About the Story – Who Is Bai Wuchang?
You play as Bai Wuchang, a skilled female pirate warrior who wakes up in a cave with no memory. She is afflicted by a mysterious illness known as the Feathering Disease — a plague spreading across the land of Shu, turning people into grotesque monsters. Her goal is to find her missing sister, Bai Yu, while uncovering the truth about her past and the dark forces shaping the crumbling Ming Dynasty.
The game is set during the final years of the Ming Dynasty in 17th-century China. It blends historical figures, Chinese mythology, and dark fantasy into one dense, lore-rich world. Dialogue choices throughout the game affect which of the four endings you unlock.
How Many Chapters Are in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers?
The main story is divided into 5 chapters, each set in a distinct region of Shu. While the overall path is mostly linear, many areas are connected to each other and encourage backtracking and exploration. Some zones can only be unlocked after completing specific chapters, but there are usually multiple routes to reach them.
How Long Is the Game?
- Main story only: Around 30 hours or less.
- Full 100% completion: Around 45 hours or more, including all NPC questlines, optional bosses, and collectibles.
- Veteran soulslike players may finish faster due to familiarity with genre mechanics and boss patterns.
Chapter 1: Worship’s Rise

This is where your journey begins. Bai Wuchang wakes up near the Reverent Temple with no memory and the Feathering illness already taking hold. She learns she must travel to the Tang Emperor’s Palace to find clues about her missing sister, Bai Yu.
Worship’s Rise serves as the game’s extended tutorial region. It teaches you the core combat mechanics — dodging, stamina management, Obliterate mechanics, and how to deal with elemental status effects like Corruption.
Key Locations in Chapter 1
- Reverent Temple
- Lightzen Temple
- Shu Sanctum
- Bandit Cave
- Corpse Pits
- Buddha Cliffs
- Palace Hill
- Doomwillow Beach
Chapter 1 Key Bosses
- Bai Kru – Reverent Temple. A non-key tutorial boss triggered by talking to the Boatman NPC. You only get one attempt — if you lose, the fight is gone permanently.
- Master Raider – Man-Eating Dhutanga – Lightzen Temple. The first true key boss of the game. Features fiery attacks and a powerful AoE eruption at half health. Use Skyborn Might spells for extra damage.
- Tang Palace Maid – Buddha Cliffs. A non-key boss that introduces the Obliterate mechanic. Build up her Obliterate gauge with light and heavy attacks, then land a critical strike.
- Blightweaver – Great Centipede – Bandit Cave. A key boss fight.
- Soulwood (Reborn Treant) – Corpse Pits. A key boss fight.
- Commander Honglan – Palace Hill. The final key boss of Chapter 1. Defeating her ends the chapter with a cutscene.
Chapter 1 Tip: Talk to the Red-Clad Lady NPC at the Reverent Temple and at Doomwillow Beach. These conversations are required for unlocking the best ending later in the game. Do not skip them.
Chapter 2: Cloudspire

After the encounter with Commander Honglan, Bai Wuchang recovers at the Reverent Temple. She then sets out toward the cold mountain region of Cloudspire to reclaim a stolen relic and continue her search for Bai Yu.
Cloudspire is a harsh, snow-covered region with tricky environmental hazards, verticality, and more complex enemy types. There are four bosses to defeat here to advance the story.
Key Locations in Chapter 2
- Hillswatch
- Treasure Trove
- The Shaft
- Rebel Camp
- Snowpeak Pass / Snowfall Palace
- Wedding Hall
Chapter 2 Key Bosses
- Mistress of the Night – Huang Yan – Treasure Trove. Encountered as soon as you enter the Hillswatch area. A key boss fight.
- General of the North – Ai Nengqi – Rebel Camp. A non-key boss with good reward potential.
- Ming General – Liu Cheng’en – Snowpeak Pass. A key boss fight.
- Perfect Bride – Fang Ling – Wedding Hall. A key boss fight and one of the more visually striking encounters in the chapter.
Chapter 2 Tip: Complete Cloudspire City and Snowfall Palace before heading to Mt. Zhenwu. Going to Mt. Zhenwu too early will lock you out of important NPC questlines and may prevent you from reaching the true ending. Also talk to Fang Yao and He Youzai whenever you find them — their questlines carry through to the final region.
Chapter 3: Mt. Zhenwu
Mt. Zhenwu is a dense, multi-layered region featuring a Refugee Camp, an Avian Marsh, and the mysterious Avian Dwelling. The story deepens here as Wuchang gets closer to the truth behind the Feathering plague and the powers pulling strings behind the chaos in Shu.

