TL;DR
- Sasaki Ganryu is Musashi’s rival swordsman. He appears twice — as a first story boss and later in an Altered form backed by his Oni, Gioh.
- The first fight is a straightforward parry and Issen duel. Learn his two attack strings, wait for clean windows, and drain his stamina for Break Issen.
- At around 50% health in the first fight, he adds a grab. Use a Perfect Dodge — a normal dodge will not save you.
- His blue grab attack can be countered by pressing dodge (Circle/B) right before his hand connects.
- The Altered fight adds his Oni companion Gioh, who attacks independently and can refill Ganryu’s stamina if not interrupted.
- Shoot Gioh in the neck with your Oni Bow whenever she extends toward the red flower plants to prevent stamina recovery.
- Use purple soul Break Issen targets in the Altered fight to build your Oni Awakening gauge for Issen in Oni form.
- Defence-first is the right mindset for both fights. Ganryu punishes greed hard.
How to Beat Sasaki Ganryu in Onimusha Way of the Sword
Sasaki Ganryu is the first real test Onimusha Way of the Sword puts in front of you. Unlike the Genma you clear through the temple stages, Ganryu fights as a trained swordsman — fast, deliberate, and immediately punishing if you swing recklessly. The fight appears twice in the full game. First as a story duel that acts as the game’s skill check, then again late in the campaign in an Altered form backed by his Oni companion Gioh, which is one of the hardest fights in the entire game on Carnage difficulty. This guide covers both encounters in full — every attack, every counter, and the mindset shift you need between them.
If you are brand new to the game’s systems, our tips and tricks for beginners gives you the fundamentals before you walk into this fight. For a deeper look at every Issen variant and how the parry system works, the Onimusha Way of the Sword mastering combat guide has everything you need. Once you have the fight down and want to push further, our Flow State trophy guide shows you how to chain Issen kills for one of the game’s most satisfying combat achievements.
Who Is Sasaki Ganryu in Onimusha Way of the Sword
Sasaki Ganryu is presented as a long-standing rival to Miyamoto Musashi. The name is a nod to the historical duel between Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro — whose style name was Ganryu — reimagined inside the game’s dark, Genma-haunted version of early Edo-period Kyoto. He has gained Onimusha powers of his own, which is why the fight carries real weight in the story. This is not a random enemy encounter. It is a duel between two swordsmen who share a history, and the game designs the fight to feel exactly like that.
He appears in two encounters across the full campaign. The first is the demo boss fight at Kiyomizu-dera Temple — the same fight from the free demo. The second is the far more demanding Altered version later in the story, where he returns enhanced and accompanied by Gioh, his Oni companion.
Sasaki Ganryu – First Fight (Story Boss #6)
This is rated as a 3.5 out of 10 difficulty fight — the game’s true first story boss after the early Byakue encounters. It is a one-on-one sword duel. No Genma, no tricks, no environmental hazards. Just two swordsmen reading each other.
Phase One — Learning the Patterns
Ganryu spends most of the first phase weaving around the arena and combining quick piercing strikes with slower, wave-like delayed attacks. All of his attacks are clearly telegraphed even when they are delayed. The delayed timing is the most important thing to understand early. Do not press attack as soon as you see him start the motion. Wait for the weapon arc to complete, read the delay, then parry.
His main attack strings in Phase One:
- Three-hit poke combo: Two rapid forward pokes followed by a harder finishing strike. The red-glow finisher on this combo is the one to respect most. Parrying all three gives you the best stamina damage and a clean Issen window after the third hit.
- Kick into slash combo: He slams his foot down followed by a sword slash. If you are not confident parrying the kick, dodge it and parry the following slash instead. Either approach works.
- Air stomp: Ganryu occasionally leaps into the air and comes down with a stomp attack. This is slow enough to either dodge cleanly or shut down with a well-timed Issen. Issen on the stomp is very satisfying and gives a large soul drop.
