How Mods Work in Gears of War E-Day

Mods are new to the Gears of War campaign. E-Day is the first game in the series to let you slot mods directly onto your weapons during a playthrough.

There are three categories of mods in E-Day: Weapon Mods, Armor Mods, and Tactical Gear Mods. Each one works differently and is equipped in a different place.

Weapon Mods attach to individual weapons. Each weapon has up to four slots. You equip them at Supply Cache points in the campaign, or through your Loadout screen in Horde Siege.

Armor Mods affect your character directly. They give passive bonuses like improved health regen, execution buffs, or reload rewards. You equip them under the Gear tab in the Classes menu.

Tactical Gear Mods improve your active abilities — things like the Sonic Disruptor or Adrenaline Injector. These are also equipped under the Gear tab.

Unlocking and owning a mod are two separate things. You reach the required level on a class track to unlock it, but you then need to purchase it with Weapon Parts before you can use it.

Want to know how to get more mod slots faster? Check our Gears of War E-Day how to unlock more weapon mod slots guide.

How to Unlock Mods in Gears of War E-Day

There are two main ways to get mods in Gears of War E-Day:

    • Hard Cases in the campaign — These are hidden containers scattered across chapters. Opening one gives you weapon mods, mod slots, or both. Act 1 has no Hard Cases with mod slots, so expect to work with one slot per weapon until Act 2.
    • Secondary objectives in the campaign — Completing optional side tasks like rescuing trapped units or defending civilians rewards you with Hard Cases that contain mods. See all locations in our Gears of War E-Day secondary objective locations guide.
    • Horde Siege class progression — Every class has a 30-level track. As you level up, you unlock new weapons, mods, and extra mod slots. Each class levels up separately.

All Weapon Mods in Gears of War E-Day

Weapon Mods slot into one of nine types: Barrel, Stock, Magazine, Scope, Body, Ammo, Fire Mode, Perfect Reload, and Misc. Each type fills a specific slot on your weapon.

Here is every confirmed weapon mod, sorted by type:

    Barrel Mods

Barrel mods improve accuracy, damage range, and critical hits. These are usually the first mods worth prioritising.

    • Forged Barrel — Increased accuracy and damage range. Works on most weapons. One of the best general-purpose mods in the game.
    • Precision Rifling — Increased critical damage and accuracy. Best for rifles where you are landing headshots.
    • Precision Long Barrel — Increased critical damage and accuracy. Shots also pass through multiple targets. Best mod on the Longshot and Breechshot.

    Stock Mods

Stock mods improve your stability, recoil control, and accuracy in specific situations — like firing from cover or aiming for extended periods.

    • Active Compensator — Grants steadily increasing accuracy over time during sustained fire. Good for LMGs and assault rifles.
    • Cover Brace — Greatly improved accuracy when firing from cover. Essential for the Assault class.
    • Long Range Stabilizer — Increased aimed accuracy and reduced aimed recoil. Best paired with sniper and precision rifles.
    • Aim Stabilizer — Increased accuracy when aiming. A reliable all-round stock option for sidearms.

    Magazine Mods

Magazine mods affect ammo capacity and how fast you reload. These are useful for any class that fires frequently or needs to stay in the fight longer.

    • Extended Magazine — Increased magazine capacity. Straightforward but very useful on weapons with small mags.
    • Cut Magwell — Greatly increased reload speed. Pairs well with the Hammerburst or any fast-firing weapon.
    • Springloaded Mag — Faster magazine load speed. Good for medium-fire-rate weapons where reload timing matters.
    • Overpacked Mag — On a Perfect Reload, grants a full magazine with unlimited ammo for a very short window. High-risk, high-reward.

    Scope Mods

Scope mods add or adjust zoom levels and how fast you can aim down sights.

    • Holo Sight — Adds a light zoom for mid-range targeting. Fast aim speed. Good on rifles and sidearms.
    • Combat Scope — A mid-range optic suited for rifles like the Hammerburst.
    • Marksman Scope — Lightweight scope with 3x single magnification zoom. Fast aim speed. Best on the Longshot.
    • Slick Breech — Greatly increased reload speed. Fills the scope slot on the Gnasher and Breechshot.

    Body Mods

Body mods reduce disruption while you are shooting — things like flinch, sway, and aim shake.

    • Composite Chassis — Reduced flinch and sway while aimed or scoped. Good when enemies are shooting back at you.
    • Skeleton Frame — Improved aim speed, swap speed, and faster movement while aiming. Best on the Gnasher for aggressive plays.

    Ammo Mods

Ammo mods change the type of damage your weapon deals or add special effects on hit.

    • Concussion Ammo — Each shot builds stun on enemies when you land a Perfect Reload. Excellent on the Snub sidearm for the Assault class.
    • Twinned Ammo — Each round fired counts as two hits. Works well on LMGs and high-volume weapons like the Ripper.
    • Detonator Ammo (Longshot) — Special ammo type unique to the Longshot. Adds explosive impact on certain shots.
    • Concussion Rounds (Carter’s Signature Gut-Puncher) — A signature mod exclusive to Carter’s Gut-Puncher variant.