Key Locations in Chapter 3
- Battlefield Pass
- Refugee Camp
- Avian Marsh
- Avian Dwelling
- Zhenwu Altar
- Zhenwu Temple
Chapter 3 Key Bosses
- Bo Sorcerer – A key boss fight. The White-Robed Elder can assist you in this fight if you have spoken to him correctly in previous regions and use the Bone Whistle item.
- South General – Liu Wenxiu – A non-key boss.
- Fierce Tiger and Sovereign – Zhang Xianzhong – A key encounter that moves the story forward.
Chapter 3 Warning: Interacting with the Storyteller at Zhenwu Altar is a point of no return for Chapter 1. Once you do this, you cannot return to the first region’s original state. Make sure you have finished everything in Worship’s Rise before triggering this conversation.
Chapter 3 Tip: Talk to the Red-Clad Lady at the Avian Dwelling shrine and choose “I agree” when prompted. This is a required step for unlocking the secret ending later. Also speak to the White-Robed Elder at the Refugee Camp and select “Agree” to set up his co-op assistance for the Bo Sorcerer boss.
Chapter 4: Worship’s Rise in Ruins
You return to the first region, but it is radically changed. The once-familiar Worship’s Rise is now partially destroyed and corrupted. This chapter revisits old locations in new ways and contains some of the most emotionally charged story beats in the game.

Key Locations in Chapter 4
- Reverent Temple (revisited)
- Burning Cavern
- Annalum
- Bride Boudoir
Chapter 4 Key Bosses
- Vermillion Feathers – Honglan – A rematch with Commander Honglan from Chapter 1, but now in a transformed state. A key story fight.
- Bo Magus – A key boss that is central to resolving one of the game’s major plot threads.
- Nightmare Demon – An optional encounter in this region.
Chapter 4 Tip: When you meet Xuanyangzi near the Burning Cavern, do not hand over the Jade Feather Chisel if you want to avoid the bad ending. For the true ending, choose to “remain silent.” Also, talk to the Storyteller at Annalum and agree to help him. This is needed to unlock the Ring of Samsara later.
Chapter 5: Bo Capital
Bo Capital is the final region of the game. It is a large, complex area with optional boss fights, hidden secrets, and the final confrontation. Before you proceed to the final boss, clean up any unfinished business — optional bosses, NPC questlines, and collectibles.
Key Locations in Chapter 5
- Forbidden Lands
- Depths of the Capital
- Gate of Truth
- Shrine Dwelling

Chapter 5 Key Bosses
- Demon of Obsession – An optional boss in Bo Capital. Requires completing specific NPC conditions to access. Defeating it gives you the Ring of Samsara – Rebirth material.
- Feathery Ambition – Xuanyangzi – The final boss of the game, found beyond the Forbidden Lands Shrine. This is a mandatory fight to finish any ending.
- Eternal Glory – Optional boss near the Avian Dwelling area. Available if you have met the requirements.
Chapter 5 Tip: After defeating the final boss, do not interact with the ending gate right away. Back up your save file first, especially on PC. The game forces you into New Game Plus immediately after you choose an ending. With a backup save, you can return and unlock all four endings without replaying the full campaign.
All Four Endings Explained
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has four distinct endings. Each one requires different choices and NPC interactions throughout the story. Here is a quick summary:
- Jarful of Medicine – The default ending. Complete the main story without fulfilling any of the special questline requirements. Interact with the gate and enter the Realm of Samsara.
- Successor of the Bo – Requires completing all interactions with the Red-Clad Lady across all chapters and choosing the right dialogue options.
- Dream’s Sweet Deceit (True Ending) – The most complex ending. Requires completing the full questlines of Fang Yao, He Youzai, and the White-Robed Elder, obtaining both halves of the Ring of Samsara, combining them at the Bo Capital altar, and entering the “Realm of Dreams” at the final gate. Many consider this the true conclusion to Wuchang’s story.
- Bound by Fate’s Threads – Requires consuming the Ring of Samsara – Rebirth before interacting with the final gate, then choosing “Enter the Realm of Truth.”
Important: All four endings are locked into the same playthrough structure. The game saves automatically and pushes you into New Game Plus after the credits. Back up your save on PC before reaching the final gate if you want to see multiple endings without replaying the full game.
General Story Walkthrough Tips
- Talk to every NPC you find. Many questlines are missable and tied to specific story triggers. Always exhaust all dialogue options before progressing past a region.
- Check shrine screens carefully. NPC portraits appear on the fast travel map when they are available for interaction. If you see one, go find them before moving on.
- Do not rush to Mt. Zhenwu. Finishing Cloudspire first is important for questline integrity and the true ending. Going out of order can break multiple questlines.
- Optional bosses give you practice and rewards. Even though they are not required for story progression, fights like the Gluttonous Monstrosity help you gear up before tougher mandatory encounters.
- New Game Plus is worth it. After finishing the story, NG+ lets you carry over your character and encounter upgraded versions of items and enemies.
