- Cloud gaming is only available in select regions — check xbox.com/regions to confirm your country is supported.
What Are the Xbox Cloud Gaming Requirements?
Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements are simpler than most people expect. You do not need a powerful PC, a gaming console, or any special hardware. To play console games from the cloud, you need an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential subscription and a supported game in a supported region, a supported device, a compatible controller connected via Bluetooth or USB, and a Wi-Fi or LTE connection with a minimum of 10 Mbps download speed.
The full list of what you need breaks down into five areas: subscription, internet connection, device, controller, and browser or app. This guide covers each one in detail so you know exactly what your setup needs before you start.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Subscription Requirements
Most Xbox Cloud Gaming content requires a paid Game Pass subscription. Here is how it works:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential — required to access the Game Pass library via cloud streaming. This covers hundreds of console games playable directly from the cloud on any supported device.
- Free Microsoft account — enough to play select free-to-play games through cloud gaming. You do not need a paid subscription for titles like Fortnite.
- Games you own — you can stream select cloud-playable games you own or have bought that are not included with Xbox Game Pass, on all supported devices including consoles, Windows PCs, TVs, phones, tablets, VR headsets, and browsers.
One important note: PC Game Pass and Game Pass for Console subscriptions do not support cloud gaming. You need Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential specifically for cloud streaming access.
For full details on which plan suits you best and what each one costs, see our Xbox Game Pass price guide and our Xbox Game Pass Ultimate guide.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Internet Speed Requirements
Your internet connection is the most important part of Xbox Cloud Gaming. A slow or unstable connection causes lag, blurry video, and dropped sessions — no matter what device you are using.
Minimum and Recommended Internet Speeds
| Quality Level | Download Speed Needed |
|---|---|
| Minimum (mobile / basic play) | 10 Mbps |
| Recommended (stable 1080p) | 20 Mbps |
| Best experience (1080p / 1440p) | 25–40 Mbps |
Whatever device you play on, Microsoft recommends an internet connection speed of at least 20 Mbps to ensure a stable connection while cloud gaming. The 10 Mbps minimum is sufficient for mobile play on phones, but larger screens and higher resolutions need more headroom.
Around 10 Mbps supports stable 1080p streaming, and around 40 Mbps is needed for the 1440p tier available to Ultimate subscribers. Beyond these thresholds, more speed does not improve the experience.
Latency Matters More Than Speed
Once you are above the minimum speed threshold, the quality of your connection matters more than the raw number. Cloud gaming is highly sensitive to latency — the time it takes for your button presses to travel to Microsoft’s servers and back.
- Latency (ping): Keep this below 40ms for smooth play. Above 80ms you will start to feel input delay on fast-paced games.
- Jitter: This is variability in your latency. High jitter causes inconsistent gameplay even if your average ping is acceptable.
- Packet loss: Even 1–2% packet loss causes stuttering and stream drops. This is the most disruptive connection problem for cloud gaming.
Wi-Fi vs Wired vs Mobile
Where possible, it is recommended that you play over a wired Ethernet connection, but it is also possible to play over 5GHz Wi-Fi or 5G with capable devices. If your wireless router is dual-band, broadcasting at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz, make sure your device is set up to connect over the 5GHz network.
In short:
- Wired Ethernet — best stability, lowest latency. Use this if possible on PC, smart TV, or console.
- 5GHz Wi-Fi — good for most play. Keep your device close to the router and minimise interference.
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi — prone to interference and congestion. Avoid for cloud gaming if you can use 5GHz instead.
- 5G mobile — works well in strong signal areas. Latency varies more than home broadband.
- 4G/LTE — functional for casual play but more latency-variable than home connections.
If your Xbox download speed is also slow on your home network, see our Xbox download speed slow fix guide for steps to optimise your connection.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Supported Devices
Xbox Cloud Gaming works on a wide range of devices. You do not need an Xbox console to play.
