TL;DR
- The Crypt Key is found at Desolate Peak in the western part of Fainweald — on a wooden table inside the ruined building near Baghead.
- To reach Desolate Peak, follow the path from the Citadel of Penance south and use the stone archway jump-off point past the Bloodcursed Lithopod.
- The key opens the Hall of Echoes dungeon in northeastern Fainweald — between the Grisha Hunting Grounds and Stones of Remembrance.
- No Beacon is close to the Hall of Echoes door, so plan your route on foot from the Blackridge Pass Beacon.
- Completing the dungeon gives you a Winterglass Gem, Dorsalite, and the Sheephead Totem.
The Crypt Key is one of those items in Mortal Shell 2 that trips up a lot of players. The item description only says it “opens a door within a dungeon.” That is it. No map marker. No pointer. The key itself sits all the way on the western side of Fainweald, while the door it unlocks is on the opposite end in the northeast. If you did not already know that, you could wander for a long time without connecting the two.
This guide covers exactly where to find the Crypt Key, how to reach the Hall of Echoes, and what you get for completing the dungeon inside. Before diving in, if you are still getting your footing in the early game, our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide has all the basics covered.
What Is the Crypt Key in Mortal Shell 2
The Crypt Key is a single-use key item. It unlocks the entrance to the Hall of Echoes, a hidden dungeon in northeastern Fainweald. You pick it up in one part of the map and use it in a completely different part. The game does not connect these two locations for you, which is why so many players miss it or get confused about where it goes.
The dungeon itself is optional but worth doing. It holds useful upgrade materials and a unique consumable item that you cannot get many other ways.
Crypt Key Location in Mortal Shell 2
The Crypt Key is located in the Desolate Peak area, in the western reaches of Fainweald. You will find it sitting on a wooden table inside the ruined building near Baghead — right next to the entrance to the Illusionist’s Cache dungeon. It is easy to walk straight past if you are focused on Baghead or the dungeon entrance rather than the interior of the building.
Baghead is a returning character from the original Mortal Shell. He sits outside the building and has a request for you. Completing his quest is not required to pick up the Crypt Key — just go into the building and take it off the table. There is also a Tattered Note nearby that gives a hint about what Baghead wants from you.
How to Reach Desolate Peak
There are two routes to Desolate Peak. Most players will find Route 1 more natural during a normal playthrough.

Route 1 – From the Citadel of Penance (Recommended)
- Start at the Citadel of Penance
- Follow the sloping road downward toward the lower cliffside section
- Continue past the area where you encounter the Bloodcursed Lithopod — the giant stone crab-like miniboss
- Just past that fight, you will find a stone archway that acts as a teleporting jump-off point
- Walk through the archway — it teleports you across the large gap ahead
- You are now on Desolate Peak
- Cross the wooden suspension bridge to reach the peninsula where Baghead is
- Enter the ruined building and pick up the Crypt Key from the wooden table inside
Route 2 – From Widow’s Overlook via the Northern Bone Gate
- Start at the Widow’s Overlook Beacon
- Head north then circle around west
- Take the Bone Gate south of the Citadel of Penance
- This also brings you to Desolate Peak
Route 1 is faster once you have cleared that area. Route 2 is useful if you have not yet reached the Citadel of Penance or want to approach from a different angle.
Where to Use the Crypt Key – Hall of Echoes Location
Once you have the Crypt Key, you need to travel to the northeastern part of Fainweald to use it. The Hall of Echoes dungeon entrance is inside a locked tower located between the Grisha Hunting Grounds and the Stones of Remembrance, just south of the Grisha Hunting Grounds dungeon.
There is no Beacon close to the Hall of Echoes door, which makes this trip a bit awkward. You will need to walk there on foot from the nearest fast travel point.
Best Route to the Hall of Echoes
- Fast travel to the Blackridge Pass Beacon — this is the closest useful starting point
- Head northeast to the Shattered Beacon (the same area where you unlock the Proxima shell)
- Turn east and clear or navigate past any corruption blocking the path
- Continue through the Stones of Remembrance area
- Look for the isolated locked tower in the hilly section south of the Grisha Hunting Grounds
- Interact with the door and select “Yes” to use the Crypt Key
- Descend the stairs inside to enter the Hall of Echoes
The tower is easy to miss because there is no obvious marker and no nearby Beacon to guide you toward it. If you are struggling to spot it, search the uphill area in that section — it is a stone building with a large wooden door on a locked entrance.
Hall of Echoes Dungeon Walkthrough
The Hall of Echoes is not a long dungeon, but it has one puzzle to solve before you reach the rewards. Here is how to get through it.
Step 1 – Enter and Clear the First Room
Head down the lift at the entrance. Deal with the enemies at the bottom. Strike the wall on your left at the end of the corridor to reveal a hidden path.
Step 2 – Find the Hidden Paths
In the next area, strike the wall to the left of the floor switch to open another hidden passage. Deal with the enemies near the Gloom Tree in this section. You can also pick up a Laterite from this area, so do not skip it.
Step 3 – Solve the Pressure Plate Puzzle
Return to the floor panel and stand on it. Look into the room that opens — you will see a bell. Shoot the bell and it will create a path leading to a stone statue in the room. Push the stone statue onto the pressure plate. Once it is correctly positioned, the mechanism activates and a hidden door opens.
Step 4 – Collect the Rewards
The room behind the door holds all three rewards. Collect everything before you leave:
- Winterglass Gem — found in the chest. Sell this to Merrick at Marrow Keep for 1,000 Coins.
- Dorsalite — interact with the bone chair that has the skeletal imprint. This is a crafting material used at the Tarforge to upgrade your primary weapons and sidearms.
- Sheephead Totem — kill the sheep standing in the room. This unique consumable temporarily turns you into a sheep, making you undetectable by enemies. It also has a passive effect that reduces enemies’ maximum health by a small percentage.
Step 5 – Exit the Dungeon
Once you have picked up all three items, interact with the white light in the room. This teleports you back to the dungeon entrance and marks the Hall of Echoes as complete on your map.
Is the Hall of Echoes Worth Doing
Yes. The Dorsalite alone makes it worth the trip. Dorsalite is a weapon upgrade material used at the Tarforge, and getting extra copies early speeds up your weapon progression considerably. The Winterglass Gem sells for 1,000 Coins, which is useful for buying items or upgrading gear at the Tarforge. The Sheephead Totem is niche but fun, and can be genuinely useful for bypassing dangerous enemy groups when you need to explore without fighting.

Tips Before You Go
- Activate nearby Beacons before heading to the Hall of Echoes. There is no Beacon right next to the dungeon door. Cleansing the Shattered Beacon puts you closer and saves a long run if something goes wrong.
- Cleanse the corruption east of the Shattered Beacon. Clearing it opens a much more direct path through the Stones of Remembrance toward the dungeon.
- Do not rush past Baghead. He has a questline tied to the building you collect the Crypt Key from. His rewards are separate from the key, but worth coming back for once you know what he needs.
- Do not skip the Laterite in the dungeon during the puzzle section — it is sitting near the Gloom Tree and easy to miss while you are focused on the floor switches.
- Sell the Winterglass Gem to Merrick at Marrow Keep rather than hanging onto it. It has no upgrade use and converts to 1,000 Coins immediately.
While you are working through the Fainweald area, it is also a good time to make sure you are leveled up properly. Our guide on how to farm Gloom fast in Mortal Shell 2 covers the best spots in the region so you are not underleveled when you go after tougher content.