- Blue grab attack: He extends his left hand toward Musashi. This is a blue-highlighted attack. Press dodge (Circle on PS5, B on Xbox) right before the hand connects to counter it. A normal parry will not work here.
Phase Two — The Grab Enters the Fight
At around 50% health, Ganryu adds a grab to his moveset. This is the moment most players die on their first attempt — they try to dodge it normally and get caught. The grab requires a Perfect Dodge, not a standard dodge. Time the dodge in the parry window as the grab comes in, and Musashi slips out cleanly with a follow-up opening. A mistimed dodge gets you grabbed and takes a heavy hit.
The rest of Phase Two keeps the same attack patterns from Phase One but with faster spacing between hits. His thrusting strikes in particular land noticeably quicker. Keep parrying rather than blocking — holding guard through this phase drains stamina fast and risks the stagger animation that leaves you wide open.
Strategy for the First Ganryu Fight
The correct mindset is defence first, offence second. Ganryu punishes greed. If you swing freely after every parry you will eat a fast counter. Instead, take one or two attacks after each successful parry, then return to guard position and read his next move.
- Build stamina damage through parries. Every clean parry chips at his Stamina Gauge. When that gauge empties, Break Issen becomes available. Target a body part — red for direct HP damage, purple for soul drops. In the first fight, targeting red is usually the faster path to ending things.
- Use Deflect Issen as your safe counter practice. Hold block just before his attack lands, wait for the guard flash, then press attack. This is safer than True Issen and still drains his stamina meaningfully.
- Go for True Issen on the stomp attack. The air stomp has a very readable wind-up and a slow descent. It is the best practice opportunity for True Issen in the whole fight.
- Save your Oni Armament for Phase Two. Once the grab enters the fight and the pressure increases, activate the Oni Armament for a burst of damage and yellow soul recovery. Use the soul drops from a Break Issen to refuel before you activate it.
- Do not chase when he repositions. Ganryu moves around the arena deliberately. Let him come to you rather than running at him. Running into his next attack is how most players take unnecessary damage.

Sasaki Ganryu Altered Form – Second Fight (Story Boss #7)
This is rated a 7 out of 10 difficulty fight — the second-toughest encounter in the entire game. On Carnage difficulty, Ganryu can kill Musashi in two hits. Even on standard Action difficulty, this fight demands full understanding of the parry, deflect, and Issen systems. It unfolds across two phases, each with its own separate health bar.
The critical new element is Gioh — Ganryu’s Oni companion. She fights alongside him with her own attacks and has a stamina-recovery mechanic that will drag the fight out indefinitely if you do not deal with it.
Understanding Gioh’s Role
Gioh attacks independently from Ganryu with quick katana strikes from her tentacles. These can be deflected just as Ganryu’s attacks can, but they are not always easy to see coming. The key habit is keeping half an eye on Gioh’s tentacles even when focused on Ganryu.
The most important mechanic to learn immediately: Gioh can extend her neck toward the red flower plants scattered around the arena and siphon them to replenish Ganryu’s stamina bar. When she starts extending toward a plant, draw your Oni Bow and shoot her in the neck immediately. This breaks her concentration and prevents the stamina recovery. If you miss this window, Ganryu’s bar refills and your work draining it is wasted. Make watching for this animation a priority throughout the fight.
Altered Form — Phase One
Ganryu’s katana attacks stay broadly the same from the first fight but land much faster. His thrusting strike in particular is significantly quicker. The extra speed means your parry window is tighter — do not try to react to the attack starting. Read the wind-up and commit to the parry before the strike launches.
His additional Phase One attacks in the Altered form:
- Air slash: He leaps into the air and comes down with a slash. This is slow enough to deflect comfortably. Deflect Issen works very well here.
- Gioh’s tentacle strikes: Quick attacks from her katanas that appear alongside Ganryu’s own combos. Deflect these — the timing is independent from Ganryu’s attacks.
