Gears of War E Day Review

Gears of War: E-Day is finally here after seven years since the last mainline entry. The Coalition and People Can Fly took us back to the very beginning — Emergence Day. The day the Locust first burst from the ground and changed everything. After playing through it, one thing is clear: this is the shot in the arm the franchise has needed for years.

Reviews are in, and critics are calling it the best Gears game in over a decade. But does it hold up for both longtime fans and newcomers? Let’s break it all down.

    • TL;DR: E-Day is the highest-rated Gears game since the original trilogy
    • Metacritic score sits at 86–89 across platforms (Xbox Series X and PC)
    • The campaign takes 10–14+ hours to complete across 5 acts and 26 chapters
    • New movement system, weapon mods, and Horde Siege mode shake up the formula
    • The story is dark, brutal, and emotional — but some critics felt the plot was safe
    • Available on Xbox Series X|S and PC — built on Unreal Engine 5

What Is Gears of War: E-Day?

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. The story takes place in the city of Kalona on Emergence Day — the moment the Locust Horde erupted from underground and launched a genocidal invasion of humanity’s surface world.

You play as a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, joined by Bravo Squad members Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. The entire campaign takes place over three frantic days and nights as Kalona is torn apart around you.

This is the sixth main entry in the Gears franchise. It was developed by The Coalition and co-developed by People Can Fly, the team behind the original Gears trilogy. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and is exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Gears of War: E-Day Story and Setting

The story begins just after the end of the Pendulum Wars. For the first time in decades, Sera was at peace. Marcus and Dom were veterans thinking about a life outside the military. Then the ground broke open.

What follows is a campaign told in three emotional phases. The opening night is pure chaos and terror. Civilians are dragged underground. Buildings collapse in real time. Emergency sirens blare across Kalona. Seeing the city get torn apart from the inside is genuinely harrowing.

As the story progresses, it becomes more personal. Dom worries about his family in Ephyra. Marcus carries the weight of being seen as a war hero while questioning his own choices. The Chainsaw Lancer even gets its own origin story — kit-bashed together from a prototype right there on the battlefield.

The original voice actors John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro return as Marcus and Dom. The chemistry between them feels natural and lived-in. Their friendship is the emotional backbone of the whole game.

Most reviewers praised the story’s tone. It’s darker and more personal than recent Gears entries. However, a handful of critics pointed out the plot plays it safe — especially for players who already know where Marcus and Dom’s story ends up. GameSpot noted that the narrative feels written more for newcomers than for long-time fans who have followed the lore across all five previous games.

Gears of War: E-Day Campaign Gameplay Review

The campaign is the heart of E-Day, and it delivers. The structure blends classic linear combat with semi-open sections of Kalona that let you explore, find collectibles, and complete optional side missions. Think of it as a smarter version of what Gears 5 tried with its open maps — but this time the city actually feels alive and full of things worth doing.

The campaign spans 5 Acts and 26 chapters, plus a prologue and epilogue. Expect to spend around 10 to 14 hours on a normal playthrough. Go for full completion and you’re looking at 14 hours or more.

The Coalition says it’s the longest campaign the studio has ever built — longer than both Gears 4 and Gears 5. In co-op, you can bring the full four-person Bravo Squad online, or play two-player split-screen on Xbox consoles.

If you’re planning co-op sessions or want to know the full storage requirements before jumping in, check out our guide on the Gears of War: E-Day file size and storage requirements.

New Movement System — The Biggest Change to Gears in Years

The biggest mechanical change in E-Day is the completely rebuilt movement system. This is the most significant overhaul since Gears of War 3, and it makes a massive difference.

The cover button has moved to the A button. Sprinting is now left-stick click. Vaulting and jumping are on Y. The result? You move faster, smoother, and with much more freedom than any previous Gears game.

There’s now a jump that adds real verticality to fights. You can climb up vehicles and ledges to get the high ground. There’s a slide mechanic that flows naturally into cover. And the classic Gears weight and feel is still there — characters still feel heavy and grounded, not floaty like a Fortnite crossover character.

The cover system also got improvements. You can now move between standing cover, crouching cover, and crawling cover without breaking the flow. Some cover can even be destroyed by enemies during a fight, which forces you to keep moving and think on the fly.

Multiple critics called the movement the standout improvement. For a look at how E-Day’s wall-bouncing mechanics specifically changed the meta, read our breakdown of the Gears of War: E-Day wall bouncing movement debate.

Weapon Mods and the New Upgrade System

E-Day adds a proper weapon modification system to a Gears campaign for the first time. Throughout the campaign, you’ll find Hard Cases scattered across levels that contain weapon mods. Side missions also reward mods when you complete them.

Each weapon has multiple mod slots and a surprising number of perks to choose from. Armor mods can make you harder to kill behind cover. One mod heals you when you pull off a Perfect Reload. Tactical Gear adds another layer of customization on top.

The system never tips into full RPG territory. It stays lean and meaningful. It gives every player a reason to explore the semi-open sections of Kalona instead of rushing through the story, and it lets co-op squads build different loadouts that complement each other.

