The Fanciest Pokemon in Lumiose City Is Back

If you’ve ever wanted to run a Pokemon grooming salon simulator within your Pokemon game, congratulations—Furfrou is here to make that dream a reality. This fancy poodle Pokemon returns in Pokemon Legends Z-A with all its fabulous forms (or “trims” as the game calls them), and unlocking them all involves teaching an aspiring groomer the ancient art of… Pokemon-assisted haircutting?

Yeah, it’s weird. But it’s also one of the more charming side questlines in the game, and completing it gives you access to nine different Furfrou styles. Let’s break down everything you need to know.

Where to Find Furfrou in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Before you can start playing Pokemon salon, you need to actually catch some Furfrou. This Normal-type poodle doesn’t show up until you’ve made significant progress through the game.

Furfrou spawn locations:

Both zones are accessible in the mid-to-late game, so if you haven’t reached them yet, keep progressing through the main story. Check our complete Wild Zones guide to see what else spawns in these areas.

Pro tip: Catch multiple Furfrou right now. Seriously. Each form change costs 500 Poké Dollars, and if you want a living Dex with all nine forms displayed, you’ll need nine separate Furfrou. Catching them all at once saves you from having to backtrack later.

Unlocking the Furfrou Trimmer Questline

The path to unlocking all Furfrou forms involves completing a three-part side mission series focused on helping an aspiring groomer perfect her craft. It’s actually pretty wholesome—you’re basically mentoring someone’s career dreams.

Finding the Trimmer NPC

Location details:

  • Head to Jaune Sector 6
  • Look for the entrance to Wild Zone 11
  • The NPC is positioned just above this entrance
  • She’ll have a side mission marker

Approach her to start the first quest in the series.

Quest 1: Becoming a Furfrou Trimmer

The first mission introduces you to the concept: your job is to demonstrate specific moves on a Substitute Doll so the trimmer’s Scyther can learn proper cutting techniques. Think of it as a Pokemon-themed beauty school training montage.

Quest objective: Teach Scyther the move Slash

Pokemon that know Slash:

  • Feraligatr – If you chose this as your starter Pokemon, you’re golden
  • Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard – Part of the Kanto starter trio
  • Scyther/Scizor – Learns it naturally
  • Skarmory – Flying/Steel type that knows Slash
  • Gible, Gabite, Garchomp – Dragon/Ground line
  • Gallade – Psychic/Fighting evolution

How to complete:

  1. Add a Pokemon that knows Slash to your party
  2. Approach the Substitute Doll next to the NPC
  3. Use Slash on the doll
  4. Watch the cutscene as Scyther learns the technique
  5. Claim your reward and unlock the first batch of Furfrou trims

This is the easiest quest in the series since Slash is a pretty common move. If you somehow don’t have any of these Pokemon, Charmander can be found fairly early—check our best early Pokemon guide for catching tips.

Quest 2: Becoming a Pro Furfrou Trimmer

After progressing further in the main story missions, the trimmer will have another request for you. She’s leveling up her skills, and so are the move requirements.

Quest objective: Demonstrate the move Razor Leaf

Pokemon that know Razor Leaf:

  • Chikorita (and evolutions) – Grass starter from Johto
  • Bulbasaur (and evolutions) – Grass/Poison Kanto starter
  • Florges – Evolved from Flabébé
  • Most Grass-type Pokemon – Check your box for Grass-types that learned it via level-up or TM

How to complete:

  1. Get a Pokemon with Razor Leaf in your party
  2. Return to the trimmer in Jaune Sector 6
  3. Use Razor Leaf on the Substitute Doll
  4. Complete the demonstration
  5. Unlock the second tier of Furfrou forms

Grass-types are abundant in Pokemon Legends Z-A, so this quest shouldn’t give you much trouble. If you’re stuck, any fully-evolved Grass starter will definitely have access to this move.

Quest 3: Becoming a Peerless Furfrou Trimmer

The final quest in the series represents the trimmer’s mastery of her craft. This time, she needs to learn precision cutting techniques from a more specialized move.