- Gioh’s stamina drain: She extends her neck toward the red flower plants. Shoot with Oni Bow immediately to interrupt.
When you deplete Ganryu’s stamina bar in Phase One, go for purple soul Break Issen targets rather than red. Purple drops yellow, blue, and purple souls — this builds your Oni Awakening gauge and Oni Power gauge simultaneously. The soul income from purple Break Issen in this fight is the fastest path to transforming into Oni form, where Issen counters become significantly easier to land.
Altered Form — Phase Two
Phase Two begins when Ganryu shouts “Smash him flat, Gioh!” — Gioh’s tentacles turn purple and she gains two new attacks on top of her Phase One kit.
- Ground slam tentacles: Gioh slams her tentacles into the ground. Dodge this with a Perfect Dodge or time an Issen against the slam itself.
- Neck lash while you attack Ganryu: When you are pressing offense on Ganryu, Gioh will sometimes lash out with her neck at the same time. Keep her in your peripheral vision even when focused on Ganryu.
- Gioh’s blue mouth grab: This appears in both phases but becomes more common in Phase Two. Counter it by pressing dodge (Circle/B) at exactly the right moment. Getting caught costs a large soul drain on top of health damage.
About a third of the way into Phase Two, Gioh wraps Ganryu’s katana in Malice. This unlocks his most dangerous attack — a blisteringly fast white-glowing strike. White-glowing attacks cannot be Issen’d. They can only be parried or deflected. This attack is capable of killing Musashi outright on Carnage difficulty and does massive damage even on lower settings. When his sword starts glowing white, deflect rather than attempting Issen.
In the closing stages of Phase Two, Ganryu imbues the ground with Malice, sending red sword-slash waves toward you. These can be deflected or dodged through cleanly.
Strategy for the Altered Ganryu Fight
- Prioritise the Oni Bow on Gioh. Every time she moves toward the red flower plants, interrupt her. This is not optional. Letting her restore Ganryu’s stamina bar repeatedly makes the fight unwinnable under pressure.
- Go purple on every Break Issen. Yellow, blue, and purple soul income from purple targets is more valuable in this fight than the raw HP damage from red targets. It builds your Oni Awakening gauge consistently.
- Transform into Oni form whenever the gauge fills. Oni Awakening state makes Issen timing significantly easier. Land as many Issen counters as you can while transformed. Save the R1/RB finisher for when the gauge is almost empty — not before.
- Use the Oni Armament actively. Activating the Armament generates additional purple souls, which in turn speeds up your route to Oni Awakening state. Do not hoard it — use it when the gauge is ready and the fight pressure is high.
- Read Gioh’s tentacle timing separately from Ganryu. She attacks on her own schedule. Keep your camera angle aware of her position even during Ganryu’s attack strings.
- On Carnage, use the Defense fighting style. Switching to the Defense control scheme makes stamina management easier and reduces the learning curve on a fight this punishing.
- Recommended charm build for Altered Ganryu: Maxed Charm of Awakening, maxed Charm of Oni Power, maxed Fencer’s Strength Charm. This setup maximises your gauge income and offensive output when you land clean windows.
Common Mistakes in the Ganryu Fights
- Attacking after every parry without reading the next move. Ganryu counters quickly. Take one or two clean hits after a parry then reset. Do not chain aggression blindly.
- Using a standard dodge on the grab. The Phase One grab requires a Perfect Dodge timed in the parry window. A normal dodge gets you caught every time.
- Dodging instead of parrying his regular attacks. Dodging his sword combos works mechanically but gives up all the Issen and stamina drain opportunities. The fight drags out significantly longer if you dodge-heavy rather than parry-heavy.
- Ignoring Gioh in the Altered fight. She is not a cosmetic addition. She attacks, she restores Ganryu’s stamina, and she makes the fight significantly harder if you treat her as background noise.
