodge roll to stay on safe ground.

The Sift Has More Vertical Gameplay

The Sift introduces more platforming and vertical traversal than the Overworld. Jump pads, elevated areas, and platforms over hazards appear throughout Sift dungeons and Rift encounters. Pay attention to the environment and use your jump attack to cross gaps or reach chest areas off the main path.

Support Mobs Are a Serious Threat

Sift encounters include support enemy types, specifically creatures that beam healing or buffs into nearby allies. These small, seemingly low-threat mobs make every nearby enemy nearly unkillable while active. Kill the support mob first, then deal with the group. This rule applies to every pack you encounter in the Sift. Ignore the support mob and a fight that should take 15 seconds can drag on for a minute or more.

    Possessed Enemies Glow Purple

The Sift also features possessed enemies: standard mobs with a faint purple glow and a translucent shroud. Possessed enemies are significantly more dangerous than their size suggests. A possessed common archer can deal more damage than an elite golem. If you see the purple tint, drop everything and focus that enemy immediately. Possessed mobs can also spread corruption to nearby enemies if left alive too long.

How to Use Rifts for Endgame Farming

After finishing the campaign, Rifts become a core part of the endgame farming loop. Here is how to use them efficiently:

    Check the Map Every Session

Rifts spawn in new positions each time you load the game. Make checking the map your first action after logging in so you know where all active Rifts are before you start moving. Plan your route to hit multiple Rifts in one session.

Run Rifts During Flow or Thrive

If you have the option, save your toughest Rift boss encounters for Flow or Thrive tides. Do not start a difficult boss fight during Endure. The combination of tougher mobs and disabled passive soul regen makes long fights much harder than they need to be. Wait out the Endure tide by clearing easier content or returning to town, then come back when the tide shifts.

Do Not Cap Your Echo Shards

You can only hold 100 Echo Shards at one time. Any shards that drop when you are at the cap are lost permanently. Make a habit of spending your Echo Shards at the Enchantsmith between Rift runs. Apply enchantments, upgrade Enchantsmith tiers, or reroll gear stats at the Blacksmith — anything to keep your shard count below the cap before entering the next Rift.

Rush the Boss When Farming Books

If you already have plenty of gear and your main goal is Enchantment Books, you do not need to kill every enemy in the Rift. Move through the encounter, skip optional packs, and get to the boss or final ambush as fast as possible. The Obsidian Chest at the end is where the Enchantment Books come from. Killing everything in the room before it does not increase your book drop rate.

    Farm Rifts Alongside Soul Storms

Soul Storms are timed events that appear roughly every hour and last around 40 minutes. They are the best source of high-quality gear in the game. When a Soul Storm is active, run Rifts inside the storm zone first since they have enhanced rewards during the event. Once the storm ends, continue running standard Rifts for books and Echo Shards between events. This loop keeps you consistently progressing your character and build.

    Rifts in Co-Op Play

Rifts support up to four players in co-op and are one of the best co-op activities in the game. A few things to keep in mind when running Rifts as a group:

    • Enter the Rift together. If players split up and some go through the Rift while others stay in the Overworld, the group becomes separated. Enter as a full party at the same time.
    • Spread out enough to avoid AoE. The Sift has encounters with area damage abilities and lightning circles. Bunching together means one ability can hit your whole group. Stay spread far enough to avoid this while staying close enough to revive each other.
    • Assign one player to call out support mobs. In the chaos of a group fight, it is easy to miss the small support enemies beaming into a pack. Having one player whose job is to watch for and call out those mobs makes encounters go much faster.
    • Thrive tide is best for co-op runs. Faster artifact cooldowns and soul generation means every player in the group gets more uptime on their active abilities. Co-op Rift runs during Thrive are extremely strong, especially for soul-heavy builds.

