You Can Now Play BioShock in Co-Op Thanks to a New PC Mod

    • A new fan-made mod called BioShock Together brings two-player co-op to BioShock Remastered on Steam — including the entire campaign from start to finish.
    • The mod was developed by a solo modder, VoidCrownStudios, and is available as a free download on Nexus Mods.
    • It supports both local and online co-op, with a friend marker to track your partner’s position across Rapture.
    • VoidCrownStudios has confirmed the full campaign has been completed in co-op during testing — but the mod is currently in Alpha, and bugs are expected.
    • Known issues include erratic enemy syncing, cutscene glitches, and moments where a partner’s character model may render as a Splicer.
    • The mod requires BioShock Remastered on Steam (Windows) and has no impact on your single-player save.

Nearly two decades after BioShock first dropped players into the underwater ruins of Rapture alone, someone has finally done what 2K never did and added co-op. A solo modder going by VoidCrownStudios has released BioShock Together on Nexus Mods — an alpha co-op mod for BioShock Remastered that lets two players run through the entire original campaign together. It’s rough around the edges, it’s in alpha, and it’s exactly the kind of thing the modding community does best.

    What Is BioShock Together?

BioShock Together is a fan-made co-op mod for BioShock Remastered on Steam, built by a single developer working solo. Released on October 9, 2026, it adds genuine two-player cooperative multiplayer to a game that was never designed for it — and crucially, this isn’t a custom survival map or a separate mode bolted on the side. Both players exist in the same world and play through the original BioShock campaign together, from the plane crash opening to the final encounter.

The mod supports both local co-op and online multiplayer, meaning you can play side-by-side on the same machine or team up with a friend over the internet. A friend marker tracks your co-op partner’s position in the world so you can always find each other. Both players inhabit the same game space, which means opening doors, triggering events, and fighting enemies happens in a shared environment rather than in parallel instances.

VoidCrownStudios has confirmed that the full campaign has been completed in co-op during development testing — which is the most important technical proof that the mod is genuinely functional. The modder noted the entire campaign was played “from start to finish” with actual character models and synchronized world interactions. That’s a meaningful milestone for a solo project that required reverse-engineering a game never built around multiple players.

How to Install and Play It

The mod requires BioShock Remastered on Steam (Windows only). Once installed, players press INSERT to open the co-op overlay. The player hosting the session enters the command truehost to start the co-op server, and their partner connects from there. The mod is available as a free download directly from Nexus Mods on the BioShock page.

One important note from VoidCrownStudios: the mod should be compatible with your existing save file — you don’t need to start a new game to use it — but given the alpha state, starting fresh or having a backup of your saves before experimenting is wise.

Known Issues — This Is Alpha, Plan Accordingly

VoidCrownStudios has been upfront that BioShock Together is an alpha release and players should expect bugs. The most notable known issues include:

    • Erratic enemy syncing — enemies don’t always behave consistently for both players simultaneously
    • Cutscene glitches — scripted sequences weren’t built for two players and can behave unexpectedly
    • Partner model rendering as a Splicer — in some situations your co-op partner may appear as an enemy rather than their actual character model
    • Synchronisation pauses between levels — if players end up in different areas, co-op sync temporarily halts until both are in the same location

None of these are dealbreakers for people who understand they’re playing an alpha modding project, but they’re worth knowing before you set expectations with your co-op partner. The fact that the full campaign is completable in this state is genuinely impressive for a solo modding effort — it just won’t be a polished experience throughout.

The Context — Why This Matters

BioShock is one of the most celebrated single-player games ever made, and the tension and isolation of Rapture was always a core part of what made it work. Playing it solo at 2 a.m. with headphones on is the intended experience, and nobody is arguing otherwise. But the fact that co-op was never an option — even officially — has been a recurring discussion point in the BioShock community since the original 2007 release.

BioShock 2 actually had a dedicated multiplayer mode, developed separately by Digital Extremes, set as a prequel to the events of the first game. That mode was eventually delisted from Steam for years before being restored, and it was generally considered a decent-but-separate experience from the campaign. BioShock Infinite had co-op modes in development that were cut before release. The franchise has always circled the idea of multiplayer without fully committing to it, which makes a fan-built solution for the original game all the more interesting.

The trend of single-player classics getting fan co-op mods has been accelerating. In recent months alone, co-op mods have been created for Yakuza 0, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Resident Evil 4 Remake, STALKER: Call of Pripyat, and — dropping at the same time as BioShock Together — a local splitscreen co-op mod for Resident Evil 2 Remake. Halo: Campaign Evolved even had its co-op enabled through modding earlier this year. It’s a genuinely exciting era for modding, where the gap between “single-player classic” and “game I can play with a friend” is being closed one passion project at a time.

If you’re a BioShock fan and you’ve always wanted to experience Rapture with someone else, BioShock Together is worth downloading and giving a go — just go in with your expectations calibrated to alpha software, not a finished product. The mod is free, requires only the Steam version of BioShock Remastered, and is actively being developed with updates planned as VoidCrownStudios continues work on it.

For the rest of this week’s PC gaming news, the RTX 5090 discontinuation report is the biggest hardware story right now and worth reading if you’re shopping for high-end GPUs. And if you want something free and fun to play while keeping an eye on your GPU budget, the Car Parking Multiplayer 2 Steam launch is still pulling in strong reviews and costs absolutely nothing to download. For something on the AI-in-gaming side of things, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii’s 30-minute AI-built mystery game is worth a look as a fascinating experiment from one of the medium’s veterans.
