How Wordle Works, in Case You’re New Here
Wordle gives you six tries to guess a five-letter word. After each guess, the tiles change color to tell you how close you got. Green means the letter is correct and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but sitting in the wrong position. Gray means the letter isn’t in the word at all. A new word drops every day at midnight local time, and everyone playing that day is working on the exact same word, which is part of why it caught on in the first place. Why Some Wordle Words Feel So Much Harder Than Others
It usually comes down to letter placement rather than the word itself being obscure. A word like STARE feels easy because S, T, A, R, and E all show up constantly in English and in common starting guesses. A word like GAWKY or PROXY feels brutal because it’s got a rare letter in an awkward spot, or a repeated letter you didn’t think to check for. Words with double letters trip people up the most, since most players assume a letter is “used up” once it turns green, and forget it might appear again elsewhere in the word.
Vowel placement matters just as much as vowel count. Two words can both have two vowels and play completely differently depending on where those vowels land. That’s part of why we break out vowel count as its own hint above instead of folding it into the general clue, it narrows things down more than people expect.
Tips for Solving Wordle Faster
- Open with a word that covers common vowels and consonants at once, something like ADIEU, STARE, or CRANE, rather than guessing blind.
- Don’t repeat a gray letter in your second guess just because it “felt right.” Gray means it’s gone, full stop.
- If your first guess turns up no yellows or greens at all, use your second guess to test five completely different letters rather than wasting it on a near-miss word.
- Watch for repeated letters once you’re down to your last two guesses. If you’ve got a green and a yellow of the same letter, there’s a good chance it appears twice.
- Keep an eye on word type. Wordle leans on common nouns and adjectives far more than obscure verbs or plurals, so if you’re stuck, think simple before you think clever.
What to Do If You’re Out of Guesses
If you’ve burned through five guesses and still haven’t cracked it, don’t panic and don’t just throw in a random word for your last try. Go back through what you know for certain: which letters are confirmed green, which yellows haven’t found a home yet, and which letters are fully ruled out. Nine times out of ten, there’s only one or two real word options left once you lay it out like that. That’s usually a faster path to the answer than staring at the keyboard hoping something jumps out.
