How Many Chapters Are in Valor Mortis?
Valor Mortis has 10 main chapters, each set in a distinct location. The game also has the Abandoned Church, which functions as a permanent hub area outside of the numbered chapter structure. That’s where you upgrade weapons and Transmutations, buy and sell items, and return between chapters.
The campaign is designed to take around 20 hours on a direct playthrough. Exploring optional areas, completing side quests, and tracking down all Ambers will push that figure noticeably higher.
Each chapter is a large, revisitable area rather than a straight corridor. You progress through it by activating Lanterns, pushing deeper, and eventually reaching and defeating the chapter’s boss. Some chapters have more Lanterns than others depending on their size and complexity.
Valor Mortis All Chapters — Full List in Order
Here is every chapter in Valor Mortis, with its main quest name, location, all Lanterns within it, and the boss encounter it leads to.
Chapter 1 — Revival (The Battlefield)
This is where Valor Mortis begins. William wakes up dead on a Napoleonic battlefield and immediately has to fight his way through the remnants of a corrupted French army. Chapter 1 is the game’s tutorial zone in all but name — it introduces combat basics, parrying, and your first Transmutation. Three Lanterns here.
- Onslaught Arch
- Trenches
- Field Encampment
The chapter ends with your first encounter with General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer — though the actual boss fight plays out in Chapter 2 in the full game. Think of this chapter as the game establishing its tone: brutal, atmospheric, and unforgiving from the first enemy.
Chapter 2 — Regroup (Valley of Ashes)
After surviving the battlefield, William pushes into the Valley of Ashes — a scarred and smoky stretch of ruined land where the plague’s spread is more obvious. This is one of the larger early chapters, with six Lanterns covering a lot of ground. The difficulty steps up noticeably here.
- Guidepost
- Demolished Path
- The Climb
- The Other Side
- Military Camp
- Quarry
Boss: General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer — a corrupted Grande Armée officer and the game’s first major boss fight. He has multiple phases and demands that you have parrying down before facing him. Expect to die here at least once.
Chapter 3 — Rendezvous (Fallen Village)
Defeating General Lothaire unlocks the Abandoned Church and with it, fast travel — one of the most important unlocks in the game. From this point you can warp between any activated Lantern. The Fallen Village itself is a plague-ravaged settlement full of corrupted townspeople and environmental hazards. Four Lanterns across this chapter.
- Fields
- Marketplace
- Orchard
- Path of Fire
Boss: The Iron Marshall — a heavily armoured commander-type enemy that demands patience. Breaking his posture through sustained parries is the key strategy here.
Chapter 4 — Dark Descent (Caverns)
The game goes underground. The Caverns are dark, claustrophobic, and full of enemies that use the confined geometry against you. First-person navigation gets genuinely tense here — you often can’t see threats coming from your flanks, which the encounter design leans into deliberately. Five Lanterns.
- Last Sunlight
- Weeping Ledge
- Old Mine
- Mine Cart Route
- Ancient Lair
Boss: Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy — a larger, creature-type boss that breaks from the humanoid pattern of the earlier fights. Shooting weak points is essential to managing the fight efficiently.
Chapter 5 — Crime (Vale of Wrath)
The Vale of Wrath is one of the more open chapters in the game — abandoned houses, wooded trails, military fortifications, and a fishing village give it more environmental variety than the Caverns. This chapter has several optional side quests including Lost Boy, In the Name of Art, and The Deserter. Five Lanterns, and some of the best Amber hunting in the early-to-mid game.
- Wolfsbane Field
- Under the Bridge
- Poisoned Camp
- Ship Graveyard
- Old Windmill
Boss: Slaughtermill — one of the more unusual boss designs in the game. The sentient windmill boss that reviewers mentioned. Exactly as memorable as it sounds.
Chapter 6 — Punishment (Cursed Hollow)
The Cursed Hollow is a waterlogged, fog-heavy region with a strong horror atmosphere. Silent cannons, deep water areas, and a village church make this one of the more visually distinct chapters. Four Lanterns.
- Eerie View
- Village Church
- Deep Water
- Silent Cannons
Boss: Anna, The Bride Drowned in Tears — a tragic and visually striking boss fight. Her moveset is erratic and emotionally charged, and learning her patterns takes time.
Chapter 7 — The Outskirts
Chapter 7 was one of the two chapters included in the Steam demo, giving players a preview of the mid-game difficulty curve before launch. The Outskirts spans a destroyed bridge, a lighthouse, a harbour, and scattered coastal settlements. At six Lanterns it’s one of the largest chapters in the game.
