The Sims 1 & 2 Legacy Collections Get a Major Bug-Fixing Patch

EA has released a new patch for The Sims 1 & 2 Legacy Collections, fixing crashes, graphical issues, and DirectX errors. Check out the full list of fixes and updates!

The Sims 1 & 2 Legacy Collections Get a Big Update to Fix Major Issues

The Sims community was thrilled when EA teased the return of older Sims games ahead of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. For years, getting The Sims 1 and The Sims 2 to run on modern hardware had been a challenge, so the official re-release was a dream come true for many fans.

However, the excitement quickly faded when players ran into a series of frustrating issues, from frequent crashes to the dreaded DirectX 9.0c error. Fortunately, EA has responded with a new patch aimed at fixing many of these problems.

The Sims 1 & 2 Re-Release – February 4 Patch Notes

Some of the biggest complaints included crashing after creating a family and the game failing to launch unless set to windowed mode. These, along with several other common issues, have now been addressed.

The Sims 1 – Fixed Issues:

  • Alt+Tab or Alt+Enter no longer causes crashes.
  • Windowed mode and full-screen mode should now toggle properly.
  • Some systems previously launched the game but immediately exited—this should now be fixed.
  • Clicking on parts of the neighborhood map is now functional.
  • The travel screen (when switching neighborhoods) should no longer appear glitched.
  • Crashes related to non-default neighborhoods have been resolved.
  • The HUD no longer gets clipped when cycling window and zoom sizes.

The Sims 1 – General Notes:

  • Many graphics-related issues (missing walls, floors, or objects) can be fixed by updating graphics drivers.
  • Moving the game window to a monitor with a lower resolution may still cause crashes—use “-monitor” to prevent this.
  • Music may only play in Live Mode if sound settings aren’t configured correctly—double-check speaker setup.
  • The game may repeatedly ask to “Enable the help system” unless the tutorial is fully completed.

The Sims 2 – Fixed Issues:

  • Alt+Tab and Alt+Enter should no longer cause crashes.
  • Players on the EA App should no longer get corrupt file errors.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred after creating a family.
  • The game should now launch at the correct resolution instead of scaling a small 800×600 window.
  • DirectX errors should no longer require launching in windowed mode as a workaround.
  • Sims disappearing after moving lots or neighborhoods has been addressed.
  • Non-adult Sims (children, pets) should no longer vanish unexpectedly.
  • Crashes linked to transferable rewards (like a dog returning from work) have been fixed.
  • Infinite loading screen issues have been addressed.

The Sims 2 – General Notes:

  • Many performance issues can be resolved by updating graphics drivers.
  • The “boolProp testingCheatsEnabled” cheat is working as intended, meaning periodic debug pop-ups are expected when activated.
  • Alien abduction cutscenes may fail if other Sims are on the lot—until a fix is released, ensure no other Sims are present when triggering the event.

More Fixes on the Way

EA has acknowledged that some issues may still persist and are actively being investigated.

“Some topics can require an extended investigation on our end, so even though these fixes may be in active review, it’s not a guarantee that we’ll have an immediate fix for it in the upcoming patch,” the developers said.

While there’s still work to be done, this update is a huge step forward in making The Sims 1 and The Sims 2 more stable and playable on modern systems. If you’ve been holding off due to bugs, now might be the perfect time to jump back in and relive the nostalgia!
