TL;DR
- Mortal Shell 2 has 8 playable Shells — all usable at any time once unlocked.
- Tiel — stealth and speed, goes invisible, best for beginners who want to avoid getting hit.
- Proxima — tanky brawler with a lightning hook, great for players who like staying aggressive.
- Eredrim — high durability, slow but powerful, best for players who prefer to absorb hits.
- Tiel and Proxima locations are marked on your map automatically after the prologue.
- All Shells share weapons and Tarstones — switching Shells changes abilities, not your gear.
Mortal Shell 2 starts you off with Harros, the Vassal — a basic Shell that acts as a tutorial character. As soon as the prologue ends, Harros is gone permanently. You are left to find a new Shell on your own in the open world. The game has 8 playable Shells in total, but for beginners the choice can feel overwhelming. Which one do you go for first? Which one is the easiest to use? This guide covers the best Shells for beginners in Mortal Shell 2 and exactly where to find each one. If you are still figuring out the basics, our Mortal Shell 2 beginners guide is a great place to start before diving into Shell selection.
The most important thing to know upfront: every Shell shares the same weapons, Tarstones, and Sidearms. Switching Shells does not change your gear. It changes your stats and abilities. So your Shell choice is really a choice about how you want to fight. Read more about the best early weapons to pair with your Shell in our best weapons for beginners in Mortal Shell 2 guide.
How Shells Work in Mortal Shell 2
Shells are the remains of fallen warriors that your character — the Harbinger — inhabits across the world. Each Shell has its own passive trait and at least one active ability. These abilities define how you approach combat far more than raw numbers.
Once you find a Shell, it is permanently unlocked. You can switch between Shells at any Beacon. Shells can also be upgraded through the Bonding system at Marrow Keep by speaking with Zhirelle, the Shellkeeper. Unlocking Shell Memories gives you passive upgrades and new ability tiers.
Shell locations can be revealed in two ways. You can find them yourself through exploration, or you can pay Glimpse to Zhirelle to reveal their map location. Tiel and Proxima are the exception — their locations are automatically marked on your map once you complete the prologue and arrive at Marrow Keep. No Glimpse required. This makes them the natural first picks for beginners.
1. Tiel the Acolyte — Best Shell for Beginners Overall
Playstyle: Stealth, speed, critical damage
Difficulty: Easy — very forgiving for new players

Tiel is the single best Shell for beginners in Mortal Shell 2. He is fast, mobile, and his core ability gives him a powerful safety tool that no enemy in the game has an answer to. Tiel can turn invisible. That one mechanic alone makes early encounters and boss fights far more manageable when you are still learning enemy patterns.
Tiel’s Abilities
- Lingering Shadow (active): Tiel turns invisible, hiding from all enemies. While invisible, performing a light attack triggers Shadow Strike — a powerful blow that deals significant damage and often staggers enemies. This is his main damage tool.
- Shadow Dash (passive): When you dodge immediately before an attack hits you — a perfect dodge — Tiel automatically turns invisible for a few seconds and builds up stagger on the enemy. This rewards good timing but also bails you out when you need a moment to breathe.
Even with no upgrades, Tiel is strong. When fully upgraded, he can stay in Shadow for much longer, making him a dominant force throughout the entire game. He pairs especially well with fast weapons. The Axe & Dagger in particular matches his moveset perfectly — fast attacks, quick positioning, and high critical hit rate.
Where to Find Tiel
Tiel is the closest Shell to your starting area. From the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, head southeast down the dirt path. Look for a small camp with wooden walls in the distance. As you enter the camp, your screen will begin to pulse red — that means a Shell is nearby. Look to your left and you will find Tiel’s Shell inside a coffin that is partially buried in the ground. Interact with it to unlock him. You can do this within the first few minutes of leaving the prologue.

2. Proxima the Broodseeker — Best for Aggressive Beginners
Playstyle: Tanky brawler, lightning damage, gap-closer
Difficulty: Easy — built-in damage mitigation covers beginner mistakes

Proxima is the second Shell marked on your map automatically after the prologue. She sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from Tiel. Where Tiel avoids hits through invisibility and speed, Proxima tanks them. She has more health and resistance than most other Shells and is built for players who prefer to stay in an enemy’s face and trade blows.
Proxima’s Abilities
- Biosampler (active): Proxima fires a hook from her left arm. It pulls smaller enemies toward her, or pulls her toward larger enemies. The hook is followed immediately by a strike that inflicts Lightning damage. Lightning stacks over time and builds into a shockwave if applied enough times to the same target. This ability closes gaps fast and adds pressure with every use.
- Grafted Armor (passive): Proxima has a base 15% chance to mitigate any incoming melee or ranged hit. Mitigated hits deal 50% less damage and do not cause stagger. This is a huge passive for beginners — it means roughly one in every six or seven hits you take is cut in half and will not interrupt your attack chain.
There is a hidden bonus to Proxima that most beginners overlook. When her abilities are upgraded, she gains the ability to harvest biosamples from enemies. These biosamples can be sold to the merchant Merrick for gold. This makes Proxima the only Shell in the game with a built-in gold farming mechanic — a significant advantage as you try to buy maps, weapons, and upgrades early on.
Where to Find Proxima
From the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, head northeast up the sloping path and cross the ravine to reach the next Beacon, Blackridge Pass. From there, turn right and run past the enemies fighting with a Treant. Then turn left toward a glowing Beacon ahead. The Beacon takes an unusual form — it is called the Shattered Beacon. Avoid the alien insectoid-like enemy nearby and enter it. Inside, you will find Proxima’s Shell. Cleanse the Beacon and interact with her remains to unlock her.
3. Eredrim the Venerable — Best for Slow and Patient Players
Playstyle: Heavy tank, break damage, stagger control
Difficulty: Moderate to find, but very forgiving in combat once unlocked