Windows PC
Play through the Xbox app for Windows (recommended) or directly in a browser at xbox.com/play. Supported browsers on PC are Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Opera GX. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are both supported.
Mac
No native Xbox app on Mac. Play through a supported browser — Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Safari — at xbox.com/play.
Android Phones and Tablets
Download the Xbox app from the Google Play Store. Works on Android phones and tablets. The app gives you the best experience on Android, with touch controls for supported games and full controller support via Bluetooth or USB.
iPhone and iPad
No dedicated Xbox app is available on iOS through the App Store for cloud gaming. Play through Safari, Chrome, or Edge on iPhone or iPad at xbox.com/play. For a near-app experience, add the site to your Home Screen using Safari’s share menu — this runs it as a web app with a full-screen view.
Xbox Consoles
Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and Xbox One X and S all support cloud gaming. On console, cloud gaming lets you start playing a game instantly without downloading it, and access games you do not have installed. This is particularly useful for Game Pass titles you want to try before committing to a download.
Samsung Smart TVs
The Xbox app is available on Samsung 2020 and newer Smart TVs. Access it through the Samsung Gaming Hub. You need a compatible controller — no console required. Supported models include 2020 and newer Samsung Smart TVs and Samsung 2022 and newer monitors. Visit the Samsung Gaming Hub for the current device list.
LG Smart TVs
The Xbox app is available on LG TVs with webOS 24 or newer versions. This includes select 2022 and 2023 models that have been updated to software version 23.20.01 or higher, including 2022 OLED TVs and 2023 OLED, QNED, Nanocell, and UHD TVs. Launch the Xbox app from the LG Gaming Portal.
Amazon Fire TV
The Xbox app is available on select Amazon Fire TV devices, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen).
Meta Quest VR Headsets
Xbox Cloud Gaming is available on select Meta Quest VR headsets. You can play on a large virtual screen in a VR environment — no TV or monitor needed.
Upcoming Devices in 2026
Xbox Cloud Gaming is also coming to select Hisense Smart TVs and TCL Google TV devices in 2026. Microsoft is continuing to expand the list of supported devices throughout the year.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Browser Requirements
If you are playing in a browser rather than through an app, you need one of these supported browsers:
- Microsoft Edge (recommended — best performance on Windows)
- Google Chrome
- Safari (iPhone, iPad, and Mac)
Make sure your browser is updated to the latest version. Older versions of Chrome or Edge may not support the WebRTC technology Xbox Cloud Gaming uses for streaming.
Firefox is not officially supported. If you try to open xbox.com/play in Firefox, you will be prompted to switch to a supported browser.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Controller Requirements
A controller is required for most games. Compatible controllers include official Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers, and more. Xbox also lists verified controllers that support cloud gaming on their support hub. Select games can be played with Xbox touch controls.
Supported controller types:
- Xbox Wireless Controllers — fully supported via Bluetooth or USB on all devices.
- PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense — supported via Bluetooth. Button prompts will show Xbox button labels rather than PlayStation symbols.
- Mobile controllers — Backbone, Razer Kishi, RiotPWR, GameSir, and other clip-on controllers for phones work with Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Third-party Bluetooth controllers — most standard Bluetooth controllers work. Check the Xbox verified controller list for confirmed models.
Connect your controller via Bluetooth or USB before starting a session. On phones and tablets, pair via Bluetooth in your device settings first, then launch the Xbox app or browser.
Touch controls are available for a growing number of games — look for the “Play with Touch” icon on game tiles in the library. These do not require a controller at all.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Regional Requirements
Xbox Cloud Gaming is not available in every country. Cloud gaming is supported in select regions. For a list of countries or regions that support cloud gaming, review the cloud gaming section at xbox.com/regions.
Countries with confirmed support include the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, India, Brazil, and most of Western Europe, among others. If your country is not on the supported list, cloud gaming will not be available even with an active Game Pass subscription.
