Jill Valentine Returns in Resident Evil: Death Island Manga — Release Date, Story and What’s Next for RE

    By Mark Smith · August 22, 2026 · 8 min read
Jill Valentine Returns in Resident Evil

It’s been six years since Jill Valentine appeared in a new Resident Evil release — and if you’ve been feeling that absence, you’re not alone. The good news is that the wait is nearly over, at least in one format. Resident Evil: Death Island Vol. 1, a manga adaptation of the 2023 CGI animated film, is landing on September 29, 2026 from Titan Manga — and it brings back Jill alongside the rest of the franchise’s most beloved cast in one packed story.

It’s not a new game. But for fans who love these characters and have been waiting for literally anything featuring Jill Valentine since the Resident Evil 3 Remake back in 2020, this is genuinely something to get excited about.

What Is Resident Evil: Death Island?

If you missed the original 2023 film, here’s the setup. Resident Evil: Death Island is set in the same canonical universe as the video games — not the live-action movie continuity, but the actual RE game world — and it brings together arguably the most stacked cast of franchise favourites ever assembled in a single project.

The story kicks off with Leon S. Kennedy on a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist, while Chris Redfield investigates a mysterious T-virus outbreak spreading through San Francisco. The two investigations eventually converge on Alcatraz Island, where the former federal prison has become the epicentre of a new bioterror crisis. Alongside Leon and Chris, the film features Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers all fighting for survival together — making it one of the only projects in the franchise’s history to unite characters from the first two games in a single story.

The film was produced by Quebico and TMS Entertainment, directed by Eiichiro Hasumi, and written by Makoto Fukami. It was well-received by fans of the animated RE films, praised for its action set pieces and the novelty of having this many iconic characters share screen time.

The Manga: What’s Different, and Who Made It?

The manga adaptation was originally serialized in Japan on Kadokawa’s digital Comic Hu platform from May 2023 to March 2024, illustrated by manga artist Zino (also credited as ZINO Kodakujii). The collected volume released in Japan in April 2024. Titan Manga is now bringing the complete English-language edition to Western audiences for the first time.

The adaptation isn’t just a straight panel-for-panel retelling of the film. Early reviews of the Japanese release noted that the manga gives certain characters — Jill in particular — even more room to shine than the film did, with some scenes expanded and recontextualised in ways that actually complement the source material rather than just compressing it. Zino’s artwork has been described as high-octane and cinematic, with detailed action sequences and strong character expressions that translate the film’s visual scale surprisingly well to the page.

The finished English volume runs 224 pages in black and white, costs $12.99, and is available now for pre-order through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Forbidden Planet. Physical copies hit bookstores and comic shops on September 29.

It’s also worth noting that the timing couldn’t be much better from a Resident Evil content perspective. Resident Evil: Extinction, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Resident Evil: Retribution, Resident Evil: Damnation, Resident Evil: Vendetta, and Resident Evil: Death Island will all be available for streaming on Netflix beginning September 1, 2026 — so if you want to watch the film before diving into the manga, that option is right there. You’ve got nearly a month between the Netflix drop and the manga’s release to do exactly that.

    Why Jill Valentine’s Return Matters

Jill has been part of the Resident Evil DNA since the very beginning. She was one of two playable characters in the original 1996 game, starred in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, featured in the 2002 REmake of the first game, played a major story role in Resident Evil 5, and came back for the Resident Evil 3 Remake in 2020. She has also appeared in Resident Evil: Resistance — the asymmetrical multiplayer game that shipped alongside the RE3 Remake — and in various spin-offs, crossovers, and the live-action film series.

Then she went quiet. The last game she was in, Resident Evil Re:Verse, shut down in June 2025, and it wasn’t exactly a fitting send-off — the game was poorly received from the start. That makes her last proper appearance the RE3 Remake, now six years in the rearview mirror.

In the Death Island manga, Jill reportedly gets some of her best moments in any animated RE property. Given how much the character means to the franchise, any new content featuring her — even in manga form — is worth paying attention to. The cast assembled here (Jill, Leon, Chris, Claire, Rebecca) represents the original generation of Resident Evil survivors, and seeing them share pages together is a treat regardless of format.

When Will Jill Be Back in a Game?

This is the question most RE fans are really asking, and the answer is: not soon, and we don’t know exactly when. Here’s the current state of Capcom’s Resident Evil pipeline as best we know it.

Resident Evil Veronica — the remake of the 2000 Dreamcast classic Code: Veronica — was officially announced at Summer Game Fest 2026 and is confirmed for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The remake follows Claire Redfield, who travels to Paris to find her brother Chris, before the story expands to Rockfort Island and an Umbrella research facility in Antarctica. Jill doesn’t appear in the original Code: Veronica’s main story, so unless Capcom makes significant additions to the source material, she’s unlikely to feature here.

After Veronica, the community rumour mill points toward a Resident Evil Zero remake as the likely next project, presumably targeting around 2028. Zero starred Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen — no Jill there either, except as a possible background presence during the game’s opening hours, which overlap with the events of the original RE1.

The most realistic scenarios for a Jill return in a video game are either Resident Evil 10 — rumoured to be in development, with no release window — or a second remake of the original Resident Evil game, which has also been suggested in leak circles. The original game, which starred both Chris and Jill as its two playable protagonists, was already remade in 2002. A second remake using the RE Engine that has powered the recent remake trilogy would be a massive undertaking — but it would guarantee Jill’s return to the mainline series in a serious way.

The honest summary is that Jill Valentine fans are probably looking at at least two or three years before she appears in a major video game again. The Death Island manga is the best thing available right now, and it’s genuinely worth picking up on those merits.

The Bigger Resident Evil Picture Right Now

It’s actually a solid time to be a Resident Evil fan despite the Jill-shaped hole in the current game lineup. Resident Evil Requiem launched in February 2026 as the ninth mainline entry and was well received. The RE Veronica remake announcement was one of the cleanest hype moments of Summer Game Fest 2026. And with both the manga and multiple films hitting Netflix in September, there’s a lot of content to sink into before the next game arrives.

The September 18 live-action Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger also lands just before the manga, offering a second reboot of the film continuity set loosely around the events of RE2. It won’t feature Jill Valentine in its main cast, but it’s adding to the franchise’s cultural footprint at a moment when multiple Resident Evil projects are competing for attention simultaneously.

For fans keeping track of everything dropping in that late September window, there’s a lot of gaming and gaming-adjacent media landing around the same time. If you’re navigating a busy release calendar, The Blood of Dawnwalker hits September 3, and the broader context of what’s happening in gaming publishing right now is worth keeping an eye on through the Double Fine situation and the general industry churn of late 2026.

    The Bottom Line

Resident Evil: Death Island Vol. 1 drops September 29, 2026 from Titan Manga for $12.99. It’s 224 pages of Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers fighting through an Alcatraz bioterror nightmare, adapted by a manga artist who reportedly did the source material justice and then some.

It’s not a new game — but it’s the best we’ve got right now, and honestly? Based on what the early reception to the Japanese edition suggests, it might be enough. Pre-order it. Watch the film on Netflix first if you haven’t seen it. And then wait for Capcom to eventually announce whatever brings Jill Valentine back to the video game world properly.