Tips for Completing Rifts More Efficiently

    • Bring a healing artifact. The Sift is more aggressive than the Overworld. Running pure damage artifacts without any healing option leads to a lot of unnecessary deaths, especially solo. Even one healing artifact changes the experience significantly.
    • Use soul artifacts during Thrive. The soul-rich environment of the Sift already boosts your soul gain naturally. During the Thrive tide, this gets amplified further. Soul builds are at their absolute strongest in a Sift Rift during Thrive.
    • Watch your floor. Ichor pools and other Sift hazards appear in the middle of combat. Keep a corner of your awareness on the floor while fighting, especially during ambush waves when enemies push you around. Roll toward safe ground, not just away from enemies.
    • Do not enter a Rift under-geared. Rifts are harder than standard Overworld content. If you are still early in the campaign and finding even regular enemies difficult, clear more Overworld dungeons and grab better gear before tackling Rifts. The Sift does not ease you in gently.
    • Keep an eye on the Sift Tide indicator. The current tide is shown in the corner of your screen. Plan around it rather than ignoring it. A Thrive tide is worth pushing hard. An Endure tide is worth playing conservatively.
    • Reload to refresh Rifts. Once you have cleared all active Rifts in a session, saving and reloading spawns a new set. You do not need to wait for a timer or do anything special. Simply quit to the main menu and come back in.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are Rifts in Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Rifts are dimensional portals that appear randomly on the Overworld map. Stepping through one takes you to the Sift dimension for an instanced encounter — either a boss fight or a procedurally generated area with an ambush at the end. Completing the encounter rewards an Obsidian Chest containing Echo Shards, Enchantment Books, gear, and emeralds.

When do Rifts unlock in Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Rifts become available early in the story, after completing the first two Overworld core quests. You do not need to finish the main campaign to access them. Once unlocked, they appear on the Overworld map at the start of each session.

What are the Sift Tides in Rifts?

Every Rift you enter operates under one of three Sift Tides. Flow has no effect. Thrive speeds up soul generation and reduces artifact cooldowns, making it the best tide for offense-heavy play. Endure spawns more powerful enemies and disables passive soul regeneration, making it the toughest tide. The current tide is shown in the top corner of your screen while inside the Sift.

How often do new Rifts spawn in Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Rifts spawn at the start of each game session. Once you have cleared all active Rifts, quit to the main menu and reload the game. A new set of Rifts will spawn in fresh positions when you return. There is no waiting period or timer.

What is the difference between Rifts and Dungeons?

Both are procedurally generated encounters that drop Echo Shards, Enchantment Books, and gear. The key differences are that Rifts take place in the Sift dimension and are affected by the Sift Tide system, while regular Dungeons are Overworld-based and have no tides. Rifts also drop Sift-exclusive Enchantment Books like Swirling, Power Amplifier, and Tumbleshot that cannot be found anywhere else.

Can you run Rifts in co-op?

Yes. Rifts support up to four players in co-op. The whole party should enter the Rift together through the same portal. Splitting up at the rift entrance is a common mistake that separates the group. Co-op Rifts during the Thrive tide are especially strong since faster artifact cooldowns and soul generation benefit every player simultaneously.

What is the fastest way to get Echo Shards in Minecraft Dungeons 2?

The four main sources of Echo Shards are Rifts, Dungeons, boss fights, and Soul Storms. Rifts and Dungeons are the most consistently available sources on a per-session basis. Join Soul Storms when they appear since they are the highest-value event for both Echo Shards and gear quality. Kill every Soul-Corrupted enemy you encounter in Rifts since they are the main mid-run source of Echo Shard drops. Remember that the cap is 100 Echo Shards, so spend them before each Rift run to avoid losing drops.

Is the Sift water dangerous in Minecraft Dungeons 2?

Yes. The colorful pools of liquid on the floor of the Sift deal damage when you walk through them. They are not decorative. Always move around them during exploration and use your dodge roll to avoid them during fights when enemies push you toward hazardous areas.