- Broken Bridge
- Breach
- Island of Whispers
- Market Square
- Lighthouse
- Harbour
Boss: High Justicar Aurelius, Last of the Faithful — described in walkthroughs as the parry exam. Aurelius stops attacking and starts reading — if your fundamentals are not in order by this point, he will expose every gap. He is widely regarded as one of the game’s most demanding fights.
Chapter 8 — City of Orphans
Urban combat enters the picture. The City of Orphans is a crumbling European city full of tight streets, sewers, and elevated positions where ranged enemies can pin you down. Three Lanterns — a shorter chapter but a dense one.
- Tribunal Square
- Shamble Street
- Sewers
Boss: Experiment 83 — a laboratory creation that makes the setting’s horror elements explicit. This fight leans into Transmutation use and weak point targeting more than most earlier bosses.
Chapter 9 — University
The University is a late-game location that mixes scholarly grandeur with plague-ridden decay. Laboratories, a lift shaft, and a sewage drain make for an eclectic and memorable environment. Four Lanterns.
- Main Hall
- Lift Shaft
- Laboratories
- Sewage Drain
Boss: The Orphan — a deeply unsettling fight that plays on the chapter’s themes. By this point the game’s difficulty has reached its highest sustained level — the Orphan will test everything you have built across the campaign.
Chapter 10 — Fortress
The final chapter and the most vertical location in the game. The Fortress rises from a main gate through ramparts, a courtyard, a chapel, and a high tower — six Lanterns spread across a large and punishing gauntlet. This is the endgame, and it shows.
- Main Gate
- Traverse
- Chapel
- Ramparts
- Courtyard
- High Tower
The Fortress contains two final boss encounters back to back:
Boss: Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris — a high-ranking member of the supernatural order behind the plague. A multi-phase fight that uses everything the game has taught you.
Boss: Entity, Voice of the Void — the final boss of Valor Mortis. No further details here to avoid spoilers, but bring your best loadout and a full stock of heals.
The Abandoned Church — Hub Area
The Abandoned Church sits outside the main chapter numbering and functions as the central hub of Valor Mortis. It unlocks after defeating General Lothaire at the end of Chapter 2. From here you can:
- Upgrade your weapons using Catalysts
- Upgrade your Transmutations
- Buy and sell items
- Fast travel to any activated Lantern in the game
The Church has its own Lantern — the Abandoned Church Lantern — which is your central respawn anchor during the mid-to-late game. Make a habit of visiting after every chapter boss to spend Catalysts and apply weapon upgrades before pushing into the next area.
The Entropy Lantern
One Lantern in Valor Mortis — named Entropy — becomes permanently inaccessible after a certain story point. If you care about visiting every location or ticking off fast travel points, make sure you have activated this Lantern before the game locks you out of it. The exact trigger is tied to late-game story progression in the Fortress chapter.
All Bosses in Valor Mortis — In Order
There are 10 main story bosses in Valor Mortis. There are no optional bosses and no post-game superbosses. There are mini-bosses in the form of elite Eternal Guardsman encounters that appear throughout the game — their movesets and patterns evolve as you progress — and enemies with glowing red eyes that guard treasure chests and key items. But the 10 listed below are the full roster of named story boss fights.
- General Lothaire, The Eagle-Bearer — Chapter 2
- The Iron Marshall — Chapter 3
- Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy — Chapter 4
- Slaughtermill — Chapter 5
- Anna, The Bride Drowned in Tears — Chapter 6
- High Justicar Aurelius, Last of the Faithful — Chapter 7
- Experiment 83 — Chapter 8
- The Orphan — Chapter 9
- Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris — Chapter 10
- Entity, Voice of the Void — Chapter 10

How Long Does Each Chapter Take?
One More Level has not published per-chapter timing, and playtime varies significantly based on how much you explore, how quickly combat clicks, and how many attempts difficult bosses require. What we do know from official sources:
- The main campaign takes around 20 hours on a focused run.
- A completionist run exploring every optional area, completing all side quests, and finding all Ambers will push closer to 30 hours or more.
- Story DLC is planned for 2027, which will add additional playtime beyond the base game.
Chapters 2 and 7 are among the longer ones based on Lantern count (six each). Chapters 8 and 4 are among the shorter in terms of Lanterns, though boss difficulty compensates. The Fortress chapter at the end is short in number of Lanterns but the fights are the hardest in the game.
