Pokemon Starbucks Japan Collaboration Launches September 30 — Pikachu Latte and 41 Merch Items

    Pokemon Starbucks Japan Collaboration Launches

    Key Takeaways

    • Pokemon and Starbucks Japan are launching a limited collaboration on September 30, 2026, featuring a special drink and 41 merchandise items.
    • The star of the collab is the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte — an iced espresso with honey, caramel, and yellow-tinted whipped cream with heart-shaped toppings mimicking Pikachu’s red cheeks.
    • The drink was designed by Starbucks barista Junko Nitta, winner of an internal Barista Battle that received over 700 recipe submissions from across Japan.
    • The merchandise line features original artwork by illustrator Hikaru Ichijo, including mugs, tumblers, tote bags, aprons, keychains, and coffee-making tools — priced from around 1,500 yen (~$9) to 5,800 yen (~$36).
    • In-store purchases are limited to one per customer and end October 2; the drink promotion runs until October 8. The merch is also available on Starbucks Japan’s website.
    • The collaboration is currently Japan-exclusive with no confirmed Western expansion.

If you’re a Pokemon fan and a coffee person, this one’s going to hurt a little — because Starbucks Japan just announced one of the most charming Pokemon collabs of the year, and it’s locked behind a flight to Tokyo. The Pokemon x Starbucks Japan collaboration officially kicks off on September 30, 2026, and honestly, the lineup looks like something straight out of a Pokemon Center fever dream. A Pikachu-themed latte, 41 pieces of merchandise, original artwork from a commissioned illustrator — this is not a lazy cash-in. Let’s break it all down.

The Pikachu Honey Cream Latte — How It Was Made

The headline drink is the Pikachu Honey Cream Latte, and the story behind it is genuinely cool. Starbucks held an internal event called the Pokemon + Starbucks Barista Battle, inviting employees from locations across Japan to submit their best Pokemon-themed beverage recipes. Over 700 entries came in. Six finalists were selected to develop their concepts further, and the winner — Junko Nitta from the Koriyama Asaka store in Fukushima — gets to see her recipe sold nationwide.

The drink itself is an iced espresso built around honey and caramel, giving it a warm yellow color that echoes Pikachu’s signature look. On top sits honey-flavored whipped cream — also tinted yellow — and red heart-shaped sugar pieces that mimic Pikachu’s rosy cheeks. There are also chocolate drizzle details that call back to the dark markings on Pikachu’s tail and ears. It’s the kind of drink that looks incredible in photos and tastes like something a barista actually put thought into, not just a random seasonal menu item slapped together for clicks.

The Pikachu Honey Cream Latte is priced at 690 yen (roughly $4.34 USD). Every customer who orders it will also receive a limited-edition Starbucks x Pokemon collaboration sticker while supplies last. The drink is available exclusively at Starbucks Japan store locations and the promotion is expected to run until October 8, 2026, though an official end date hasn’t been formally confirmed by Starbucks.

41 Items of Pokemon Merchandise — What’s Available

Beyond the drink, this collaboration is absolutely stacked on the merch side. There are 41 different items in the lineup, all featuring original artwork created specifically for this campaign by illustrator Hikaru Ichijo. The artwork is organized under two themes: “Coffee Connection” and “Coffee Adventure”, and the designs show Pikachu, Eevee, and the Kanto Gen 1 starters — Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle — in cozy, coffee-shop-inspired everyday scenarios. It’s the kind of wholesome aesthetic that basically prints money in Japan.

The merchandise range covers a lot of ground. Here’s a look at what’s included:

    • Drinkware: Stainless steel tumblers, insulated cups, stacking mugs, heat-resistant cups, and glass cold cups
    • Accessories: Tote bags, aprons (the Coffee Connection utility apron runs around 4,800 yen / ~$30), keychains, postcards, and stickers
    • Coffee tools: Items designed for home coffee-making, which is a nice touch for the more serious coffee enthusiasts in the Pokemon fan base

Prices for the merchandise range from around 1,500 yen (~$9.44 USD) for smaller items up to 5,800 yen (~$36.51 USD) for premium pieces like tumblers and stainless cups. Not every item features both artwork themes — some pieces are exclusive to either Coffee Connection or Coffee Adventure designs, so if you’re hunting for a specific look, you’ll want to check the full catalog on Starbucks Japan’s website before ordering.