    Fire Mode Mods

Fire mode mods change how your weapon fires — useful for adjusting the rhythm of burst or semi-auto weapons.

    • Semi Auto — Changes the Lancer or other rifles to semi-automatic fire. Rewards accurate shooting over spray.
    • Headhunter Burst — Changes the Hammerburst’s burst timing to reward headshots. Best aggressive mod for the Hammerburst.
    • Spreadshot Burst — Changes burst behaviour for a wider spread. Useful in close-range situations on burst rifles.
    • Double-Tap Burst — Adds a quicker follow-up burst on the Snub. Good on the sidearm when you need to put out fast damage.
    • Full Auto — Switches weapons like the Gnasher from pump-action to a fully automatic pattern.

    Perfect Reload Mods

Perfect Reload mods activate when you land a Perfect Reload — hitting the active reload window at just the right moment. These mods reward accuracy and timing.

    • Full Metal Jacket — Perfect Reloads grant Perfect Ammo with increased damage. The best general Perfect Reload mod and one of the best mods in the game overall. Works on almost every weapon.
    • Overpacked Mag — Perfect Reloads grant a full Perfect Magazine with unlimited ammo for a very short duration. High upside but requires consistent Perfect Reloads.

    Misc Mods

Misc mods add features that do not fit into other categories — things like targeting aids or execution bonuses.

    • Laser — Adds a visible dot reticle when you are not aiming down sights. Helps track your aim in hectic situations.
    • Chainsaw Autoloader — Every Chainsaw execution refills your magazine. Keeps the Prototype Lancer loaded during heavy combat. Great for the Assault class.
    • Gas Regulator — Reduces the Ripper’s heat build-up during sustained fire. Lets you keep shooting longer without overheating.
    • Bayonet — Adds a bayonet melee option to the Gnasher. Replaces the standard melee with a faster, dedicated stab attack.

Best Weapon Mods to Prioritise First

If you are just starting out and have limited slots, focus on these mods first. They work well on almost any weapon and any class:

    • Full Metal Jacket — This is the best mod in the game. It rewards every Perfect Reload with increased damage. Slot it first on whatever weapon you use most.
    • Forged Barrel — Adds accuracy and damage range with no downside. Goes on everything.
    • Cover Brace — If you play from cover (and you should), this gives you a massive accuracy boost that fires constantly during normal play.
    • Precision Rifling — Great on burst rifles like the Hammerburst. Stacks with headshot bonuses.
    • Concussion Ammo (Snub) — Feeds stun into your Sonic Disruptor loop and opens up Armor Mods like Fish in a Barrel and Perfect Stunner.

For a full collectible hunt that gives you more mods early, see our Gears of War E-Day Act 1 collectibles guide.

Where to Find Mods in the Campaign

The campaign has two reliable sources for mods and mod slots:

Hard Cases are the main source. They are hidden containers spread across chapters — mostly from Act 2 onwards. Opening one gives you mod slots, mods, or both. The second chapter of Act 2 has several early ones near the Bank of Tyrus construction site and the Octus Tribunal area.

Secondary objectives also reward mods. These are optional tasks you find during each chapter. Rescuing stranded COG units or defending civilians triggers these, and completing them hands you a Hard Case with mods inside. See all locations in our secondary objective locations guide.

Act 1 has no Hard Cases that give mod slots. You will work with one slot per weapon for the entire opening act, so use it wisely. The first extra slots arrive in Act 2 Chapter 2.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many mods can you equip per weapon in Gears of War E-Day?

What are the best weapon mods in Gears of War E-Day?

Full Metal Jacket, Forged Barrel, Cover Brace, and Precision Rifling are the best mods to prioritise early. Full Metal Jacket is the standout — it rewards every Perfect Reload with a damage boost and works on every weapon.

Do weapon mods carry over from the campaign to Horde Siege?

Yes. Mods unlocked during the campaign carry into Horde Siege. Any mods you earn through Hard Cases and secondary objectives are available in your Horde Siege loadout.

How do you equip mods in the Gears of War E-Day campaign?

In the campaign, you equip mods at Supply Cache points — green equipment cases found throughout each chapter. These let you swap weapons, change mods, and refill ammo at the same time.

What are Armor Mods in Gears of War E-Day?

Armor Mods are passive character bonuses that activate during combat. Examples include Muscle Memory (larger Active Reload window), Executioner (executions heal you), and Flesh Wounds (improved health regen). Can you buy weapon mods in Gears of War E-Day?

Yes. After unlocking a mod on a class progression track, you purchase it using Weapon Parts. Unlocking and buying are two separate steps. Weapon Parts come from Secondary Objectives, COG Resupplies, and other mission activities in Horde Siege.
