TL;DR
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword has five cosmetic categories: sword appearances, haori coats, Musashi outfits, Oni Gauntlet skins, and companion outfits for Okuni and the Oni Lady.
- All cosmetics are purely visual — none of them affect combat stats.
- Pre-ordering gives you Sealed Curse (all editions) and White Lion (Deluxe and Premium Deluxe).
- The Deluxe Kit adds four more sword skins, Red Armor, and the Crimson Lotus gauntlet.
- The Premium Deluxe Kit adds three haori coats and exclusive companion outfits on top of all that.
- Playing the free demo unlocks the Kubi Akari charm in the full game.
- You equip sword appearances through the Spirit Mirror → Change Appearance menu, which unlocks after completing “The Stage Is Set at Kiyomizu.”
- Some cosmetics can also be earned through in-game challenges and boss rematches in the Practice Ground.
All Outfits and Cosmetics in Onimusha: Way of the Sword span five different categories, and knowing exactly what is available — and where each item comes from — will save you a lot of confusion. Some cosmetics come with the edition you buy. Some need to be claimed at a Spirit Mirror. Some are earned through gameplay. This guide breaks everything down in one place so you know what you have, what you are missing, and how to get it all.
Before diving in, it is worth knowing that cosmetics in this game are managed across two separate menus. Sword appearances, haori, and outfits are all accessed through the Change Appearance option at any Spirit Mirror. Charms — the items that actually affect Musashi’s combat stats — are managed through the Equipment tab in the main menu and are a completely different system. If you want to know which charms are worth using in combat, our charms guide with all builds covers them fully. For a full breakdown of how Spirit Mirrors work, see our Spirit Mirrors guide.
Do Cosmetics Affect Gameplay in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
No. Capcom has confirmed this directly. Every cosmetic item in the game — sword appearances, haori coats, outfits for Musashi, gauntlet skins, and companion outfits — changes how characters look and nothing else. There is no damage boost, no stat change, no Issen timing difference. You are purely customising the visual experience.
The only items in the game with real gameplay effects are Charms. Even the charms included in the Deluxe Kit are genuine gameplay upgrades, which is a meaningful reason to consider higher editions beyond just cosmetics.
How to Equip Cosmetics in Onimusha: Way of the Sword
The process for equipping cosmetics is the same across all categories. Here is how it works.
For sword appearances, haori, and outfits: Find any Spirit Mirror and interact with it. Select Change Appearance from the menu. From here you can change Musashi’s sword appearance, haori coat, and outfit. Companion outfits for Okuni and the Oni Lady are also here if you have them. This option becomes available after completing the main quest “The Stage Is Set at Kiyomizu.”
For claiming pre-order and DLC items: You need to reach the first Spirit Mirror Okuni introduces you to, which happens after completing “The Ruckus at Rendaino.” At that point, select Additional Content from the Spirit Mirror menu to claim your edition bonuses. Note that even after claiming, you still cannot equip them until “The Stage Is Set at Kiyomizu” completes and Change Appearance unlocks.
For charms: Go to the Equipment tab in the main menu — not the Spirit Mirror. This unlocks separately from the cosmetic system and appears earlier in the game.
All Sword Appearances — Complete List
Sword appearances change how Musashi’s katana looks during combat and cutscenes. They are the most numerous cosmetic category in the game. Here is every one confirmed, organised by how you get each one.
Pre-Order Bonus Sword Appearances
These came free with any pre-order placed before the September 25, 2026 launch. Capcom has stated that pre-order bonuses may become available through other means after launch, so players who missed the window may still be able to access these eventually.
- Sealed Curse — Available with every pre-order of the Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe editions. A dark, cursed blade aesthetic.
- White Lion — Exclusive to Deluxe and Premium Deluxe pre-orders. A sword appearance inspired by the white lion.
Deluxe Kit Sword Appearances
These four sword skins come with the Deluxe Edition ($79.99) and Premium Deluxe Edition ($89.99) as part of the Deluxe Kit. They are not included in the Standard Edition.
