Square Enix Accuses Front Mission Developer of Stealing Assets for Its Own Game

Square Enix has taken legal action against BlackJack Studio, accusing the developer of stealing assets from their canceled Front Mission 2089: Borderscape project and using them in its new mecha strategy game, Mecharashi.

Square Enix and BlackJack Studio’s Fallout

BlackJack Studio was originally developing Front Mission 2089: Borderscape, a revival of Square Enix’s classic mecha battle franchise. However, after two years of development, Square Enix canceled the project in October 2024 for unknown reasons and cut ties with the studio.

Shortly after, BlackJack Studio announced Mecharashi, a turn-based tactical mecha game that closely resembled Front Mission.

According to court documents (uncovered by Polygon), Square Enix claims BlackJack Studio reused assets, mechanics, and designs from Front Mission 2089: Borderscape for Mecharashi.

Even the Steam description of Mecharashi directly compared itself to Front Mission:

“Mecharashi is a mecha-themed tactical turn-based game. The game adopts a Front Mission-style combat system, where you can assemble mechas however you want, equip a wide selection of weapons, and choose your favorite pilots to engage in battle.”

Square Enix’s lawsuit includes side-by-side screenshots comparing assets from the unreleased Front Mission prototype to Mecharashi, showing clear similarities in design, mechanics, and UI.

What Square Enix Wants

Square Enix is demanding:

  • $150,000 (£115,000) in compensation for copyright infringement.
  • An immediate takedown of Mecharashi from digital storefronts.

The Battle Over Mecharashi’s Steam Listing

In response to Square Enix’s DMCA claim, Mecharashi was removed from Steam but has since reappeared, indicating an ongoing legal dispute.

As Square Enix and BlackJack Studio continue their legal battle, the future of Mecharashi remains uncertain. Fans of the Front Mission series will have to wait and see whether Square Enix takes further action or if BlackJack Studio will be forced to make major changes to its game.