Eredrim is a returning Shell from the original Mortal Shell and one of the tankiest options in Mortal Shell 2. He has high durability, absorbs punishment well, and his abilities focus on staggering enemies and controlling fights rather than dealing flashy damage. If you came from a Soulslike background and prefer a deliberate, heavy-hitting style, Eredrim is your Shell.
Eredrim’s Abilities
- Shoulder Bash (active): Eredrim lunges forward with his shoulder and slams into enemies, dealing significant Break Damage. This is excellent for interrupting enemy attacks and creating openings for heavy hits.
- Ethereal Diapason (active): Eredrim smashes his Diapason instrument to produce a blinding shockwave that deals Break Damage to all enemies in range. This is his area control tool — useful for dealing with groups or enemies that crowd you.
- Executioner (passive): Eredrim executes enemies at low health and earns Slaughterer stacks by performing Ripostes. This rewards players who learn to land parries and ripostes consistently.
Eredrim is built around the Break meter. The more Break Damage you deal, the more opportunities you get to Riposte, and Ripostes deal enormous damage in Mortal Shell 2. This Shell teaches you one of the most powerful combat mechanics in the game.
Where to Find Eredrim
Eredrim is located inside the Citadel of Penance on the northwest side of Fainweald. The easiest way to get there is through a small ruin on the northeast side of the map, not far from where you find the Gragu Shell. Look for a mysterious pouch with a strange aura. Interacting with it teleports you to the dungeons beneath the Citadel. When you try to leave, you will end up in a circular section that collapses underfoot, dropping you into a boss fight against The Warden. This enemy uses many unblockable attacks, so dodge everything and look for openings. Using Tiel during this fight makes it easier — go invisible after a perfect dodge and punish The Warden from behind. Once the fight is over, Eredrim’s body can be found impaled nearby. Interact with it to claim the Shell.
What About Harros — The Starter Shell?

Harros, the Vassal is available during the prologue only. He introduces you to the Shell system and the Harden mechanic — a defensive tool that lets you stone-freeze in place to absorb a hit. Once the prologue ends, Harros is gone permanently. You cannot get him back.
His departure is part of the story. The good news is the Harden mechanic carries over even without Harros, so you do not lose that defensive option entirely.
Quick Comparison: Best Beginner Shells in Mortal Shell 2
- Tiel — Invisible on dodge, stealth strikes, fastest and most forgiving. Best overall for beginners.
- Proxima — 15% damage mitigation passive, hook ability with lightning. Best for aggressive players who like staying in fights.
- Eredrim — High durability, break damage and stagger focus. Best for patient players who prefer a heavy approach.
Tips for Choosing Your First Shell
Here is a simple way to decide which Shell to use first.
- If dying frequently is frustrating you and you want a tool to escape pressure, pick Tiel. His invisibility is a panic button that always works.
- If you like staying on the offensive and want to trade hits without being punished too hard, pick Proxima. Her passive mitigation covers mistakes naturally.
- If you prefer a slow, deliberate playstyle and want to learn the Riposte system early, pick Eredrim. He rewards patience over aggression.
Remember that you can switch Shells at any Beacon. You are never locked in. Many players use Tiel for regular exploration and Eredrim for tough bosses, then switch back. Experiment and find what feels right for each situation.
Also invest in upgrades early. A Shell at Bond level 1 is much weaker than the same Shell at level 3. Unlock Shell Memories at Marrow Keep whenever you have the Glimpse to spare. Glimpse is also used to unlock the Auspicious Stone Tarstone from the offering chest in Mushroom Village — check our guide on how to open the chest in Mushroom Village to grab it early, as the melee crit boost pairs well with Tiel’s Shadow Strike.
Do Shells Affect What Weapons You Can Use?
No. All Shells can use every weapon and Sidearm in the game. Your Shell choice only affects your stats and abilities, not your gear pool. This means you can run Tiel with the Great Martyr’s Blade or Eredrim with the Axe & Dagger if you want to. There are no restrictions.
This also means you can plan your build around a weapon and then choose the Shell whose abilities complement it best. Tiel plus the Axe & Dagger is a natural crit-focused build. Proxima plus a heavier weapon leans into sustained aggression. Eredrim plus a slow weapon that staggers maximizes the Break and Riposte loop.
For a full breakdown of what weapons pair well with each playstyle, see our best weapons for beginners in Mortal Shell 2 guide. And if you want to get the most out of your upgrades, understanding how the Tarforge works and which permanent items to prioritise early will make a real difference.
Final Thoughts
For most beginners, the answer is simple: grab Tiel first. He is right next to your starting area, requires no boss fight to unlock, and his invisibility makes the early game significantly less punishing. From there, pick up Proxima on the way north and you will have two strong early Shells to rotate between.
Eredrim is worth the extra effort for players who want a tankier, more deliberate experience. The boss fight to unlock him is a bit tougher, but he is one of the best choices for learning difficult bosses once you have him.
Take your time learning each Shell. Do not rush to upgrade everything at once. Focus on one or two Shells, bond them up, and use the right Shell for the right situation.