- Bamboo & Panda — A playful nature-themed sword skin. A nod to the classic panda costume from the original Onimusha: Warlords. If you were specifically looking for this one, check our panda costume guide for the full details on getting it.
- Whittled Oar — A reference to Miyamoto Musashi’s legendary duel at Ganryujima, where he fought Sasaki Kojiro using a wooden sword carved from a boat oar. One of the most historically meaningful skins in the game.
- Raizan — A thunder-themed sword appearance with a visually striking look in combat animations.
- Enryuu — A fire-themed sword skin. Works especially well visually during high-intensity fights.
In-Game Unlockable Sword Appearances
Sword skins are not all locked behind paid content. Additional cosmetics can be earned through in-game challenges and boss rematches in the Practice Ground. The Practice Ground is accessible via the main menu and allows you to fight bosses again under set conditions. Performing well or meeting specific challenge requirements rewards cosmetic items, including sword appearances. The full list of in-game unlockable skins expands as players complete the full roster of boss fights. See our all bosses guide for a complete list of every fight in the game.
All Haori Coats — Complete List
Haori are the traditional Japanese coats Musashi wears over his outfit. Three exclusive haori are included only in the Premium Deluxe Edition ($89.99) and are not available in the Standard or Deluxe editions.
- Hellfire Haori — Premium Deluxe exclusive. A bold, fire-inspired design that pairs naturally with aggressive playstyles.
- Moonlight Haori — Premium Deluxe exclusive. A cool, night-sky aesthetic with a calm and elegant look.
- Cloudbiter Haori — Premium Deluxe exclusive. Atmospheric and dramatic, fitting for the mountainous areas of the game.
Haori are cosmetic only, like all other appearance items. They have no effect on Musashi’s defence, mobility, or any combat mechanic.
All Outfits for Musashi — Complete List
Musashi has one alternative full outfit available in the current edition lineup.
- Red Armor — Included in the Deluxe Kit, which comes with the Deluxe Edition ($79.99) and Premium Deluxe Edition ($89.99). A bold, red armoured look for Musashi that replaces his default outfit entirely. Purely cosmetic.
The default outfit Musashi wears throughout the game is also selectable at the Change Appearance menu. You can switch back to it at any point from a Spirit Mirror.
Oni Gauntlet Skin
The Oni Gauntlet is Musashi’s supernatural gauntlet that powers his Oni abilities. It has one available cosmetic skin.
- Crimson Lotus — Included in the Deluxe Kit (Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions). Changes the visual appearance of Musashi’s gauntlet arm during gameplay and cutscenes. It has no effect on Oni Armament abilities or Oni Power mechanics.
All Outfits for Okuni — Complete List
Okuni is one of the key supporting characters in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Three exclusive outfits for her are included in the Premium Deluxe Edition only.
- Flower Dance — Premium Deluxe exclusive.
- Goldfish Dance — Premium Deluxe exclusive.
- Oni Dance — Premium Deluxe exclusive.
These are purely cosmetic changes to Okuni’s appearance and do not affect her behaviour, dialogue, or any in-game function.
All Outfits for the Oni Lady — Complete List
The Oni Lady lives within Musashi’s gauntlet and appears during key moments in the story. Three exclusive outfits for her are also included in the Premium Deluxe Edition only.
- Bird Call — Premium Deluxe exclusive.
- Snow Camellia — Premium Deluxe exclusive.
- Elegance — Premium Deluxe exclusive.

Free Bonus — Demo Save Data Reward
The free demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword was available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Playing the demo and keeping the save data rewards a bonus item in the full game. While this is a charm rather than a cosmetic skin, it is worth knowing about.
- Charm: Kubi Akari — Earned by having demo save data when you start the full game. Charms affect Musashi’s actual combat abilities, so this is a genuine gameplay reward, not just visual.
