PC players waiting on GTA 6 have been bracing for a long wait — and history gives them every reason to. Rockstar has consistently delayed its PC versions by a year or more after console launches, almost as a matter of tradition. But something might be different this time. VGC’s Andy Robinson, one of the more plugged-in gaming journalists in the industry, said on a recent podcast that there is genuine noise circulating about Rockstar moving the GTA 6 PC release up sooner than most people expect. And the reason behind it makes more sense than you might think.
What Andy Robinson Actually Said
During the September 4 episode of the VGC Podcast, Robinson and his co-hosts were discussing the wider impact that rising console hardware costs are having on the gaming industry — a very real, very ongoing crisis in 2026. Mid-conversation, Robinson dropped this:
“I do think they’ll push the PC version up. There’s a bit of noise about that. That perhaps the PC version might arrive sooner than some people might expect. Just because of everything that is going on. Maybe we’ll be surprised.”
That’s not a confirmed release date. That’s not a Rockstar statement. Robinson himself was careful to frame it as industry chatter rather than a hard source. But VGC has a strong track record on Rockstar specifically, and Robinson’s phrasing — “I do think they’ll push it” rather than “I’ve heard it’s possible” — suggests this is more than idle speculation. The “everything going on” he’s referencing is the hardware price situation, which is considerably worse than most casual observers realize right now.
The Console Price Crisis Is Real — and It’s Getting Worse
This is the context you need to understand Robinson’s comment properly. Current-gen consoles in 2026 are not getting cheaper as they age. They are actively getting more expensive, repeatedly, because of a global DRAM and NAND memory shortage that is being driven in large part by AI data center demand consuming available supply.
Here’s where prices actually stand right now:
- PS5 (disc edition) — $649.99 following Sony’s April 2026 price hike
- PS5 Digital Edition — $599.99
- PS5 Pro — $899.99
- Xbox Series X (disc) — $799.99 effective August 1, 2026, a $150 increase
- Xbox Series X Digital — $749.99
- Xbox Series S (512GB) — $499.99
Microsoft cited the cause directly: “console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x,” with the company warning of “another doubling expected by the fall of 2027.” That is a stunning figure. A 40-50% memory price increase is expected in Q3 2026, with another 30-40% in Q4 2026. This isn’t a temporary blip — forecasts point to memory supply not loosening meaningfully until 2027 or 2028.
To put the Xbox situation in simple terms: the Xbox Series S was originally pitched as the affordable current-gen option, and now that same console costs as much as a PS5 disc edition did at launch in 2020. The console that was supposed to be the budget entry point has priced itself out of that role entirely.
The practical result: a meaningful chunk of players who would have bought a PS5 or Xbox Series X specifically for GTA 6 simply cannot afford to. They either already have a capable gaming PC, or they’d rather spend money there than drop $649 minimum on a console for one game.
Rockstar’s Track Record With PC Releases
Rockstar’s history with PC ports makes PC players’ anxiety very justified. The delays have consistently been significant:
- GTA IV — over 7 months after console launch
- GTA V — over 18 months after initial console launch (launched on PS3/Xbox 360 in September 2013, came to PC in April 2015)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 — just over a year (console October 2018, PC November 2019)
- Red Dead Redemption 1 — over 14 years, finally arriving on PC in late 2023
GTA V’s PC version is particularly relevant here because GTA 6 is going to draw the same comparisons. That 18-month gap was infuriating to PC players at the time — and many of them will be watching GTA 6’s situation with that experience in mind. If GTA 6 on PC arrives even within 12 months of the November 19 console launch, it would already be a meaningful improvement over GTA V’s pattern.
The Corsair VP Comment — Earlier Evidence Pointing the Same Direction
Robinson’s podcast comments aren’t the first signal on this from someone adjacent to the industry. In early 2025, Corsair Gaming Vice President Ronald van Veen mentioned during an investor call that his company’s internal expectations were for GTA 6 to launch on console followed by a PC release just months later — a dramatically shorter window than anything Rockstar had done with previous titles.
That comment came before GTA 6 was pushed to its current November 19, 2026 release date, which means van Veen was working from an earlier projected timeline. Whether the delay reshuffled PC plans is genuinely unclear — it’s possible the same relative window was preserved, just shifted later to account for the console launch moving. Corsair obviously has skin in the game around PC hardware sales, so take the source for what it is, but the directional signal lines up with what Robinson said this week.
Why an Earlier PC Release Makes Financial Sense for Rockstar
Beyond the hardware access argument, there’s a pure revenue case for Rockstar to not sit on the PC version for too long.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly described PC as a “critical, high-margin revenue engine” for the publisher. GTA V’s PC version eventually became its best-performing version by some metrics — it brought in an entirely new wave of players who had skipped the console releases, and it extended GTA Online’s revenue window significantly. PC players tend to buy more DLC, spend more in online stores over longer periods, and retain higher engagement with live-service elements.
With the console install base for GTA 6 potentially capped by hardware affordability issues, PC becomes an even more important revenue channel for the game’s first year of sales. An earlier PC launch means that audience — players who already have capable rigs and were never going to buy a $649 PS5 — don’t spend that money window on something else while waiting.
There’s also the modding community and nopixel connection to consider. Rockstar’s recent official embrace of GTA RP and the nopixel V launch we just covered is a PC-first development. The entire FiveM ecosystem that Rockstar now owns runs on PC. Getting GTA 6 on PC sooner rather than later means that ecosystem has a much bigger and more current game to build on.
What Rockstar and Take-Two Have Actually Said
Nothing confirmed. Rockstar’s official GTA 6 website lists only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no PC mention anywhere on the pre-order or platform pages. Strauss Zelnick has acknowledged that PC is a priority platform for Take-Two while simultaneously giving no timeline whatsoever for GTA 6’s PC arrival. The standard corporate line has been that the studio is focused on the November 19 console launch first.
That’s not unusual — announcing a PC date before the console game has even shipped would be a very atypical move for Rockstar. The more realistic expectation is that a PC announcement comes sometime after GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox, when Rockstar is ready to shift marketing attention toward a second wave of sales. Whether that announcement comes in early 2027, mid-2027, or later remains the actual unknown.
What to Realistically Expect
Treating Robinson’s comments as a confirmed early PC date would be premature — he was explicit that this is noise, not a locked plan. But the combination of factors here is genuinely interesting:
- Console prices are at historic highs and likely to keep rising into 2027
- Multiple independent signals pointing toward a shorter-than-usual PC gap
- Take-Two’s own public statements treating PC as a major revenue priority
- Rockstar’s ownership of the FiveM ecosystem giving them structural reasons to get GTA 6 on PC sooner
If “sooner than expected” means within six months of November 19, that would be genuinely surprising. If it means within 12 months — so before November 2027 — that’s historically significant for Rockstar but perhaps not as shocking given everything else going on. The early 2027 window is where most informed speculation is landing, and that would make it the shortest console-to-PC gap of any major Rockstar release to date.
The GTA 6 picture is getting sharper by the week. From the Criminal Profile system to the confirmed no-microtransaction launch stance to now whispers about a shorter PC wait — Rockstar is having a strong run of positive coverage with November 19 approaching fast. An official PC announcement would cap it off nicely, but for now, PC players are back to watching and waiting.
