Xbox Game Pass subscribers, it’s time to clear the backlog. Four games are leaving the service on August 15, 2026 — and a couple of them are genuinely worth your time before they disappear. Whether you’ve been sitting on these or haven’t touched them yet, you’ve got a narrow window left to play them for free.
Here’s the full list of games leaving Xbox Game Pass on August 15:
- Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand — Console, PC, Cloud
- MENACE (Game Preview) — PC only
- Aliens: Fireteam Elite — Console, PC, Cloud
- Firewatch — Console, PC, Cloud
All four are currently available at a 20% discount for active Game Pass members until they leave on August 15. If any of these are on your radar long-term, that’s your chance to grab them permanently at a reduced price before the subscriber discount disappears along with the games.
Firewatch — The One You Should Drop Everything and Play Right Now
If you only have time for one game before August 15, make it Firewatch. Campo Santo’s narrative adventure from 2016 is the kind of game that sticks with you, and the good news is it only takes around four to five hours to finish. You can realistically clear it in a single evening.
You play as Henry, a fire lookout who retreats to the Wyoming wilderness to escape a complicated life back home. His only contact is Delilah, his supervisor at a distant tower who communicates with him through a walkie-talkie. Strange things start happening in the forest — and the tension builds from there in ways that feel genuinely unsettling without ever going full horror.
The writing between Henry and Delilah is the heart of the game. Their back-and-forth is funny, awkward, and surprisingly emotional. The voice acting from Rich Sommer and Cissy Jones holds the whole thing together. Campo Santo leaned into realistic adult dialogue in a way that most games don’t bother with — your character is a flawed, somewhat selfish person dealing with real-life weight, and that makes every conversation land differently than your typical game protagonist.
Firewatch holds a Metascore of 85 on Xbox and has sold over 2.5 million copies. Critics praised its atmosphere, its art direction, and its characters consistently. The ending is divisive — some people love it, some people feel let down — but the journey to get there is worth it either way. It’s the kind of short game that earns its runtime completely.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite — Go Out With Your Squad Before the Sequel Arrives
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is leaving Game Pass on August 15, which makes the timing a little ironic — its sequel, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, drops just 10 days later on August 25. Cold Iron Studios and Daybreak Game Company are launching the follow-up on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, and it’s not coming to Game Pass at launch.
The original Fireteam Elite is a co-op third-person shooter where you and up to two friends take on waves of Xenomorphs and Synthetics as Colonial Marines. If you and your crew have been sleeping on it, now’s the perfect time to run through it together. It’s not the deepest game ever made, but it nails the atmosphere of the Alien universe and the shooting feels satisfying in that brainless-fun kind of way.
The sequel is expanding the squad size from three players to four, adding a new fully customizable Specialist class, smarter enemy behavior, and a fresh campaign. Cross-platform co-op will be in from day one, including in-game voice chat. Standard Edition is priced at $49.99, with a 40th Anniversary Premium Edition at $69.99 that bundles in cosmetic DLC. Use your remaining time with the original to get a feel for the classes and gameplay loop before deciding if you want to pick up Fireteam Elite 2 at launch.

Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand — An Underrated Action RPG That Got Way Better
Atlas Fallen launched in 2023 to a pretty lukewarm reception. Then Deck13 came back with the Reign of Sand update in August 2024 — a massive free overhaul that reworked the opening act, added new voice acting, threw in new areas, new enemies, extra abilities, a New Game+ mode with Nightmare difficulty, and new challenge content. This isn’t just a patch; it’s essentially a definitive edition that turned a forgettable release into something actually worth recommending.
The game drops you into a sun-baked open world where you glide across sand dunes, fight giant wraith creatures, and build out a momentum-based combat system that rewards aggression. The more pressure you apply, the more powerful your attacks get. It’s satisfying once it clicks, and the traversal — gliding, air dashing, double jumping across the dunes — makes getting around feel fluid and fun.
It’s not a perfect game. The story is average, and if the original combat didn’t grab you before the update, the Reign of Sand changes probably won’t convert you. But for players who never touched the original, this version is a solid 7/10 action RPG that you can sink 15-20 hours into. The kind of game you’ll enjoy more than you expected going in, especially on Game Pass where there’s no risk.
MENACE — A Deep Tactics Game That Still Has a Lot of Growing to Do
MENACE is the odd one out on this list. Developed by Overhype Studios (the team behind Battle Brothers) and published by Hooded Horse, it’s been in Game Preview on PC Game Pass since February 5, 2026. It’s a turn-based sci-fi tactics game where you command squads of infantry, mechs, and armored vehicles across a lawless frontier called the Wayback system.
The bones are genuinely impressive. MENACE builds multi-stage operations where a single bad mission can derail your entire run — it’s not forgiving, and it assumes you’re willing to put in the work to understand its systems. Squad composition matters, mission planning matters, and enemy encounters are designed to punish tunnel vision. Early access reviews noted it as a serious entry in the tactics genre that stands out in a space that’s been playing it safe for years.
The catch: it’s still in early access, and it’s leaving Game Pass before hitting full release. That’s a bit of a shame for tactics fans who’ve been working through it. If you’re deep into a campaign, you’ll want to decide whether you want to purchase it directly on Steam or the Microsoft Store to carry on. The early access version already has 50+ mission types across multiple planets, with more content planned through the full release cycle.
Should You Buy Any of These Before They Leave?
With the 20% discount active for Game Pass members until August 15, here’s the quick breakdown on whether any of these are worth keeping long-term:
- Firewatch: Yes, if you haven’t played it. It’s a short, memorable game that holds up well and will likely be much cheaper than you think when discounted.
- Aliens: Fireteam Elite: Maybe — especially if you enjoyed it and plan to continue playing, or want to replay it solo before jumping into the sequel. Otherwise the sequel is the better long-term investment.
- Atlas Fallen: Reign of Sand: Worth it if you got into the gameplay loop. It’s a good deal at a discount for an open-world action RPG you can revisit.
- MENACE: If you’re a tactics game fan and you’ve been enjoying the Game Preview version, buying it now is the logical move given it’s still in active development and will only grow from here.
August 15 is the hard cutoff. After that, all four titles are gone from Game Pass with no confirmed return date. Make a plan for the next 12 days.
What’s Staying and What Else Is New on Game Pass
While losing these four stings a little — especially Firewatch — Game Pass in August is still kicking off strong. Beast of Reincarnation is already on the service, and more additions are expected to be announced through the rest of the month. Microsoft typically pairs departures with fresh additions to keep the library balanced, so keep an eye on the official Xbox announcements over the next few weeks.
It’s worth remembering that Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 not landing on Game Pass at launch is a separate decision — the sequel is a new release with a full asking price, so that’s a different calculation than a catalog title like the original. Whether it eventually joins Game Pass is anyone’s guess at this point.
