What Are Oni Armaments in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

Oni Armaments are special demon-forged weapons that Musashi can summon mid-fight using his Oni Gauntlet. They are not permanent weapons you swap freely. Instead, you activate them by spending your Oni Power Gauge, which fills up as you absorb blue souls from defeated Genma.

Once you activate an armament, you get a burst window of high-damage attacks before the gauge runs dry. Then you’re back to your katana. The key word here is commitment. Activating one at the wrong moment wastes your gauge on a fight that didn’t need it — and then you arrive at a tough boss encounter with nothing left in the tank.

There are 7 Oni Armaments total in the game. Each one works differently. Picking the right armament for the right situation is one of the most important skills you can develop in Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

How the Soul System Feeds Your Armaments

Defeated enemies drop three types of souls — yellow, red, and blue. Here is what each one does:

    • Yellow souls restore Musashi’s health.
    • Red souls are used for permanent upgrades — your katana, clothing, gauntlet, and abilities.
    • Blue souls fill the Oni Power Gauge, which powers your Oni Armaments.

Blue souls are the scarcest of the three. Every orb matters. On top of that, hitting enemies while an Oni Armament is active will generate yellow souls — so you get health back while you deal big damage. That’s a huge reason to stay in the burst window instead of immediately switching back to your sword.

Also worth knowing: if you invest red souls into upgrading your Oni Gauntlet, it absorbs souls faster and at a wider range. A neglected gauntlet means slow absorption and a near-empty blue soul gauge going into tough fights. Don’t ignore it.

All 7 Oni Armaments in Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Here is every Oni Armament in the game, what it does, and exactly where to find it. A few of these can be missed if you skip chests, so read carefully.

    1. The Two Celestials

    Type: Dual daggers
Best for: Early-game damage and health recovery

    The Two Celestials
    The Two Celestials

This is your first Oni Armament and you get it early in the story. The Two Celestials are a pair of blades that deal quick, straight damage. More importantly, they extract yellow souls from the Genma as you hit them — which means you’re healing while you attack. That makes them genuinely useful early on, even if later armaments outclass them in raw power.

How to get it: Destroy the second Thread Genma locking the Oni Gate at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Loot the treasure chest that drops afterward. You get this during the story, so you cannot miss it.

    2. Oni Bow

    Type: Ranged bow
Best for: Range and story progression

    Oni Bow
    Oni Bow

The Oni Bow is a required part of the story. You need it to progress. It gives Musashi a ranged option that goes beyond his standard combat tools. The bow is useful for picking off enemies from a distance or dealing with enemies behind cover. It also appears as one of the armament slots but functions a bit differently from the burst-style weapons like Earth-Shakers or Flashing Void.

How to get it: Found in a chest on the main path leading to the Oni Refuge. It is part of the core story and cannot be missed.

    3. Wind-Whipper

    Type: Naginata that conjures whirlwinds
Best for: Crowd control — the best armament for groups

    Wind Whipper
    Wind Whipper

The Wind-Whipper is one of the best Oni Armaments in the game, especially against groups of Genma. When you activate it, it conjures whirlwinds that sweep through enemies in a wide area. Even three or four low-level Genma get obliterated almost instantly. Stronger enemies come out of it with significantly reduced health, making them much easier to finish off.

It can also deflect projectiles and can pick up the properties of nearby flames to deal fire damage on top of its wind attacks. That’s a flexible kit for a single armament.

How to get it: Automatically obtained during The Oni’s Apprentice quest. Takamura brings you to the Practice Ground and you get the Wind-Whipper along with a tutorial on using armaments. You cannot miss this one.

    4. Earth-Shakers

    Type: Heavy hammers
Best for: Boss fights — massive stamina and Break Damage

    Earth Shakers
    Earth Shakers

The Earth-Shakers are the go-to armament against single tough enemies and bosses. These hammers deal enormous stamina damage, which depletes enemy stamina gauges fast. Once the gauge is empty, you can land Break Issen attacks — brutal finishers that deal devastating damage. Against bosses, this is a powerful loop.

