Nintendo Switch 2 May Surpass 5 Million Sales in Launch Month Despite Early Reporting Error

Despite reports floating around the web, Nintendo hasn’t officially sold 5 million Switch 2 consoles—at least, not yet. Turns out, the figure that briefly popped up on an official Nintendo investor site was just a placeholder that accidentally went public. But that doesn’t mean sales aren’t booming.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, coming in hot with beefed-up internal hardware, new features like GameChat, and even mouse support through its Joy-Con controllers.

That’s a pretty slick follow-up to the original Switch, which debuted over eight years ago. Naturally, fans were quick to jump on early sales numbers when they saw the 5 million figure appear online.

But according to financial analyst David Gibson of MST Financial, that number was never meant to represent actual data—it was just a stand-in on a web page that went live by mistake.

Gibson, who has contacts inside Nintendo, clarified that the placeholder wasn’t based on projections or real-time figures. Even more, the page appeared nearly a week before June ended, meaning even if it had been a legit number, it wouldn’t have reflected the full launch month.

That said, there’s actually a silver lining. Gibson believes that when Nintendo does release the real June sales data on August 1, the Switch 2 will have surpassed that 5 million milestone—by an estimated 400,000 units. That would put the total closer to 5.4 million consoles sold in under a month.

Insiders had already predicted a record-setting debut for the new console, with around 3 million Switch 2 units moved by launch day—nearly beating the day-one combined totals of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. If Gibson’s forecast holds up, the Switch 2 could go down as one of Nintendo’s most successful console launches ever.

Of course, it still has a long road ahead if it wants to take the crown. The Nintendo DS remains the company’s top-selling system with a mind-blowing 154 million units sold as of February 2025. The original Switch was trailing it by less than 2 million units at that point, making it a solid third on the all-time sales chart (right behind the PlayStation 2 at the very top).