Purchase Limits — Pokemon Fighting Scalpers Again

One of the more notable aspects of this collaboration is how aggressively the purchase limits have been set up. On the first day the merchandise goes live online, customers are restricted to one of each item per account. In-store, the same one-per-customer rule applies, and physical store sales are set to end on October 2 — just two days after launch.

This kind of strict limiting isn’t surprising given what The Pokemon Company has been dealing with throughout 2026. Scalping has been a recurring headache for Pokemon merchandise and TCG drops all year, and the company has taken increasingly firm steps to try to keep product in the hands of actual fans rather than resellers flipping items for double or triple retail on secondary markets. Whether the limits are enough to actually prevent that from happening is another question entirely, but at least the intent is clear.

How to Get the Merchandise Outside Japan

The bad news for international fans: the collaboration is Japan-exclusive. The Pikachu Honey Cream Latte is only available in-store at Starbucks Japan locations, full stop. There’s no workaround for that one unless you happen to be in Japan before October 8.

The merchandise, however, is a different story. Reports from Nintendo Wire suggest there don’t appear to be international shipping restrictions on Starbucks Japan’s online store, which means importing the goods directly is at least a possibility. The drink vouchers included with some items almost certainly won’t be redeemable outside Japan, but if you’re primarily after the physical goods, the website route is worth checking out. Just be ready to move fast — given the purchase limits and the overall demand, popular items will likely go quickly on launch day.

This Isn’t the First Pokemon x Starbucks Collab

While this is a pretty unique collab in terms of its scope and the exclusivity of the merchandise, it’s not the first time the two brands have worked together. The most notable previous crossover in the West came when Starbucks partnered with Pokemon GO, adding special in-app PokeStops and Gyms at Starbucks locations across the United States. That was more of a digital integration than a physical merchandise drop, but it showed that the relationship between the two brands has been percolating (pun fully intended) for a while now.

Given that Starbucks operates in dozens of countries globally, there’s always a chance this collab could expand at some point — but as of right now, Pokemon hasn’t confirmed any plans to bring the campaign beyond Japan’s borders.

Where This Fits in Pokemon’s Massive 2026 30th Anniversary Celebrations

This Starbucks collab is just the latest in a genuinely wild year of Pokemon partnerships. 2026 marks the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and The Pokemon Company has been releasing collaborations at a pace that’s hard to keep track of. Earlier this year, fans got Pokemon’s first-ever LEGO sets featuring Pikachu, Eevee, Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise. There was an Adidas Originals collection, a Krispy Kreme baked goods line, and a massive Target partnership in the US that launched in two waves in May and June. McDonald’s joined the party too with a 30th anniversary Happy Meal series featuring limited TCG cards.

Some of the bigger celebrations, though, have stayed Japan-exclusive — like the ANA Airways planes decked out in Pokemon livery, and the upcoming multi-region artbooks planned for December 2026. The Starbucks collab falls into that Japan-first camp, at least for now.

For North American fans who feel left out, there’s still something coming up locally. On September 27, Target is hosting another Pokemon event at select stores, featuring limited goods, a Pokemon TCG card-drawing activity, and a chance to try out Pokemon Pokopia. The event runs for just four hours per location, so if you’re planning to attend, arrive early.

With the 30th anniversary still in full swing and more celebrations reportedly in the pipeline, there’s a very good chance this won’t be the last major Pokemon collab before the year wraps up. If you’re a collector, 2026 has been both an exciting and expensive time to be a Pokemon fan.
