It’s only been a year since Ghost of Yōtei launched, and Sucker Punch is already delivering one of the year’s most exciting PlayStation reveals. During the PlayStation State of Play on September 3, 2026, the studio pulled back the curtain on Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted — and buried the lead perfectly. Yes, it’s a roguelike survival mode. Yes, it has a Perks system and bounty hunting and escalating difficulty. But the thing that sent the community into orbit is simpler than all of that: Jin Sakai is back.
The Ghost of Tsushima himself, playable for the first time since 2020, is officially joining Ghost of Yōtei’s October 1 content drop as the fourth playable character in Most Wanted. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted?
Most Wanted is Sucker Punch’s take on a roguelike, built entirely around Ghost of Yōtei’s core combat systems. The mode is structured around bounty hunts — you select a target from a board, fight through waves of enemies and minibosses, collect coins from defeated enemies, and spend those coins on upgrades and perks as you progress through each run. Die, and you start the run over. Complete a bounty, and harder versions of that same target become available, with difficulty escalating all the way up to the hardest run — a showdown against Lord Saito.
At the heart of each run is the Perks system. As you fight your way through a run, you’ll regularly be presented with a choice between new perks covering weapon mastery, gear loadouts, summons, parry abilities, survivability upgrades, and more. Mixing and matching perks is how you build the run — and according to Sucker Punch’s Andrew Goldfarb on the PlayStation Blog, the joy of the mode comes from finding unexpected synergies between perk combinations, including ones that add significant challenge as well as ones that make you feel unstoppable.
“It was important to us to make Most Wanted feel like an extension of Ghost of Yōtei’s core combat systems,” Goldfarb wrote. “We want playing through runs to take the familiar weapons and systems you’re used to and turn them into a fresh experience that lets you experiment with characters and builds to find the loadout that works best for you.”
All Four Playable Characters Explained
Each of the four characters brings a distinct combat style and starting loadout to Most Wanted:
- Atsu — Ghost of Yōtei’s protagonist, wielding dual katanas with her signature aggressive, fluid style
- Oyuki — uses a kunai with chain (kusarigama) alongside smoke-based powers, built for mobility and misdirection
- Nagato — a newly introduced character arriving in Ezo from Atsu’s past; a heavy weapon specialist who wields a yari alongside a sword and hammer, and can deal devastating critical bow shots
- Jin Sakai — the Ghost himself, wielding the Sakai family katana with all four fighting stances from Ghost of Tsushima, starting with a Sticky Bomb and Hankyu, with Dance of Wrath as his Ultimate and Ghost Stance as his Kill Streak
Nagato is the character most players won’t have met yet — he’s a figure from Atsu’s past who arrives in Ezo as part of the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion’s storyline. His appearance in Most Wanted alongside Jin, Atsu, and Oyuki means the mode effectively serves as a preview of the expansion’s most significant new character.
Jin Sakai — What He Brings Back
Sucker Punch was careful and specific about how Jin was handled. Rather than treating him as a costume on top of another character’s moveset, the team “took his Ghost of Tsushima model and kept it faithful while also applying upgrades for Ghost of Yōtei.” He’s been graphically updated to match Yōtei’s visual fidelity — he now bears scars and updated hair reflecting the passage of time since 2020 — while remaining unmistakably the Jin fans know.
His combat identity is built around the full Ghost of Tsushima toolkit:
- All four original stances (Stone, Water, Wind, Moon) for exploiting different enemy weaknesses
- Sticky Bombs as a starting ranged tool
- Hankyu shortbow as his secondary ranged weapon
- Dance of Wrath — his Ultimate ability, targeting multiple enemies and disarming them simultaneously, drawn directly from Ghost of Tsushima’s skill tree
- Ghost Stance — his Kill Streak, allowing him to terrify surrounding enemies and eliminate a limited number of them in a single strike
For longtime Ghost of Tsushima fans, this is exactly the fantasy the announcement delivers: taking Jin into a new environment, against new enemy types, with his full arsenal intact. The four-stance system alone adds a layer of strategic depth to Most Wanted that none of the other characters replicate — switching stances mid-combat in response to different enemy types was one of Ghost of Tsushima’s most satisfying mechanics, and bringing it forward into Yōtei’s combat system creates something genuinely new.
Echoes of Sekigahara — The Story Expansion
Jin’s return is the headline, but the other major content in Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition is the narrative expansion Echoes of Sekigahara, which tells a structurally different kind of story from the base game. The expansion alternates between two timelines:
In the present-day timeline, Atsu investigates a previously unknown valley that was once controlled by The Snake and his devoted followers, the Vipers — a faction that has never been encountered before in the main game. New enemies, new locations, and new threats await in this corner of Ezo.
In historical flashback sequences, players re-experience Atsu’s involvement in the Battle of Sekigahara — the famous 1600 conflict that determined the future of Japan — and explore a pivotal moment in her life before she returned home to begin her revenge quest. Nagato, the new character introduced in Most Wanted, is central to these flashback events.
The expansion adds new heavy weapons, armor sets, dyes, and equipment alongside the narrative content. New trophies are also being added for both Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted separately.
Pricing, Editions, and What’s Free
Here’s the complete breakdown of how to access the new content:
- Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition (New Players): $69.99 — includes the base game, Ghost of Yōtei Legends (online co-op mode), previously released Digital Deluxe Edition content, Echoes of Sekigahara, and Most Wanted
- Complete Edition Upgrade (Existing Owners): $14.99 — adds Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted, plus any Deluxe content not already on the account
- Free for All Existing Owners (via Patch v.2.0 on October 1): Beauty of Yōtei screensaver mode, new Watanabe Mode music tracks, armor appearance customization across the game, new high-contrast accessibility options, and new Photo Mode stamps
One notable pre-order bonus: anyone who purchases the Complete Edition Upgrade before September 30, 2026 will receive an early unlock of the Sakai Armor for Atsu on October 1 — a direct nod to Jin’s family armor from Ghost of Tsushima. It’s a thoughtful crossover detail that connects Atsu’s Ezo to Jin’s Tsushima without forcing a narrative connection between the two characters.
Ghost of Yōtei has now sold over 3.3 million copies since its October 2025 launch — a milestone Sony confirmed publicly. The Complete Edition arriving at the one-year mark follows exactly the playbook Sucker Punch used with Ghost of Tsushima’s Director’s Cut in 2021, and the $14.99 upgrade price for existing owners is reasonable for what amounts to a story expansion and an entirely new game mode.
PlayStation’s Roguelike DLC Tradition Is Now a Pattern
Game Informer noted in their coverage that this has become something of a PlayStation first-party tradition. The Last of Us Part II got its own roguelike survival mode. God of War: Ragnarök received the story expansion Valhalla with roguelike elements. And now Ghost of Yōtei joins the lineup with Most Wanted. It’s a post-launch content structure that works — build the combat systems in the main game, then design a mode that pushes those systems to their limit in a run-based framework that rewards mastery and experimentation.
For a game like Ghost of Yōtei, where combat is the centrepiece of the experience and player skill with stances, tools, and timing defines the moment-to-moment feel, a roguelike mode is a natural fit. October is shaping up to be one of the most packed gaming months of 2026, with Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition joining a very crowded launch calendar — but Jin Sakai’s return is exactly the kind of announcement that cuts through the noise.
Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted and Echoes of Sekigahara both launch via Patch v.2.0 on October 1, 2026 globally, and October 2 in some territories including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. An internet connection and PlayStation account are required to download the update. It’s a big week for gaming announcements, and Sucker Punch just made sure Ghost of Yōtei’s second act is impossible to ignore.
