Next Battlefield Game: Everything We Know So Far

The next Battlefield game is in development, bringing back classic classes and a modern setting. Here’s all the latest news on its release date, gameplay, and more.

Battlefield is Back! Here’s Everything We Know About the Next Game

The next Battlefield game is officially in the works!

After the rocky launch of Battlefield 2042, EA is aiming for a fresh start with a new title. Vince Zampella, known for his work on Apex Legends and Titanfall, is leading the charge to bring Battlefield back to its roots.

While we don’t have an official name or a full gameplay reveal yet, we already know quite a bit. Here’s everything we’ve learned so far.

When Will the Next Battlefield Game Be Released?

Right now, there is no official release date.

The game is still in its pre-Alpha stage, with developers testing it every week. Vince Zampella hinted that more details will be revealed in 2025, but a full release likely won’t happen until 2026 or 2027.

EA has also introduced Battlefield Labs, a playtesting program where select players from Europe and North America can try the game early and give feedback on mechanics and game modes.

So while there’s still a long wait ahead, EA is making sure this game gets proper testing before launch.

Which Platforms Will the Next Battlefield Be On?

Since it’s still early in development, nothing is confirmed yet.

However, playtests for Battlefield Labs are currently happening on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, meaning the final game will likely launch on these platforms.

With mid-gen consoles like the PS5 Pro coming soon and next-gen consoles expected in a few years, it’s possible we’ll see upgraded versions in the future.

As for Nintendo, don’t expect the game to run on the current Switch, but EA hasn’t ruled out a possible release for the Switch 2.

What Is the Next Battlefield’s Setting?

The next Battlefield game will be set in modern times, somewhere between 2027 and 2030.

Reports suggest the story will involve a private military group fighting NATO, with locations like Gibraltar and the United States playing a role.

This means we’re leaving behind both the historical settings of BF1 and 1942 and the futuristic worlds of 2042 and 2142. Instead, expect modern weapons and technology—similar to the Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 era.

“If you look back to the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 era,” Zampella said. “We have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well.”

Who’s Making the Next Battlefield Game?

Four different studios are working on the game:

  • DICE – Handling multiplayer (Creators of Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront).
  • Criterion Games – Helping with both multiplayer and single-player (Burnout, Need for Speed).
  • Motive Studios – Focused on single-player (Dead Space Remake, Star Wars: Squadrons).
  • Ripple Effect – Working on a new “Battlefield experience” in the 2042 universe (Battlefield Portal developers).

This massive team effort means EA is taking its time to ensure quality.

Gameplay: What Can We Expect?

Classic Classes Are Back

One of the biggest changes is the return of traditional class-based gameplay.

The Specialists from BF2042 are gone. Instead, players will be able to pick from familiar classes like Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon.

“It didn’t work. It didn’t fit,” Zampella admitted. “Specialists will not be coming back. Classes are at the core of Battlefield, and we’re going back to that.”

Smaller, More Focused Matches

Forget 128-player chaos—the new Battlefield is bringing back 64-player matches on better-designed maps.

“I’d rather have nice, dense, well-designed play spaces,” Zampella said, meaning we can expect tighter, more strategic battles instead of giant open maps with little action.

More Weapons, More Maps, More Destruction

  • 45 weapons at launch (double what BF2042 had at release).
  • At least 10 multiplayer maps in development.
  • Improved destruction, with a system similar to Rainbow Six Siege, where bullets interact with different materials in unique ways.

New Movement Mechanics

The game is working on more realistic movement, including the ability to pick up and carry downed teammates—a feature that could change how revives work.

New Game Modes and Features

  • Battlefield Portal is returning, allowing players to create and customize game modes.
  • EA is experimenting with different game types, possibly including a new Battle Royale mode or an extraction shooter like Escape from Tarkov.

More Polished at Launch

EA knows that BF2042 had a rough launch, and they are focused on making sure the next game is stable and polished from day one.

Final Thoughts: A Bright Future for Battlefield

The next Battlefield is shaping up to be a return to form.

With classic classes, better maps, and modern combat, EA is listening to fans and bringing back what made the series great. While we still have a long wait ahead, the early details are promising.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what else EA reveals in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates!