Previous Gears games had you grab whatever weapon you found and move on. E-Day makes you actually think about your build. It’s a smart addition.

Gears of War: E-Day Visuals and Technical Performance

Built from scratch on Unreal Engine 5 with Nanite and Lumen, E-Day is one of the best-looking games on Xbox Series X right now. The lighting in Kalona is stunning. City detail is immaculate. Character work and facial animations are top-shelf.

Seeing the city crumble in real time during the opening hours is genuinely jaw-dropping. Small environmental details — a child’s toy, an uneaten dinner — make the loss feel real. The environment tells the story in ways that earlier Gears games, where you were always walking through ruins after the fact, couldn’t manage.

On Xbox Series X, performance mode targets 60 FPS. The game holds it well during most of the campaign and versus multiplayer. Horde Siege is more demanding and can see dips during dense enemy encounters. On Xbox Series S, internal resolutions are lower to hit the same targets.

On PC, DLSS support from NVIDIA brings strong performance. Ray tracing is available but most competitive players disable it for multiplayer to maintain higher frame rates.

WCCFTech noted that while the visuals are among the best seen in a UE5 game, overall performance sits slightly below some other well-optimized UE5 titles. A single crash was rarely reported, and split-screen co-op on console is genuinely impressive from a technical standpoint given how much is on screen.

Multiplayer — Versus and Horde Siege

Multiplayer was locked behind an embargo for most reviewers until launch, so full scores reflect campaign-only testing. That said, early access impressions are positive.

Versus is 4v4 competitive PvP. The new movement system gives it the freshest feel of any Gears multiplayer since Gears 3. The redesigned control scheme, combined with faster vaulting and sliding, creates more dynamic engagements and gives skilled players more tools to express themselves.

Horde Siege is the brand-new 12-player co-op mode. Three four-player squads drop into Kalona simultaneously and must defend it from escalating Locust waves. Squads can operate across different parts of the map at the same time, opening up coordination possibilities that older Horde modes never had. At launch there are three Horde Siege maps and four Versus maps (six total across modes).

What Critics Are Saying — Review Scores Roundup

Gears of War: E-Day has a Metacritic score of 86 on Xbox Series X and 83 on PC based on full reviews (with some still in progress pending full multiplayer testing). OpenCritic rates it at 88 average with 92% of critics recommending it. That makes it the highest-rated Gears game since Gears of War 3 in 2011.

    • TechRaptor — 9.5/10: “The best game in the series. The story gives an up-close look at E-Day, providing a horror-filled and harrowing experience.”
    • TrueAchievements — 9/10: “Hits all the right notes for veteran Gears and newcomers alike.”
    • Game Rant — 9/10: “An exciting campaign with jaw-dropping visuals and classic Gears cover-based gameplay elevated by the new movement system.”
    • Tom’s Guide — 4.5/5: “The must-own Xbox exclusive of 2026.”
    • WCCFTech — 7.4/10: “Best third-person cover shooter on the market, but the narrative is a step back from Gears 5.”
    • GameSpot — 7/10: “If you only intend to play the campaign, it has been stunningly mediocre.”

The general consensus: the gameplay is the best Gears has ever felt, the visuals are stunning, and the tone is exactly right. The only real split in opinion is around the story — some found it a moving origin story for Marcus and Dom, others felt it didn’t push the lore in any surprising direction.

What We Liked About Gears of War: E-Day

    • Best movement in the franchise — jumping, sliding, and vaulting transform combat
    • Weapon mods add real depth without making the game feel like an RPG
    • Stunning visuals on UE5 — some of the best lighting and detail on any console game
    • Marcus and Dom are back — great voice acting, great chemistry, great character work
    • Kalona is a great setting — a living, breathing city that collapses around you in real time
    • Horde Siege feels fresh — 12-player co-op is the mode Gears fans have been waiting for
    • Split-screen co-op on console — rare to see in 2026 and much appreciated
    • Longest Gears campaign The Coalition has ever made

    What Could Be Better

    • Story feels safe — veterans who know the lore won’t be shocked by much
    • Some side quests feel thin — not all optional content is equally rewarding
    • Horde Siege performance dips — demanding mode on Series S especially
    • Yank-and-shank and chainsaw duels removed — some fans will miss these signature mechanics
    • Certain story dialogue felt cheesy to a few reviewers

Gears of War: E-Day — Verdict

Gears of War: E-Day is the best Gears game in over a decade. Full stop. The movement overhaul alone makes it feel new again, and everything around it — the visuals, the atmosphere, the weapon mods, the co-op — supports that foundation.

Is it a perfect game? No. The story plays it safe. Some side content doesn’t stick the landing. But the core loop of Gears — cover, shoot, chainsaw — has never felt this sharp or this fun.

If you are a returning fan, this will remind you why you fell in love with the series. If you have never played Gears before, this is the best possible place to start. Either way, it is easily one of the best Xbox exclusives in years and a strong contender for one of 2026’s best games overall.

Before you jump in, make sure to grab the right hardware. The Gears of War: E-Day Xbox Limited Edition controller is a great pick for playing in style.
