TL;DR โ Key Takeaways
- The Gold-Masked One is an optional recurring boss encountered at Long Pillar (Dragon Statue) locations tied to the Bloodline Awakening questline.
- Normal attacks do zero damage โ you can only hurt him after a successful parry, a perfect dodge, or when his Sha-Chi bar is fully broken.
- Blue flash attacks (Brutal Moves) = parry with L1. Red flash attacks (Killer Moves) = dodge with R1. Never mix them up.
- His grab attack is a red flash โ dodge it, do not try to block or parry.
- The first encounter rewards the Counterstrike Bracers โ a +20% damage bonus for 2 seconds after any parry.
- He appears five times total across different regions, and each fight adds new moves and difficulty.
- There is no rush โ come back after reaching Pangzhen if the first fight is too tough.
Who Is The Gold-Masked One in Phantom Blade Zero?
The Gold-Masked One โ also called Mรณ Yuan โ is one of the most memorable characters in Phantom Blade Zero. He is voiced and motion-captured by martial arts legend Donnie Yen, who also served as a creative consultant on the game’s combat design since 2023. Soul’s father, Mo Yuan, has been hiding in plain sight since the very first trailer.
In gameplay terms, he is an optional boss you encounter at locations called Long Pillars (also called Dragon Statues). These are part of the Bloodline Awakening questline, which spans multiple regions of the game. Each encounter is a one-on-one duel that teaches you a different aspect of Phantom Blade Zero’s combat โ especially parrying and dodging.
He is tough. He is fast. And the fight works nothing like any other boss in the game.
How to Find The Gold-Masked One (First Encounter)
The first Long Pillar is in Weeping Creek Valley, inside the Creek Valley Plains area. To reach it, you need to complete the Deep in the Valley quest, which means:
- Defeating The Hunt boss to earn the Hunter’s Chain Sickle
- Using the Chain Sickle to grab the Sha-Chi Tower Base Camp Gate Key from the tower summit
- Opening the gate at Creek Valley Plains Entrance
- Picking up the Rusted Loong Key from the gold chest behind the Long Pillar Overlook Bell
- Using it to open the cave gate near the Congeleaf pickup
At the end of the cave, you activate the Weeping Creek Long Pillar Bell. The Dragon Statue is right there in the middle of the area. Interact with it to trigger the duel.

Why The Gold-Masked One Is Different From Other Bosses
Most bosses in Phantom Blade Zero reward constant aggression. Your basic attacks cost no Sha-Chi and always connect, so staying on the offensive is usually the right move.
The Gold-Masked One completely flips that. Normal attacks do nothing to him. You can swing all day and not a single hit will register. He will just brush them off.
This fight is intentionally designed as a combat tutorial in disguise. It forces you to master the game’s parry and dodge system rather than relying on raw pressure. Think of him less as a typical boss and more as a very aggressive sparring partner that will punish you for playing lazy.

The Only Ways to Damage The Gold-Masked One
There are exactly three windows where you can actually deal damage:
- After a successful parry โ parry one of his blue flash (Brutal Move) attacks, then immediately attack him in the follow-up window
- After a perfect dodge โ perfectly dodge one of his red flash (Killer Move) attacks and hit him in the punish window that opens up
- When his Sha-Chi bar is fully depleted โ he staggers and becomes vulnerable for a brief period; unload your hardest hits here
Every other moment, your attacks are wasted. So the whole fight is about reading his flashes, countering correctly, and landing your damage in those short windows.
Understanding His Attack Types: Blue Flash vs Red Flash
Phantom Blade Zero uses a colour-coded system for every significant enemy attack. The Gold-Masked One uses both types heavily โ and the consequences of getting it wrong are severe.
Blue Flash โ Brutal Moves (Parry These)
When you see his weapon flash blue, that is a Brutal Move. You have two options:
- Block โ hold guard to absorb the hit, but this drains a heavy chunk of your Sha-Chi
- Parry โ tap the parry input (L1 on controller, Q on PC) at the right moment to deflect it, drain his Sha-Chi, and open him up for your counter-attack
Parrying is almost always the right choice here. It drains his Sha-Chi, costs you nothing, and creates your damage window. If you find yourself struggling with timing, try pressing both bumpers at once โ it covers the input window a little better.
Red Flash โ Killer Moves (Dodge These)
When you see a red flash, that is a Killer Move โ and it is unblockable, unparryable. Blocking a red flash attack does zero damage reduction and still burns Sha-Chi on top of that.
Your only correct response is to dodge (R1 or Space on PC). If your timing is perfect, you trigger Ghoststep โ Soul teleports behind him and you get a brief slow-motion counter window for free hits.
His grab attack is a red flash. If you get grabbed, he will hit you in a brutal combo and you can take serious damage. Dodge it โ do not try to be clever.
Step-by-Step Strategy for Beating The Gold-Masked One
Step 1 โ Stop Attacking First
This is the hardest habit to break. The moment the fight starts, resist the urge to swing. Stand back, watch his movements, and wait for a flash colour to appear before you do anything.
Step 2 โ React to the Flash Colour
Blue = parry with L1 (or Q on PC). Red = dodge with R1 (or Space on PC). That is the entire combat loop of this fight. Everything else is just execution and patience.