- Spending soul drops on red in the Altered fight. Red is faster HP damage but misses the Oni Awakening income that makes Phase Two manageable. Purple is the right call in almost every Break Issen situation here.
- Trying to Issen the white-glowing attack in Phase Two. White attacks cannot be countered with Issen. Parry or deflect only — attempting Issen on a white attack means eating the hit.
Difficulty Settings – Which to Use
The game ships with Story and Action difficulty presets plus more granular options added after demo feedback. For the first Ganryu fight, Action difficulty is the right setting. The attack windows are fair and the fight is designed to teach you the parry system rather than punish.
For the Altered Ganryu fight on a first playthrough, there is no shame in dropping to Story if Gioh’s addition makes the fight overwhelming. The mechanics you are learning — parry timing, Deflect Issen, Oni Bow interrupts — are identical on both settings. Learn the patterns on Story, then return to Action for the Boss Rematch if you want the full challenge. The Glutton for Punishment trophy requires beating all Boss Rematch opponents on all difficulty levels, so you will face Altered Ganryu again regardless.
Carnage difficulty is only available in New Game Plus after finishing the story once. The Altered Ganryu fight on Carnage is rated 7 out of 10 and is the second hardest fight in the entire game. Save Carnage for after you know every attack by memory.
Demo Version of Sasaki Ganryu – What’s Different
If you played the free demo, you already have Ganryu experience — but there are a few differences worth knowing before the full game fight. Musashi is deliberately stronger in the demo than he would normally be at that stage in the full game. This makes the demo fight slightly easier than the full story version. The attack patterns are identical, but the damage numbers you took and dealt in the demo will not perfectly match the main game at equivalent health and equipment levels.
Your demo save does not transfer progress into the full game. However, keeping the demo save file means you can claim the Kubi Akari charm when you load the full game. If you completed the expanded demo and saw Daidara, you may also have a stat boost for Musashi carried over as a save bonus. Check your charm inventory at the start of the full game for these rewards before heading into the first Ganryu encounter.
The game is available on Steam, PlayStation Store, Xbox, and directly from the official Capcom site. The free demo with the first Ganryu fight is available separately on Steam at no cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you counter Sasaki Ganryu’s grab attack?
Ganryu’s grab is a blue-highlighted attack. Press the dodge button (Circle on PS5, B on Xbox) right before his hand connects — not a moment after you see it start. A normal parry does not work on blue attacks. In Phase Two of the first fight, he gains an additional grab that requires a Perfect Dodge rather than a standard dodge. Time it in the parry window and Musashi slips clear with a follow-up opening. Miss the timing and you take a heavy hit.
How do you deal with Gioh in the Altered Ganryu fight?
Gioh attacks with her tentacle katanas throughout the fight and can also extend her neck toward the red flower plants to refill Ganryu’s Stamina Gauge. The moment you see her extend toward a plant, draw your Oni Bow and shoot her in the neck to interrupt it. This is the most important mechanic in the second fight — missing it repeatedly makes the fight unwinnable under sustained pressure. Also watch for her blue mouth grab, which must be dodged with precise timing.
Should I go for red or purple on Break Issen against Ganryu?
For the first fight, red targets give faster HP damage and a quicker finish — either choice works. For the Altered Ganryu fight, purple targets are almost always the better call. Purple Break Issen drops yellow, blue, and purple souls simultaneously, which builds your Oni Awakening and Oni Power gauges much faster. Getting into Oni Awakening form makes Issen timing significantly easier and is key to managing Phase Two.
What is the best build for the Altered Ganryu fight on Carnage?
Use the Defence control scheme, equip the Charm of Awakening, Charm of Oni Power, and Fencer’s Strength Charm — all maxed. Bring Amulets of Introspection to widen Issen and parry windows, plus Sun-Dried Hozuki for emergency health restoration. Save consumables for Phase Two and the white-glow attack phase where a single mistake costs the most health.
