Watch Dogs Has No Games in Active Development, Ubisoft CEO Confirms

    By Mark Smith · October 6, 2026 · 6 min read
    Watch Dogs
    • Key Takeaway: Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed in an investor Q&A that Watch Dogs is considered “an important brand for the future” but that no new game is currently in active development.
    • The IP is not currently part of any of Ubisoft’s newly restructured “Creative Houses,” suggesting it sits outside the company’s immediate priority lineup.
    • Earlier in 2026, insider Tom Henderson reported the franchise was “completely dead” following the mixed reception and poor performance of Watch Dogs: Legion.
    • A Watch Dogs film directed by Mathieu Turi is in post-production, starring Sophie Wilde, Tom Blyth, and Markella Kavenagh — but it still has no release date after undergoing reshoots in 2025.
    • Watch Dogs 2 remains the franchise high point for most fans, with Legion’s ambitious “play as anyone” concept failing to keep the series’ momentum going.

If you’ve been waiting for Ubisoft to say something — anything — concrete about the future of Watch Dogs, the latest update from CEO Yves Guillemot is not exactly the news you were hoping for. During an investor Q&A, Guillemot was asked directly about where the franchise is headed. His answer confirmed that the IP isn’t going anywhere permanently, but it also made clear that nothing is actively being built right now.

Guillemot described Watch Dogs as “an important brand for the future” without elaborating on what that actually means in practice. According to Game File‘s Stephen Totilo, who covered the exchange, the Ubisoft CEO suggested there are no Watch Dogs games currently in active development. The IP also isn’t part of any of Ubisoft’s newly formed “Creative Houses” — the internal structural groupings the company set up as part of its 2026 reorganization — which signals it sits well outside the company’s near-term priorities.

    How Watch Dogs Got Here

The Watch Dogs franchise launched in 2014 with significant hype. Ubisoft positioned it as a competitor to Grand Theft Auto 5 — a bold claim — and while the original game sold well and made an impact in the open-world crime genre, most players felt it didn’t fully live up to the ambition Rockstar had set as the benchmark. The game had originally been planned to launch alongside the PS4 in November 2013 before being delayed, which only compounded the pressure on it.

Two years later, Watch Dogs 2 arrived and was a significant improvement across the board — better characters, a more vibrant San Francisco setting, and a lighter tone that gave the hacking mechanics more personality. Fans embraced it as proof the series could become something genuinely great. Then came Watch Dogs: Legion in 2020, which tried something genuinely ambitious: the ability to recruit and play as any NPC in the game’s London setting, with no fixed protagonist. It was a fascinating concept that ultimately landed with mixed reception. The execution couldn’t carry the ambition, and without a strong central narrative anchor, the game felt diffuse in ways that mattered to players and reviewers alike.

That reception had consequences. Industry insider Tom Henderson reported in January 2026 that Watch Dogs was “completely dead” inside Ubisoft following the company’s broader restructuring, which included studio closures, cancelled games, and layoffs. Ubisoft had axed at least six projects including the long-in-development Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, and Watch Dogs reportedly got swept up in that same culling. A separate insider, Shinobi602, pushed back slightly at the time — saying the IP wasn’t “exactly” dead — but didn’t offer specifics. Guillemot’s latest comments largely confirm what Henderson was suggesting: no one at Ubisoft is actively building a new Watch Dogs game right now.

A Legion Director’s Cut was rumoured in March 2026, reportedly featuring new content, a night mode, and new motion capture performances — with Henderson himself clarifying he may have overstated the franchise’s death earlier. Whether that project is still moving is unclear.

    The Shadow of GTA 6

Timing matters here too. Even if Ubisoft wanted to greenlight a new Watch Dogs game tomorrow, releasing anything in that space while GTA 6 dominates the open-world crime genre from November 2026 onward would be an extraordinarily difficult commercial proposition. Watch Dogs has always been measured against GTA and found wanting by a significant portion of the audience, and with Rockstar about to release what could be the biggest game of the generation, carving out space for a competing franchise in that exact genre lane requires either exceptional product quality or exceptional timing — ideally both. Ubisoft currently has neither advantage in its corner for Watch Dogs.

The smart play, if Ubisoft is genuinely serious about the franchise’s future, is to wait — let GTA 6’s launch window pass, reassess what the market looks like, and approach a new Watch Dogs only when the company has the creative focus and financial stability to actually execute it properly. Guillemot’s comments hint at exactly that kind of patient calculus, though whether Ubisoft gets to that point in a meaningful timeframe remains very much open.

What About the Watch Dogs Movie?

There is at least one Watch Dogs project that exists in a tangible form right now — the live-action film adaptation produced by New Regency, directed by French filmmaker Mathieu Turi. The movie stars Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Tom Blyth (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and Markella Kavenagh (The Rings of Power), with the script written by Christie LeBlanc and Victoria Bata.

Principal photography wrapped on September 13, 2024, which made it feel like a release was on the near horizon. Then reshoots happened in 2025 — and since then, silence. As of right now, the Watch Dogs film has no confirmed release date and has received no meaningful promotional push. Blyth has confirmed in interviews that the film is “not the game” — implying the story departs from the source material in notable ways — which is either encouraging or concerning depending on your relationship with the games.

New Regency’s track record is mixed in the video game adaptation space: they also produced the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film, which was a critical and commercial disappointment despite a strong cast. Whether they can do better with Watch Dogs is genuinely unknown — the film is sitting in post-production limbo without even a rough release window to point at.

What’s clear is that the Watch Dogs franchise is in a holding pattern on both fronts. The games are paused with no clear path back into active development. The movie is finished but invisible. And one of the most interesting open-world sci-fi concepts in gaming is sitting on a shelf while the genre it was born to compete in is about to get redefined all over again.