Step 3 โ Attack Only in Counter Windows
After a successful parry or perfect dodge, hit him immediately. Do not hesitate. Get your attacks in and then back off to wait for the next opportunity. Jagged Steel works well here if you have it โ he is susceptible to bleed, which lets you stack extra damage over the fight.
Step 4 โ Spend Everything When His Sha-Chi Breaks
Each time his Sha-Chi bar empties, he staggers. This is your biggest damage window. Use your Sha-Chi Combos (heavy attacks), your Phantom Edge, and any Power Surge charge you have saved. This is when you get meaningful chunks of his health bar, so make every second count.
Step 5 โ Be Patient. This Fight Takes Time.
He has a large health pool. Even with perfect play, this is not a quick fight. The first encounter is a battle of attrition. Stay calm, keep reading his attacks, and do not panic when the fight stretches long.
Best Accessories and Build for This Fight
Your accessories matter more in this fight than usual because your damage windows are limited. The better your burst damage in those windows, the faster the fight ends.
- Quick Hand Pendant โ increases one-handed weapon damage
- Ancient Armor Fragment โ damage negation, helps you survive mistakes
- Jewel’s Knot โ increases your HP pool
- Resonance Talisman โ boosts Sha-Chi, giving you more resource for heavy attacks
- Counterstrike Bracers (once unlocked) โ ironic but useful in later encounters; +20% damage for 2 seconds after a parry is huge
For weapons, any sword-type works well. Jagged Steel is particularly useful because of its bleed capability, which means each counter window also stacks bleed damage over time.
Is It Worth Coming Back Later?
Yes โ and there is no shame in doing so. The first Gold-Masked One encounter happens in Weeping Creek Valley, which is early in the game. At that point, your Sha-Chi pool, weapon upgrades, and accessories are all at their lowest.
If the fight is destroying you, leave it. Progress through Crimson Forest. By the time you reach Pangzhen, you will have more HP, a larger Sha-Chi bar, stronger weapons, and polished accessories. The fight becomes significantly more manageable.
There is no consequence for coming back later. The Long Pillar stays active.
All Long Pillar Locations (All Five Encounters)
The Gold-Masked One appears five times across the game at different Long Pillar locations. Each subsequent fight adds new moves, faster combos, and tougher pressure. Here is where to find all of them:
- Weeping Creek Valley โ Inside the Rusted Loong Key cave in Creek Valley Plains. First encounter, focused on parrying fundamentals. Reward: Counterstrike Bracers.
- Crimson Forest โ Through the tunnel after the Iron Fever boss fight. Adds new aerial combo finishers and increased speed.
- Meigu Lake โ Island โ On the cliffside near the fishing village in the Discordance realm. In this encounter, he rapidly replenishes his own Sha-Chi, making guard-breaks much harder to hold onto.
- Meigu Lake โ Discordance โ At the other end of the cliffside in the mountain pass area. Use the Dread Axe to break through a gate to reach the pillar.
- Final encounter โ Later in the story, completing the full Bloodline Awakening quest. Reward: Kuye Temple Prayer Beads (a Phantom Edge).
Each fight deepens the story of Mo Yuan and Soul’s connection, and the boss gains genuinely new tricks in each region โ it is not just a stat bump.
What Do You Get for Beating The Gold-Masked One?
- Counterstrike Bracers โ First Weeping Creek Valley encounter. +20% damage for 2 seconds after any parry. Extremely strong throughout the whole game.
- Bloodline Awakening quest progression โ Each encounter advances this questline and adds story context about Soul’s origins.
- Kuye Temple Prayer Beads โ Completing the full Bloodline Awakening questline. A Phantom Edge (secondary weapon) that gives Soul a new combat ability.
- True Ending requirement โ The complete Bloodline Awakening questline is one of the prerequisites for unlocking the secret perfect ending in Phantom Blade Zero.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I damage The Gold-Masked One in Phantom Blade Zero?
Normal attacks have no effect on him. You can only deal damage after a successful parry, after a perfect dodge, or when his Sha-Chi bar is fully depleted. This is intentional โ the fight is designed to teach you the game’s core defensive systems.
How many times do you fight The Gold-Masked One?
You can fight him five times total across different Long Pillar locations โ in Weeping Creek Valley, Crimson Forest, and multiple spots in Meigu Lake. Each fight is harder than the last and adds to the Bloodline Awakening questline story.
What is the reward for beating The Gold-Masked One the first time?
You receive the Counterstrike Bracers, which boost your damage by 20% for 2 seconds after landing a parry. Given how parry-heavy the whole game is, this accessory stays useful for a long time.
What happens if I skip The Gold-Masked One?
The Bloodline Awakening questline stays incomplete, and you will miss the final Phantom Edge reward (Kuye Temple Prayer Beads). Completing all five encounters is also required to unlock the True Ending, so it is worth doing all of them.
Is The Gold-Masked One the hardest boss in Phantom Blade Zero?
The first encounter is one of the trickier early optional bosses specifically because most players have not fully internalized the parry and dodge system yet. He is not necessarily the hardest boss overall, but he is the most different โ and the most unforgiving if you fall back into old attack habits. Later Long Pillar encounters, especially Meigu Lake, are noticeably harder than the first.