The downside is the charge time. A fully charged Earth-Shakers hit deals far more damage than an uncharged one. But during that charge, you’re open to attack. You need to read enemy patterns and find the right window to charge up safely. Our guide to beating Sasaki Ganryu covers how to use Break Issen openings effectively in a real boss fight.

How to get it: Found in a chest in the Underground Laboratory during the What Lurks in the Shadows main quest. It’s in the room right after the broken turbine fan puzzle, on Underground Level 4. This is the first armament you can actually miss, so check that chest carefully. You can return via fast travel if you missed it.

    5. Firebird Flute

Type: Flute that summons flaming birds
Best for: Crowd control with fire damage and stagger

The Firebird Flute is a great alternative to the Wind-Whipper if you like variety. Playing the flute summons flaming birds and launches them at nearby enemies. It deals fire damage to up to three foes at once and stagger them on hit — which gives you follow-up attack openings. It doesn’t have the pure radius power of the Wind-Whipper, but staggering enemies gives you room to follow up with Issen or more sword attacks.

How to get it: Found in a chest in the southeast area of Kyoto during the Shadows Fall quest. It’s located south of the Gojo Street Spirit Mirror, near where the Rift appears in that mission. You can miss it, but you can return to the area via fast travel.

    6. Flashing Void

    Type: Powerful single-target weapon
Best for: Raw health damage on tough enemies

    Flashing Void
    Flashing Void

The Flashing Void is arguably the most powerful armament for pure damage against a single strong target. Where the Earth-Shakers excel at stamina damage, the Flashing Void tears directly through an enemy’s health pool. Its biggest advantage is how it handles charging — activating the charge actually slows time, and you can do it from a safe distance. That makes it much safer to use than the Earth-Shakers in terms of staying out of danger.

It is also the easiest armament to miss in the entire game. Many players walk right past it.

How to get it: Located in a dead-end cavern on the route to Mount Oe Castle Courtyard during the Demon on the Mount quest. As you head up from the valley toward the castle, there’s a small side passage on your right. The chest is in there. If you missed it, you can go back after the quest.

    7. Still Water

    Type: Late-game armament
    Best for: Late-game encounters

Still Water is the seventh and final Oni Armament in the game. You find it in the late-game area of Arashiyama. Like the others, it adds another option to your combat toolbox for the final stretch of the story. Make sure you explore the swamp area fully before reaching the Point of No Return — the final mission, The Clash at Rendaino.

How to get it: Found in a chest in the Swamp of Arashiyama, in the northeastern corner of the map. This one is tucked away, so explore carefully. You can still find all armaments up until the Point of No Return, and keeping a manual save at that point lets you go back and clean up anything you missed.

Oni Power Abilities – What They Are and How They Work

Oni Armaments are summoned weapons. Oni Power abilities are something different. These are passive and active powers that Musashi gradually unlocks as the story progresses. They come from the Oni Gauntlet itself and serve both combat and exploration purposes.

Think of it this way: armaments are your burst damage tools. Oni Power abilities are permanent upgrades that change what Musashi can do at all times.

For a deeper look at how these tie into beginner strategy, see our tips and tricks for beginners in Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

    Oni Vision

Oni Vision lets Musashi see things that normal human eyes cannot. It reveals hidden Genma, Malice threads woven through the environment, and hidden obstacles. In exploration, this is essential for solving puzzles and finding paths that are otherwise blocked. In combat, it acts as a threat-detection tool — helping you spot enemies before they spot you and plan your approach.

Oni Vision is also useful for finding souls you might otherwise miss after a fight. More souls mean more fuel for your armaments.

    Oni Strength

Oni Strength gives Musashi inhuman arm power. In combat, it lets him break through enemy defenses that would normally block or resist regular sword attacks. Against heavily shielded enemies, this is a game-changer. It also helps outside of combat — some environmental obstacles in Kyoto require Oni Strength to move or destroy, opening up new areas of the map.