The demo charm is claimed through the Spirit Mirror’s Additional Content menu, the same place you claim pre-order and DLC items.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Cosmetic System
- Check the Spirit Mirror after every major story chapter. The Change Appearance menu can expand as you progress. New items tied to story milestones appear here when they unlock.
- Use the Practice Ground for in-game cosmetics. Boss rematches in the Practice Ground reward cosmetic items for good performance. This is the main way to earn skins without buying a higher edition.
- Do not confuse charms with cosmetics. Charms go in the Equipment tab in the main menu. Sword skins, haori, and outfits go through the Spirit Mirror’s Change Appearance option. They unlock at different points in the story, so one may be available before the other.
- You can swap cosmetics for free at any time. There is no cost to change your sword appearance or outfit. Just visit any Spirit Mirror and swap at will.
- Cosmetics carry over into New Game Plus. Everything in your cosmetic collection transfers when you start a new run. You can equip your preferred look from the very first Spirit Mirror.
- Pre-order bonuses may become available post-launch. Capcom has stated that bonuses like Sealed Curse and White Lion may be made available later. If you missed them, keep an eye on the official Capcom channels for updates.
Cosmetics vs Charms — What Is the Difference?
This is a common point of confusion, so it is worth being clear. Cosmetics are purely visual. Sword appearances, haori, outfits, and gauntlet skins change how Musashi and his companions look, and that is all they do.
Charms are the opposite — they are actual gameplay items that boost Musashi’s abilities in real ways. Some charms come included in higher editions of the game alongside the cosmetics. The Deluxe Kit includes three charms (Oni Lady, Little Dancer, and Mentor) that give genuine combat advantages, which is part of why higher editions can be worth it beyond the visual upgrades.
If you want to know which charms do what and which ones to prioritise for different playstyles, our full charms guide and best builds covers all 15 charms in detail. And if you are looking specifically for the panda-themed cosmetic that many players search for, our guide on the Bamboo & Panda sword skin explains exactly what it is and how to get it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do any cosmetics in Onimusha: Way of the Sword affect combat?
No. Every cosmetic in the game is purely visual. Sword appearances, haori coats, outfits, and gauntlet skins all change what Musashi and his companions look like and nothing else. Stats, damage, speed, and all other gameplay mechanics are entirely separate from cosmetics. The only items that affect Musashi’s performance are Charms.
Can Standard Edition players unlock any cosmetics?
Yes, through in-game play. The Practice Ground allows boss rematches, and performing well in those challenges unlocks cosmetic rewards, including sword appearances. Standard Edition players who pre-ordered also received the Sealed Curse sword appearance. Capcom has confirmed that pre-order bonuses may become available post-launch, so additional options may open up over time.
When does the Change Appearance menu unlock?
The Change Appearance option at Spirit Mirrors unlocks after you complete the main story quest “The Stage Is Set at Kiyomizu.” You can claim your pre-order and DLC items slightly earlier — once Okuni introduces you to your first Spirit Mirror after completing “The Ruckus at Rendaino” — but equipping them requires the Change Appearance feature, which comes one chapter later.
Does the Premium Deluxe Edition include more sword appearances than the Deluxe?
No. Both the Deluxe Edition and Premium Deluxe Edition include the same set of sword appearances: Bamboo & Panda, Whittled Oar, Raizan, and Enryuu from the Deluxe Kit, plus Sealed Curse and White Lion from pre-order bonuses. The Premium Deluxe upgrade adds haori coats, companion outfits for Okuni and the Oni Lady, and the digital soundtrack — but no additional sword skins.
Where is the full panda costume like in the original Onimusha?
There is no full-body panda costume in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The original Onimusha: Warlords had an unlockable panda suit for Samonosuke earned by completing the game and collecting Fluorite. In Way of the Sword, the equivalent is the Bamboo & Panda sword appearance, which changes the look of Musashi’s katana. It comes with the Deluxe Kit in the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions. For a deep look at this specific skin, see our panda costume guide.
