Sony Is Offering Up to $400 Cash for Your PS5 and Two Controllers in a Direct Trade-In Deal

Sony Is Offering Up to $400 Cash for Your PS5
    • Sony is sending push notifications through the PlayStation app offering up to $400 cash directly to your bank account for a standard PS5 and two controllers.
    • This is unusual — platform holders don’t typically reach out directly to customers with trade-in offers like this.
    • Standard PS5 consoles currently retail between $600 and $650, making this a solid return on a console that originally launched at $500.
    • The PS5 Pro is even harder to find at retail right now, with GameStop and third-party resellers listing used units for as much as $1,400 ahead of GTA 6.
    • Sony may be building pre-owned stock to sell at more accessible prices, or preparing for a hardware supply squeeze heading into the holidays.

So Sony is doing something a bit unusual right now. If you’ve got a PS5 sitting in your entertainment unit collecting dust, the company is apparently willing to put $400 straight into your bank account for it — and they’re the ones reaching out to you first. That’s not how this normally works.

    What’s the Deal, Exactly?

As spotted by ResetEra users, PlayStation has been pushing notifications through the official PlayStation mobile app to certain users. The message is pretty straightforward: trade in your PS5 console and two controllers, and Sony will send the money directly to your bank account. The offer tops out at $400 for a standard PS5 with two DualSense controllers.

Trade-in promotions around the holiday season aren’t new — retailers like GameStop run them all the time. What makes this stand out is that it’s coming directly from Sony themselves, targeting individual customers through their own app. That’s a move you don’t see from platform holders very often.

    Why Is Sony Doing This?

Nobody’s said officially, but it doesn’t take a lot of reading between the lines to figure out what might be going on here.

Standard PS5 consoles are currently sitting at $600 to $650 at retail, depending on whether you’re picking up the disc or digital version. That’s a significant jump from the original $500 launch price, partly driven by Sony’s price hikes earlier this year. If Sony can acquire used units directly and resell them as certified pre-owned hardware at a lower price point than new, they can serve a segment of the market that’s priced out of the current retail cost — while also putting that hardware back into circulation rather than leaving it on people’s shelves.

The other angle is supply. The PS5 Pro shortage ahead of GTA 6 has been genuinely rough. The console has been sold out at Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, Target, and PlayStation Direct since September, with Sony’s own internal communications reportedly acknowledging that the shortage could stretch into early 2027. GTA 6 is a massive hardware driver and there’s serious demand for premium hardware going into November 19. If Sony is light on new units, having refurbished stock in the pipeline gives them options.

Is $400 Actually a Good Deal?

Honestly, it’s not bad. When the PS5 launched it retailed at $500. If you bought one at launch and haven’t touched it in a while — or picked up a second unit somewhere along the way — getting $400 back for it plus an extra controller you probably have lying around is a decent return. At this point in a console generation, GameStop has historically offered significantly less than that for trade-ins on older hardware, so Sony’s offer is competitive.

The important caveat is that this is for a standard PS5, not the Pro. The PS5 Pro is a different beast entirely right now. With the console basically impossible to find at retail price, resellers and even major retailers are charging well over that — with GTA 6 launching on November 19, demand has pushed used PS5 Pro prices to as high as $1,400 at GameStop and on third-party platforms. If you happen to have a Pro and were thinking of flipping it, the private market is probably a better avenue right now than any official trade-in.

For a standard PS5 though? If you genuinely don’t use it and you’ve got two controllers, $400 to your bank account with no effort is not a terrible proposition.

The Bigger Picture: Console Prices and the GTA 6 Effect

The timing of all of this is interesting. Sony raised PS5 prices in April 2026, citing global economic conditions and component costs — specifically the ongoing memory chip shortage that’s been hitting hardware manufacturers hard. The base PS5 went from $500 to $600 overnight, the Pro went from $699 to $899, and the whole situation pushed a chunk of the market to look at secondhand units as a more affordable path in.

GTA 6 has poured fuel on that fire. The game is one of the biggest entertainment launches ever and it’s console exclusive at launch — no PC version confirmed. Players who don’t have a PS5 or Xbox Series X and S yet are suddenly very motivated to get one before November 19. That demand spike is exactly why the PS5 Pro is in short supply and why resellers are having a field day right now.

Sony getting used units back through direct trade-ins — at a controlled price point, into their own refurbishment pipeline — makes a lot of sense in this environment. They control the quality of what comes back, they set the resale price, and they capture margin that would otherwise go to GameStop or eBay flippers.

If you’ve got a PS5 you don’t use and the PlayStation app on your phone, it’s worth checking whether you’ve received this offer. And if you’re on the other side of this equation and still trying to get your hands on hardware before GTA 6 drops, make sure you’ve got your GTA 6 preload queued up and storage cleared — 212 GB is not a small ask on a drive that might already be near capacity.

Either way, things are moving fast in the console market right now. The next few weeks before launch are going to be wild.
