Why Cooking Matters in Where Winds Meet

Cooking isn’t just a side activity—it’s one of the most practical survival and progression mechanics in the game. When you’re deep in a tough dungeon or facing a boss that’s chipping away at your health, having a solid lineup of cooked meals can be the difference between clearing the encounter and getting sent back to respawn. Whether you’re healing up between fights or stacking temporary buffs before a big encounter, knowing your way around the cooking pot is essential.

Plus, unlike some RPGs where cooking feels optional, Where Winds Meet rewards you for actually using it. The buffs are meaningful, the recovery meals tick down real HP restoration, and ingredients are common enough that you won’t be spending hours farming to stock up.

    How to Unlock Cooking Recipes

Here’s the thing about cooking in Where Winds Meet: every recipe technically exists in your cooking menu from the start, but you need to actually unlock them before you can use them. This isn’t just about reaching a level threshold—the game rewards you for exploring and engaging with its systems in different ways.

    Ways to Unlock Recipes:

    • Complete quests – Story and side missions often reward recipe unlocks
    • Fishing contests – Participate in fishing competitions for new discoveries
    • Exploration tasks – Progressing your exploration objectives unlocks recipes
    • Leveling up – Certain recipes become available at specific cooking levels
    • General exploration – Sometimes you just stumble upon new recipes while out in the world

The good news is that basic recipes are quick to unlock, so you won’t be wandering around without food options for long.

Getting Started: The Basics of Cooking

    Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Before you even approach a cooking pot, you need actual ingredients. You can obtain them through:

    • Hunting animals – Most meats come from taking down wildlife
    • Foraging – Herbs, mushrooms, and wild fruits are scattered around
    • Fishing – If you’ve unlocked fishing, certain recipes use river fish
    • Merchants – If you’re short on supplies, vendors in towns usually stock basics

Pro tip: Keep an eye out while exploring. You’ll naturally accumulate ingredients without specifically grinding for them, especially once you unlock fishing in Where Winds Meet.

Step 2: Find a Cooking Station

Cooking stations are easy to spot once you know what you’re looking for: any fire in the world with a cooking pot sitting above it. These appear regularly near settlements, wilderness rest points, camps, and other safe areas. If you’re out exploring and your health is getting low, look for smoke rising from the ground—that’s usually a cooking station.

    Step 3: Interact and Cook

Once you’ve found a cooking station with ingredients in your inventory:

    1. Approach the cooking station and interact with it to open the cooking interface
    2. Select your recipe from the available options (start with basics if you haven’t unlocked many)
    3. Verify you have the ingredients listed on the recipe screen
    4. Add your ingredients to the pot and confirm to start cooking
    5. Wait for the animation to finish as your character prepares the meal
    6. Collect your cooked dish – it now appears in your inventory ready to use

Stamina Cost: Cooking consumes your stamina, so if you’re planning to cook multiple meals back-to-back, pace yourself. You’ll need stamina for other activities too.

Best for: Endgame encounters. These recipes restore massive amounts of health—nearly 40,000 HP in just 3 seconds. If you’re pushing into the hardest content, these are your lifeline.

    Buff Meals (6 Total)

Buff meals are different from recovery meals. Instead of healing you, they provide temporary stat boosts that last 30 minutes. These are clutch for preparing before a tough boss fight or dungeon run.

Important: Buff effects refresh if you eat the same dish again, but they don’t stack with other buffs, and they don’t work during Trials. This means you can’t combine multiple buff meals for extra bonuses.

    Level 20 Buff Recipes

    RecipeStaminaIngredientsEffects
Carp with Fried Noodles811 Golden Carp, 2 Beauty’s Garment, 2 Mushrooms+1,100 Max HP (30 min)
Rotisserie Venison811 Deer Meat, 2 Bai Zhu, 2 Eggs+10–20 Physical Attack (30 min)

Best for: Early-midgame prep. The Max HP boost is useful for survivability, while the Physical Attack buff helps with damage output.

    Level 41 Buff Recipes

    RecipeStaminaIngredientsEffects
Crispy Pheasant811 Vicious Flower, 2 Lethal Frog Meat, 2 Mushrooms+20–40 Physical Attack (30 min)
Venison Ginseng Soup811 Venison, 2 Wild Ginseng, 3 Herbs+2,300 Max HP (30 min)

Best for: Mid-to-late game bosses. Crispy Pheasant provides a solid damage boost, while the soup nearly doubles the HP boost from lower-level recipes.

    Level 61 Buff Recipes

    RecipeStaminaIngredientsEffects
Braised Double Shreds811 Wei’s Purple Peony, 1 River Fish, 2 Great Bustard Meat+50–100 Physical Attack (30 min)
Pufferfish Soup821 Jade Tower Peony, 1 Pufferfish, 2 Wild Fruits+5,600 Max HP (30 min)

Best for: Endgame. Braised Double Shreds is an absolute monster for damage—up to 100 Physical Attack boost—while Pufferfish Soup provides over 5,600 Max HP, making you significantly more tanky for extended fights.

    Smart Cooking Strategy

    When to Use Recovery Meals

    Recovery meals are best used:

    • Mid-dungeon – Top off your health between pulls without leaving the area
    • Before boss fights – Go in at full health to maximize your chances
    • In multiplayer runs – Help yourself stay alive longer so your team isn’t carrying you
    • During exploration – If you’re low and far from a safe zone, cook up something quick

    When to Use Buff Meals

    Buff meals are best used:

    • Before starting a dungeon – Eat one as you’re heading in for 30 minutes of bonus stats
    • Before known tough boss fights – Especially useful if it’s your first time facing a specific encounter
    • In high-stakes PvP situations – If bounty hunting or competitive content is on the agenda
    • For Weekly challenges – Some weekly quests are legitimately hard; buffing up helps

Note: Buff meals don’t work during Trials, so don’t waste them preparing for Trial content.

    Ingredient Management

Since cooking consumes stamina and ingredients are finite, be strategic:

    • Stock early-game recipes – They’re cheap to cook and don’t use rare ingredients
    • Farm ingredients while exploring – Grab mushrooms, herbs, and meat as you go (no extra effort)
    • Save rare ingredients for higher-level recipes that give better returns
    • Check your daily activities – Some daily quests reward ingredients; grinding daily activities gives you free supplies

    Quick Cooking Tips

Finding Cooking Stations Faster: Settlements and rest points almost always have them. If you’re lost, heading toward marked locations on your map usually leads you to one.

Ingredient Variety: You don’t need to be super efficient with ingredients. The game gives you plenty through normal gameplay, so don’t stress about min-maxing your ingredient spending.

Low on Stamina? Focus on gathering for later. You don’t have to cook immediately—ingredients stay in your inventory. If you’re running low on stamina for combat, skip cooking until you’ve rested.

Buff Timing: Eat your buff meal right before entering the dungeon, not when you’re already inside. You want the full 30 minutes of bonus active when you need it most.
