GSC Game World has officially revealed the first major story expansion for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Announced during the Xbox Partner Preview on March 26, Cost of Hope is set to release in Summer 2026 across Xbox Series X/S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and PlayStation 5.
What Is Cost of Hope?
Cost of Hope isn’t a side mission pack or a cosmetic bundle — it’s a full, story-driven expansion that GSC is positioning as a significant chapter in the continuing Stalker saga. The DLC follows Skif, the protagonist of the base game, through events that run parallel to the main storyline of Heart of Chornobyl.
The integration is clever. Once installed, your in-game PDA will serve notifications prompting you to access the DLC content as the main story progresses. That means you won’t need a completely separate playthrough to experience it — though GSC has advised players to consider starting a fresh save file before the expansion launches to get the full intended experience from the beginning.
According to GSC’s official press release, Cost of Hope will contain dozens of hours of gameplay, making it a genuinely substantial addition to an already massive game.
Two New Regions — Including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The headline draw is the locations. Cost of Hope introduces two brand new regions to the Zone, and one of them is the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant — a landmark that has loomed over the entire Stalker universe since the very first game. For anyone who has spent countless hours in the Zone wondering what horrors lurk inside that infamous structure, this expansion finally delivers the answer.
Alongside the Power Plant, players will explore additional uncharted territory packed with new hubs, side quests, and hidden locations. New weapons and gear are also part of the package, giving both returning veterans and newer players fresh tools to work with across the expanded Zone.
A Conflict at the Heart of the Zone
The expansion’s story centers on the long-standing conflict between two of the Zone’s most iconic factions — Duty and Freedom. These two groups have clashed ideologically since the original Stalker games, with fundamentally opposing views on what the Zone represents and what humanity’s relationship with it should be. Cost of Hope puts that tension front and center, using it as the backbone of the new narrative arc.
Stalker 2’s Ongoing Evolution
It’s worth appreciating just how much Stalker 2 has grown since its November 2024 launch. The game arrived after a development cycle severely disrupted by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and GSC Game World has continued building and expanding it under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
Since launch, the studio has pushed out numerous significant updates — including major improvements to the A-Life AI system that governs dynamic NPC behavior across the Zone. A full PlayStation 5 version followed, then the large free Stories Untold DLC landed in December 2025. Cost of Hope is the next step, and by the sound of it, the biggest one yet.
Stalker 2 also recently received Xbox Play Anywhere support, meaning a single purchase covers Xbox Series X/S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and supported handhelds — with save progress transferring seamlessly between all of them.
What to Expect on Pricing and Timing
A specific release date within the Summer 2026 window hasn’t been announced yet. Players who picked up the Ultimate Edition of Stalker 2 at launch — which included a Season Pass covering two story expansions — already have Cost of Hope included in their purchase.
If you’re looking at what else is coming to Xbox this summer, it’s shaping up to be a genuinely strong stretch for the platform.
