Okay so if you’ve ever screamed at your best friend over a burning pizza in Overcooked, good news — the team behind that glorious chaos is back, and they’re cooking up something completely different. Ghost Town Games just dropped the first real gameplay look at Stage Fright, their adorably spooky co-op adventure that’s been quietly baking in the oven for about five years now. Published by Hello Games (yes, the No Man’s Sky people), this one is heading our way in Spring 2027, and honestly it might be the most exciting co-op game on the horizon right now.

What Is Stage Fright, and Why Should You Care?

Here’s the short version: imagine Overcooked, but instead of a frantic kitchen, you’re thrown into a spooky mystery town with escape rooms, strange creatures, and an ancient mystery to unravel. That’s Stage Fright in a nutshell. Ghost Town Games — a tiny studio of just three core people — has been working on this thing since around 2021, and the fact that it’s been five years in development tells you everything about how seriously they’re taking it.

The game follows three kids named Drew, Blake, and Charlie as they try to solve a mystery surrounding a very weird town full of very odd characters. The studio isn’t giving away much about the actual plot yet, but the vibe is very clear: think The Goonies, think Stranger Things, think kids in way over their heads doing the most. Ghost Town Games has explicitly cited those as creative touchstones, alongside Luigi’s Mansion as a gameplay inspiration, and honestly you can feel all of those influences just from the new footage.

This is also a long-form adventure, not a score-attack level grinder. Where Overcooked had you racing against the clock every single level, Stage Fright lets you breathe and sink into a mystery. That’s a pretty bold direction change for a studio whose whole identity was built around urgency and panic — and it sounds like exactly the right call.

How Does the Co-Op Actually Work?

Stage Fright is built as a strict two-player experience — online or couch co-op — which is interesting given that you’ve got three protagonists to play through. The way Ghost Town Games handles that is clever: you switch between different pairs of kids as the story progresses, with the whole mystery unfolding from two separate perspectives. So you’re not just playing one linear story — you’re piecing together what happened from two different angles, which sounds like it could get really interesting narratively.

The communication-first design philosophy is carrying over hard from Overcooked’s DNA. The studio wants you and your co-op partner talking, working things out, and using your combined brain power to get through the escape room-style puzzles. It’s specifically designed so that the challenge lives in the puzzle, not the controller. Ghost Town Games have said outright that they want to protect the accessibility they built into Overcooked — where anyone can pick it up regardless of gaming experience — and resist the temptation to add complex button inputs that would shut players out.

That’s a design value you don’t see studios stick to very often, and it’s one of the reasons Overcooked became such a massive crossover hit. Couch co-op games that genuinely work for people who don’t play games all the time are rare. Stage Fright sounds like it’s doubling down on that.

The Escape Room Meets Chaos Formula

So if it’s not a frantic kitchen game, what is it exactly? Based on the new gameplay, Stage Fright blends two flavours of co-op that don’t usually sit together. On one hand you’ve got the deliberate, communicative puzzle-solving side — proper escape room stuff where you’re reading the environment, sharing information, and working through multi-step solutions together. On the other hand, Ghost Town Games hasn’t completely abandoned the chaotic energy that made Overcooked famous. There are more frantic moments mixed in where things get unpredictable and a bit madcap.

The studio describes it as players needing to sometimes put themselves in danger to save their partner — which is a very Overcooked thing to say, and sounds brilliant. That balance between thoughtful puzzle-solving and sudden bursts of beautiful chaos is what makes the concept work. It’s not just an escape room game. It’s not just an action co-op game. It’s something in between, and that’s a gap in the market nobody has really filled.

    • Escape room-style puzzles — multi-step problems that require both players to share what they’re seeing and coordinate solutions
    • Chaotic action moments — sudden situations that demand quick reactions and teamwork under pressure
    • Environmental exploration — a mysterious town full of strange characters to interact with and secrets to uncover
    • Dual-perspective storytelling — the mystery plays out differently depending on which pair of characters you’re controlling

Ghost Town Games’ Vision: A Bigger Adventure Beyond the Kitchen

One of the most interesting things about Stage Fright is how intentionally Ghost Town Games has thought about what it means to make a “post-Overcooked” game without just making another Overcooked. The studio has talked openly about wanting to take their players out of the kitchen and into a larger, more involving saga — something with more room to breathe, more story to chew on, and characters you actually get attached to.

The accessibility angle is genuinely important here too. Overcooked was one of those rare games that worked just as well for hardcore gamers as it did for someone who hadn’t touched a controller since they were a kid. That approachability was never accidental — it was a deliberate design value that Ghost Town Games fought to maintain. With Stage Fright, they’re applying that same thinking to a completely different genre, which is either very brave or very smart. Probably both.

Five years of development from a three-person core team also tells you how much care has gone into this thing. These aren’t people churning out a quick follow-up to cash in on Overcooked’s reputation. This is a studio that genuinely wanted to build something meaningful with the goodwill they’d earned.

Hello Games Publishing — and What That Means

The fact that this is being published by Hello Games is genuinely fascinating and not something you see coming until it happened. Hello Games is the studio behind No Man’s Sky — a game that famously had one of the roughest launches in recent memory and then, through years of free updates and sheer determination, became one of the best redemption stories in gaming. They know something about taking the long view on a project, and they clearly see something special in Stage Fright.

Hello Games’ Tim Woodley described getting the same feeling from Stage Fright’s early demos that they got from the very first Overcooked prototype — that immediate, undeniable sense that something special is happening. That kind of endorsement from people who helped shaped the modern co-op gaming conversation carries some real weight.

This is also Hello Games’ first major publishing venture for another studio’s game, which makes Stage Fright an important moment for them too. They’re not just slapping their name on something — they’re genuinely invested in this as a creative partnership between two small studios who both have something to prove and something to say.

    Platforms and Release Window

Right now, the confirmed platform is PC via Steam, and the game was also featured during the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, with a multi-platform launch that includes Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in the mix. If you want to wishlist it now, it’s already up on Steam. Ghost Town Games hasn’t fully locked down all platforms publicly beyond that, so there may be more announcements down the line.

The release window is Spring 2027, which puts it in a similar landing zone to some other big titles next year. It’s worth noting that it showed up in the same Nintendo Direct where Kirby and the World Beyond was announced for Spring 2027 — so 2027 is shaping up to be a really loaded year for co-op and adventure game fans in general.

Is This the Next Great Couch Co-Op Game?

Honestly? The signs are all there. You’ve got a studio that already proved once they could make a co-op experience so good it practically defines the genre. You’ve got a publisher in Hello Games that has earned serious credibility for supporting creative risks. You’ve got a concept — spooky escape room adventure with Overcooked’s chaos DNA — that fills a genuine gap in the co-op market. And you’ve got five years of development investment behind it.

The couch co-op space has always been a bit underserved in terms of games that genuinely appeal to both hardcore players and total newcomers at the same time. Overcooked basically built a franchise out of solving that problem for one genre. Stage Fright looks like it’s trying to do the same thing for a completely different type of game — which, if it pulls it off, could be just as big a deal.

Spring 2027 can’t come soon enough. If you’re the kind of person who has a dedicated gaming buddy and loves the idea of a mystery that requires actual communication to solve, put this one on your radar right now. While you wait, there’s plenty keeping the co-op scene busy — check out what’s happening in the MMO space with FFXIV Patch 7.56 and the Beastmaster update, or dive into something completely solo with the OSRS A Ruff Situation quest if Old School RuneScape is more your speed.
