Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown DLC Revealed — Naval Combat, Underwater Diving, Romance, and Out October 15

Pearl Abyss has had a remarkable 2026. Crimson Desert launched in March as a brand new IP, cleared 6 million copies sold within 83 days, and has been receiving major updates at a pace that other studios would take years to match. And it’s not done yet. During the September 3 PlayStation State of Play, the studio officially revealed Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown — the game’s first paid DLC, landing on October 15, 2026.

Here’s everything revealed, everything teased in the trailer, and what we know about the bigger picture for Crimson Desert’s future.

    What Is Charting the Unknown?

Charting the Unknown is a story expansion that takes the trio of Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane deeper into the continent of Pywel. The official press release describes the premise simply: “The story of Pywel continues in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown as Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane set out to discover their purpose and shape their futures. However, as turmoil unfolds around them, each must fight to forge a path through the trials ahead. Join them on a new adventure and discover what new possibilities await across Pywel.”

The specifics of the story remain under wraps — Pearl Abyss hasn’t shared a narrative breakdown alongside today’s announcement — but the trailer gave a very clear picture of the new gameplay systems the DLC introduces, and they’re substantial.

What Did the Trailer Actually Show?

The near two-minute State of Play trailer was light on dialogue and heavy on gameplay demonstration. Here’s what was clearly visible:

    Naval Combat and Ships

A significant portion of the trailer focused on ship-based naval gameplay, with Kliff captaining a vessel across open water. The combat shown had strong echoes of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag’s naval engagements — cannons, close-quarters boarding sequences, and open ocean traversal. This appears to be an entirely new gameplay layer added to the existing world of Pywel, suggesting Charting the Unknown is pushing the game’s scope into oceanic territory.

Underwater Diving and a Shark Companion

The most visually striking sequence in the trailer: Kliff diving underwater and riding a shark to navigate below the surface. Underwater environments reveal enormous mechanical creatures lurking in the depths — new boss-tier enemies designed specifically for this aquatic space. The diving suit (Charter’s Diving Set) shown in the trailer is confirmed as the pre-order bonus, suggesting this is a core activity rather than a brief gimmick. Game Informer noted this makes Charting the Unknown “a maritime adventure” at its heart.

    Homesteading and House-Building

The trailer prominently featured player housing and homestead construction — a system that appears significantly deeper than anything currently in the base game. NPCs were shown cooking at the homestead, implying you can direct companions to prepare food on your behalf. The level of customisation shown in brief glimpses suggests this is being positioned as a major quality-of-life system for players who want a persistent base in Pywel, something like The Sims levels of domestic management within an open-world RPG context.

    Romance and Relationships

What appeared to be a marriage proposal sequence was visible in the trailer, suggesting Charting the Unknown introduces a deeper relationship and romance system for the characters. Combined with the homesteading features, the DLC appears to be adding an entire layer of domestic and social gameplay alongside the maritime action content. Pearl Abyss hasn’t officially confirmed specifics on this system, but the trailer imagery was fairly unambiguous.

    New Story Missions and Bosses

The trailer teased several large, visually distinctive boss encounters — both underwater and on land — suggesting a substantial amount of new combat content alongside the new systems. New regions of Pywel beyond the current map boundaries appear to be part of the DLC’s scope as well.

    Price, Platforms, and Pre-Order Details

    • Release date: October 15, 2026
    • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC (Steam and Epic Games Store)
    • Price: $24.99 USD / £19.99 GBP

    • Charter’s Diving Set — for Kliff and Oongka
    • Charter’s Light Diving Set — for Damiane

Both diving sets are thematically tied to the underwater gameplay introduced in the DLC.

    The Context — Crimson Desert’s Remarkable 2026

To appreciate how quickly Charting the Unknown has arrived, it helps to understand the pace Pearl Abyss has maintained since March. Crimson Desert launched on March 19, 2026 with a Metacritic score of 78 — Generally Favorable, but notably split, with some outlets scoring it as high as 9.5/10 and others as low as 6/10. Despite the divided critical reception, player response was strong: over 2 million copies sold on launch day alone, reaching 6 million within 83 days.

Since launch, the studio has delivered 17 major updates — including story patches, new skills, cross-save support, localisations in multiple new languages, and a full overhaul of how characters earn and equip skills. The Enhanced Edition (patch 2.00) dropped just before the DLC announcement, bundling all of those improvements alongside new additions. The speed of Pearl Abyss’s post-launch support has been one of the more impressive development stories of 2026 — a pace built on experience from years of maintaining Black Desert Online, their long-running MMO.

What Comes After Charting the Unknown

Charting the Unknown is explicitly positioned as the first DLC in a larger post-launch plan. Pearl Abyss has confirmed several significant developments in shareholder meetings and earnings calls this year:

    • Nintendo Switch 2 version: In development, currently in a basic playable state. Pearl Abyss is targeting a first-half 2027 release but says performance optimization to meet quality standards is still ongoing
    • Multiplayer modes: Under active research. Pearl Abyss described it as a “major technical initiative” requiring evaluation of server architecture, game balance, and live-service models — not confirmed, but far more openly discussed than before
    • Sequel potential: Pearl Abyss has explicitly framed Crimson Desert as a “core flagship IP” open to sequels and further platform expansion, ruling out mobile as a near-term option
    • Revenue: The game generated approximately $178.8 million in its first quarter and $136.3 million in Q2 — around $275 million across the first six months, representing roughly 70% of Pearl Abyss’s total company revenue

Forbes’ Paul Tassi, who has closely covered the game’s post-launch trajectory, noted that for a new IP to perform at this level — and to sustain a development pace of 17 major updates in six months — points to Pearl Abyss treating Crimson Desert as a long-term platform rather than a one-and-done title. Charting the Unknown arriving in the same calendar year as the base game launch is, as Tassi wrote, “impressive, but perhaps not unexpected” given the studio’s MMO development background.

October 15 is six weeks away. October is already shaping up as one of the most crowded release months of 2026, and Charting the Unknown is going to be competing for attention in a packed field. But for the 6 million players who already own Crimson Desert, a $24.99 expansion with naval combat, underwater exploration, homesteading, and what appears to be romance mechanics is likely an easy sell. Big gaming experiences are stacking up across Q4 2026 and into 2027, and Pearl Abyss is making sure Crimson Desert has a seat at the table through all of it.