This ability pairs well with the Earth-Shakers armament. If a tough enemy is blocking aggressively, use Oni Strength to crack their guard open, then switch to the Earth-Shakers for heavy stamina damage.

    Oni Agility

Oni Agility is explosive leg power. It enhances Musashi’s movement and allows him to wall-run on specific surfaces — something no regular samurai could do. In combat, it lets him reposition quickly, dash away from danger, or close distance on a retreating enemy. In exploration, wall-running opens up vertical paths that would be completely inaccessible otherwise.

The wall-running is limited to specific designated surfaces, so don’t expect to run on everything. But in areas where it works, it makes navigation significantly faster.

    Oni Awakening

Oni Awakening is the most powerful ability in the set. It essentially makes Musashi invulnerable for a period of time and boosts his core attributes to a level that is described as beyond human limits. Think of it as a temporary super state — you take no damage and hit much harder. It’s a resource to save for the moments that matter most: a boss phase you’re struggling to survive, an overwhelming group fight, or a section where everything seems to be going wrong at once.

Managing when to trigger Oni Awakening is one of the higher-skill decisions in the game. Use it too early and it’s wasted. Save it properly and it can turn a potential death into a clean victory.

Best Oni Armament Strategy for Different Situations

Knowing which armament to use in which moment is the skill that separates average play from great play. Here’s a simple breakdown:

    • Groups of weak Genma: Wind-Whipper or Firebird Flute. Both hit multiple enemies. Wind-Whipper has the wider range; Firebird Flute staggers for follow-up attacks.
    • Single boss or mini-boss: Earth-Shakers for stamina damage and Break Issen setups, or Flashing Void for direct health damage from a safe distance.
    • Low health mid-fight: The Two Celestials. Their yellow soul generation heals you as you attack. Activate them when you need health in a hurry.
    • Heavily armored or blocking enemies: Use Oni Strength first to crack their defense, then Earth-Shakers to crush their stamina.

The most important habit to build: never spend your entire Oni Power Gauge early in a dungeon just because you can. Always keep some blue soul charge ready for what’s ahead. If you’re heading into a known boss fight, don’t burn your gauge on standard Genma you can kill with your sword.

For more on how to build these habits from the start, our beginner tips guide walks through the core mindset. And if you want to understand the full combat loop that armaments slot into, our Flow State trophy guide shows how parrying, Issen, and armament use all connect.

How to Upgrade Your Oni Armaments

You can upgrade your Oni Armaments using Oni Stones, which are collectibles found throughout the game world. On top of that, red souls fund improvements to the Gauntlet tree, which includes things like soul absorption speed and range. A faster gauntlet fills your blue soul gauge quicker — which means you get access to armament burst windows more often per fight.

Don’t make the mistake of pouring every red soul into your katana tree. A powerful katana with a slow, starved gauntlet means you rarely get to use your armaments at all. Keep the gauntlet funded — it’s the engine behind your entire Oni toolkit. You can find the full list of system requirements and technical info if you’re playing on PC and want the smoothest performance while pulling off these systems.

Can You Miss Any Oni Armaments?

Yes. A few armaments are locked behind chests that are easy to walk past. Here’s a quick summary of which ones you can miss and which you cannot:

    • Cannot miss (story-given): The Two Celestials, Oni Bow, Wind-Whipper.
    • Can miss but return to: Earth-Shakers, Firebird Flute, Flashing Void, Still Water.

The Flashing Void is the most commonly missed one. It’s in a dead-end side passage on the way to Mount Oe — easy to walk straight past if you’re focused on reaching the castle. The good news is you can return to any area before the Point of No Return. Keep a manual save at that point, and you can go back and collect anything you skipped. Collecting all 7 unlocks the Oni Armory trophy/achievement.

For a full review of how these systems feel in practice, check out our Onimusha: Way of the Sword review.

You can get the game on Steam for PC, PlayStation Store for PS5, or Xbox Store for Xbox Series X/S. You can also find more official info on the Capcom Onimusha official site.
