Star Wars: KOTOR’s Messy Remake Still Happening, Says Studio

It’s been almost a year since we last heard anything about the long-awaited (and kinda cursed) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. But even with the radio silence, Saber Interactive insists, “Everything that we have talked about is still in development.”

The KOTOR remake was first announced for PlayStation 5 and PC back in 2021, with Aspyr originally leading the charge. But since then, things haven’t exactly gone smoothly. In 2022, reports started floating around that the project was in serious trouble and had been delayed indefinitely. Not exactly what fans wanted to hear.

Not long after that, it was confirmed that Warhammer 40K: Space Marine dev Saber Interactive had taken over. But even after that shift, there was still nothing new to show, and in 2023, rumors popped up again claiming the game was basically dead. Those were shut down pretty quickly, but people started questioning the project’s future once more when Saber split from its parent company, Embracer Group, last year.

The last real update came in April 2023, when Saber’s boss, Matthew Karch, said the remake was “alive and well.” But since then? Crickets. Fans started worrying again. Then this week, Saber gave a little reassurance.

After announcing development had started on Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 3, Saber’s chief creative officer, Tim Willits, went on social media to calm everyone down. “Saber Interactive is one of the largest independent developers in the world,” he wrote. “We are working on numerous games across many different genres. Everything that we have talked about is still in development. We will share information on upcoming games when we have something cool to share.”

So yeah, the KOTOR remake isn’t officially dead—but it’s still in limbo. And honestly, it’s just one of many projects Saber’s juggling right now. The studio is also working on John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando and Jurassic Park Survival, both expected this year, plus a new Turok game and something for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

As for Space Marine 3, that one seems like it’s still a long way off. Saber has said it’ll be supporting Space Marine 2 for years while they work on the sequel, which they claim will be “even more immersive.”

For now, fans will just have to keep waiting (and hoping) that KOTOR actually makes it out of development hell.
