    FF7 Revelation

Square Enix showed up to PlayStation’s September 3 State of Play with two genuinely exciting Final Fantasy announcements — and both of them deserve your full attention. The big one: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the trilogy-closing conclusion to one of gaming’s most ambitious remake projects, finally has a locked-in release date. The surprise: Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix’s first HD-2D Final Fantasy, has a playable demo available to download right now.

Here’s the full breakdown of both.

    Final Fantasy 7 Revelation — April 8, 2027

After years of “spring 2027” as the only date fans had to go on, director Naoki Hamaguchi took the State of Play stage and delivered the news the Final Fantasy community has been waiting for: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches worldwide on April 8, 2027.

More significantly, it launches on all platforms simultaneously — PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. This is a first for the FF7 Remake trilogy. Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched as a PS4/PS5 exclusive for a full year before coming to PC. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched on PS5 exclusively for five months before its PC release. Revelation breaks that pattern entirely — every platform gets it on the same day, same time, worldwide. For Xbox and PC players who’ve been waiting through two exclusivity windows, April 8 can’t come fast enough.

Pre-orders are now live. Players who have save data from Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and/or Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on their console or PC will unlock special bonuses in Revelation, including the FFVII Rebirth Weapon Skin Set. Square Enix also confirmed that a FF7 Remake Trilogy Edition featuring all three games is available for pre-order, and a Final Fantasy VII Remake Series Complete Edition bundle is up in Japan covering all three games on Switch 2 and PS5 for 77,777 yen.

What Did the New Trailer Show?

The State of Play gameplay trailer opened with Hamaguchi confirming the date before diving into an extended look at the game itself. Key highlights from the footage:

    • The Highwind: Cid’s iconic airship is fully controllable in Revelation, allowing players to travel between regions of the world map. You can parachute directly from the ship onto the map — a first for the trilogy and a mechanic that signals just how different the scale of this final chapter will be
    • World map scope: Revelation is described as the biggest game in the trilogy by far, including all locations from Remake and Rebirth alongside new original areas. It’s structurally “the final disc” of the original FF7, scaled accordingly
    • FITS system (Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear): A new equipment mechanic allowing playable characters to equip special gear that alters their appearance and grants new abilities drawn from classic Final Fantasy job classes — Warrior, Black Mage, and others
    • Returning features: Chocobo riding and the Queen’s Blood card game from FF7 Rebirth are both confirmed to return
    • Returning characters: Characters from the FF7 compilation appear, with Cissnei confirmed returning after her Rebirth appearance
    • Story DLC confirmed: Square Enix confirmed story DLC content is planned for Revelation post-launch

What Is Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s Story?

For players who need a refresher: Revelation is the third and final part of a trilogy that began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake (2020) and continued with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (2024). The series retells the story of the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII with expanded content, richer characterisation, and significant narrative deviations from the original game.

In Revelation, Cloud and the party finally catch up to Sephiroth as the group races to prevent Meteor — the apocalyptic magic he’s summoned — from destroying the planet. Complicating matters further, the existential threat has activated the planet’s own defense mechanisms: ancient entities called Weapons that exist to protect the planet at all costs — and who don’t necessarily distinguish between the humans causing the threat and those trying to stop it.

The trilogy has sold over 10 million copies combined across Remake and Rebirth, with both games earning over 140 perfect review scores and multiple Game of the Year awards. The pressure on Revelation to deliver a satisfying conclusion is considerable — and the simultaneous worldwide multi-platform launch suggests Square Enix has enough confidence in the product to remove the exclusivity safety net entirely.

Final Fantasy Resonance Demo — Available Right Now

The second major Square Enix announcement from State of Play is more immediately actionable: the demo for Final Fantasy Resonance — the first Final Fantasy game built in Square Enix’s HD-2D graphical style — is available to download right now on all platforms.

The demo weighs in at approximately 4.8GB and covers the entire first chapter of the game, representing roughly three to five hours of gameplay. And — following the Square Enix tradition established by Octopath Traveller 2, Triangle Strategy, and others — save data from the demo carries over to the full game. So any progress you make in the demo is not wasted.

    What Is Final Fantasy Resonance?

Final Fantasy Resonance is an adaptation of the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, now reimagined as a premium HD-2D console RPG. It was built on the concept: “What if Final Fantasy had continued to push the limits of pixel art?”

The game is set in the world of Lapis and follows Rain, a knight commander of Grandshelt, his adoptive brother Lasswell, and the mysterious maiden Fina, as they work to protect the world’s eight elemental Crystals from being destroyed by Veritas of the Dark and the Sworn Six of Paladia. The State of Play trailer also confirmed that Sephiroth — in his Final Fantasy 7 Remake series version — appears in Resonance as well, which sent the community immediately buzzing.

    The game features:

    • An evolved turn-based combat system with a Resonance mechanic that triggers powerful abilities and AoE effects through party coordination
    • An accessible take on the classic job system — not a high-difficulty game, comparable to the normal difficulty of Octopath Traveller
    • Powerful summons called espers that fight alongside the party for three turns before delivering a finishing move
    • Iconic Final Fantasy staples: chocobos, airships, Crystals, and cutscenes rendered in a cutting-edge pixel-based cinematic style using 3DCG rendered as pixel art

The project is being developed by Team Asano — the acclaimed group behind the Octopath Traveller series, Triangle Strategy, and Bravely Default — which immediately positions it among the most pedigree HD-2D releases Square Enix has ever produced. Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Two Very Different Final Fantasy Experiences

What’s notable about today’s double announcement is how different these two games are from each other — and how that difference covers essentially every type of Final Fantasy fan.

Revelation is the conclusion to the most ambitious action-RPG Final Fantasy has attempted: cinematic, real-time with commands, built on the combat DNA of Remake and Rebirth’s six years of iteration. It’s the prestige tent-pole title, the trilogy closer, the game carrying the weight of one of gaming’s most beloved stories to its conclusion.

Resonance is something else — a love letter to classic Final Fantasy delivered through Team Asano’s mastery of the HD-2D aesthetic. Turn-based, crystal-focused, fundamentally nostalgic in its DNA while being technically impressive in execution. For fans who felt left behind by Final Fantasy 16’s more action-focused direction, Resonance is being positioned as the palette cleanser.

Both are dropping within six months of each other — Resonance in October 2026, Revelation in April 2027. Square Enix has had a complicated 2026 from a corporate perspective, but its games output for this window looks genuinely strong. October 2026 is already one of gaming’s most crowded months, and Resonance will be competing for attention in a packed field — which makes the demo a smart move. Let players experience three to five hours of the game, carry their save over, and remove the biggest barrier to purchase entirely.

The Final Fantasy Resonance demo is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches April 8, 2027, simultaneously on all platforms. Start clearing your schedule.