Quest objective: Show Scyther the move Psycho Cut

Pokemon that know Psycho Cut:

  • Gallade – Evolution of male Kirlia with Dawn Stone (recommended)
  • Kadabra/Alakazam – Can learn it via level-up or TM
  • Mewtwo – If you somehow have one

How to complete:

  1. Add a Pokemon with Psycho Cut to your team
  2. Visit the trimmer one last time
  3. Demonstrate Psycho Cut on the Substitute Doll
  4. Finish the questline
  5. Unlock all remaining Furfrou forms

Psycho Cut is less common than the previous moves, but Gallade is your best bet. The Ralts evolution line is accessible relatively early, and evolving a male Kirlia into Gallade specifically gives you access to this move.

Alternative: If you caught and evolved Abra earlier, Alakazam can also learn Psycho Cut through TMs or leveling.

All 9 Furfrou Trim Forms in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Once you’ve completed all three trimmer quests, you’ll have access to every Furfrou form available in the game. Here’s the complete list:

Furfrou Forms in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Available Trims:

  • Heart Trim – Adorned with heart-shaped fur patterns
  • Star Trim – Features star-shaped styling
  • Debutante Trim – Elegant, refined look
  • Diamond Trim – Geometric diamond patterns
  • La Reine Trim – French royalty-inspired (fitting for Lumiose City!)
  • Matron Trim – Sophisticated, mature styling
  • Dandy Trim – Dapper, masculine appearance
  • Pharaoh Trim – Ancient Egyptian-themed
  • Kabuki Trim – Traditional Japanese theater-inspired

Each trim is purely cosmetic—they don’t affect Furfrou’s stats, typing, or movepool in any way. This is all about aesthetics and collection completion.

How to Change Furfrou Forms

After unlocking the trimmer’s full skill set, you can return anytime to change your Furfrou’s appearance.

Form changing details:

  • Location: Same NPC in Jaune Sector 6
  • Cost: 500 Poké Dollars per trim change
  • Frequency: Change as often as you want (if you can afford it)
  • Duration: The trim is permanent until you change it again

The Cost of Completionism

Here’s the math if you want all nine forms in your collection:

  • Catch 9 Furfrou (you already did this, right?)
  • Pay 500 PokéDollars × 9 trims = 4,500 PokéDollars total
  • Store them in your boxes to admire your poodle collection

That’s actually pretty affordable compared to some other money sinks in the game. For reference, the Master Ball costs significantly more if you’re buying items from certain vendors.

Why Furfrou Forms Matter (Or Don’t)

Let’s be honest: Furfrou isn’t going to make anyone’s strongest Pokemon tier list. It’s a Normal-type with decent but unspectacular stats, and it doesn’t even get a Mega Evolution to compensate.

So why bother with this questline?

  1. Dex completion – Collectors will want all forms registered
  2. Fashion statements – If you’re using Furfrou in your team, might as well make it look fabulous
  3. The questline is charming – Helping someone achieve their dreams is wholesome content
  4. Regional flavor – Furfrou is basically the mascot of Kalos/Lumiose fashion culture

Think of Furfrou like Eevee and its evolutions—it’s more about the collection and aesthetic than competitive viability. And unlike Eevee evolutions, you can change Furfrou’s form whenever you want without committing to a permanent evolution.

Tips for Furfrou Collectors

Before you start the questline:

  • Catch at least 9 Furfrou if you want one of each form
  • Consider catching an Alpha Furfrou for the size difference
  • Stock up on Poké Dollars (you’ll need 4,500+ for all forms)

During the questline:

  • Don’t worry if you don’t have the required Pokemon immediately—the quests stay available
  • The Substitute Doll is harmless, so you can practice moves freely
  • Take screenshots of your favorite Furfrou forms for memories

After completing everything:

  • Organize your Furfrou collection in a dedicated box
  • Maybe nickname them based on their trims?
  • Show them off in online battles for style points

Final Thoughts: Pokemon Fashion Show

The Furfrou trimming questline is one of those delightful side activities that reminds you Pokemon games are about more than just competitive battling and speed stats. Sometimes it’s okay to spend an hour trimming digital poodles into elaborate hairstyles.

Is Furfrou competitively viable? Not really. Will it help you defeat Rogue Mega Pokemon? Probably not. But will it make you smile when you see your team of nine fancy dogs all sporting different outrageous hairdos? Absolutely.

Plus, helping that NPC achieve her dream of becoming a master trimmer is genuinely heartwarming. Game Freak knows how to write wholesome side content when they want to.
