    Key Takeaways

    • Sensor Tower data shows GTA 6 is 148% ahead of Modern Warfare 2 (2022) in US digital preorders at the same point before launch.
    • As of October 13, GTA 6 has been preordered 6.08 million times in the US digitally, generating an estimated $594 million in revenue.
    • By October 20, those numbers had already climbed to 6.45 million preorders and roughly $630 million — meaning hundreds of thousands of new preorders dropped in just one week.
    • 74% of preorders are on PlayStation and 26% on Xbox, though Xbox has disputed reports of a lopsided split.
    • A staggering 89% of all preorders are for the $100 Ultimate Edition — completely flipping the usual industry trend.
    • GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading opens a week earlier on November 12.
    • First-year sales predictions from analysts range from 30 million to over 50 million copies.

We’ve known for a while that GTA 6 was going to be massive. But “massive” doesn’t quite cover what Sensor Tower’s latest data is showing. The analytics firm has been tracking digital preorder performance across some of the biggest AAA launches of the past six years, and when you line GTA 6 up against them, the gap is almost hard to believe. This isn’t just a big launch — it’s looking like a once-in-a-generation commercial event that’s already rewriting the record books before a single copy has been sold at launch.

How GTA 6 Stacks Up Against the Biggest Games of Recent Years

Sensor Tower pulled together preorder data for some genuine juggernauts — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Diablo 4 (2023), Hogwarts Legacy (2023), and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023). These aren’t small games. Modern Warfare 2 had one of the biggest opening weekends in gaming history, pulling in $800 million in its first weekend alone. At 45 days from launch, Modern Warfare 2 had more than double the preorders of Diablo 4, which tells you just how dominant that CoD release was in its time.

GTA 6 is 148% ahead of Modern Warfare 2 right now at the equivalent point before launch. Just let that number breathe for a second. The game that beat everything else in 2022 by double digits is itself now being lapped — by nearly one and a half times — by Rockstar’s upcoming open-world title. Nothing in the comparison group is close. Not Spider-Man 2, not Hogwarts Legacy, not Diablo 4.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that this analysis only covers digital preorders in the United States. Physical copies aren’t counted. International markets aren’t counted. The actual global picture is almost certainly even bigger than what Sensor Tower is able to track here.

The Numbers: $630 Million Before a Single Copy Ships

As of October 13, Sensor Tower estimated GTA 6 had been preordered 6.08 million times in the US market, with an estimated revenue of $594 million. That’s already a landmark figure for a game that hasn’t launched yet.

But here’s the wild part — by October 20, just one week later, those numbers had already moved to approximately 6.45 million preorders and around $630 million in revenue. That’s roughly 370,000 additional preorders and $36 million added in a single week, and GTA 6 is still a month away from launch on November 19. Sensor Tower’s own analysts have noted that the biggest surge in preorders for any major title typically comes in the final week or two before release, so these numbers have a lot of room to run.

For context, Sensor Tower analyst Karl Kontus has projected that GTA 6 could reach around 25 million preorders by launch day — which, factoring in the pricing, would put pre-launch revenue somewhere in the range of $2 billion before the game is even reviewed.

PlayStation vs Xbox: The Platform Split

According to Sensor Tower’s October 13 snapshot, 74% of GTA 6 digital preorders are on PlayStation and 26% are on Xbox Series X|S. That works out to roughly 4.8 million preorders on PS5 and about 1.66 million on Xbox, contributing an estimated $468 million and $162 million respectively.

The split has stirred up some noise. Xbox’s chief strategy officer Matthew Ball pushed back on reports that called it “heavily skewed toward PS5,” stating that Xbox’s internal figures show their share of preorders matching their share of the console market overall. PlayStation 5 has sold more than 90 million units since launch versus just over 30 million for Xbox Series X|S, so a 74/26 split could arguably be viewed as proportional to the install base difference rather than an indicator of platform preference. Still, when GTA 6 is showing up as the number one best-selling title on the PlayStation Store in virtually every region simultaneously — from the US to India and Japan — it’s hard not to notice which side has the momentum.

The Ultimate Edition Is Doing Something Extraordinary

One of the most interesting data points out of this entire report is the edition breakdown. GTA 6 has two options: a Standard Edition at $80 and an Ultimate Edition at $100. Across virtually every AAA game released in the past decade, the premium edition makes up somewhere between 10-20% of total preorders. That’s just how it usually works — most players take the base game and move on.

Not with GTA 6. Sensor Tower estimates that 89% of all preorders placed so far are for the $100 Ultimate Edition. The $80 Standard Edition is barely getting a look in. This is a complete inversion of typical consumer behaviour, and it’s almost certainly why the revenue numbers look so outsized relative to unit counts. People aren’t just preordering GTA 6 — they’re committing to the top tier without hesitation, which says everything about the level of confidence and hype surrounding this release.

Is This the Biggest Launch in Gaming History?

Multiple analysts and industry watchers are now framing GTA 6 as the biggest launch in the history of the games industry. Earlier this year, GamesIndustry.biz surveyed a range of analysts for their first-year sales predictions, and the estimates landed between 30 million and over 50 million copies sold. Analytics firm Newzoo has projected that GTA 6 could bring in a minimum of $3.3 billion in its first week alone, with the ceiling potentially reaching $5.2 billion depending on how the launch surge plays out.

It’s also worth noting that GTA 6 is launching without a PC version in 2026, and without its online mode at release — GTA Online is expected to arrive separately in December 2026 or early 2027. The fact that these numbers are being achieved on console only, without the game’s biggest long-term revenue driver, makes the preorder trajectory even more jaw-dropping.

GTA 5 took three days to hit $1 billion in sales back in 2013. If the projections land even in the middle of the range, GTA 6 could be doing that before most people have even made it past the opening hour of the game.

    What Happens Next

Pre-loading opens on November 12, 2026 — one week before launch — and analysts expect that date to produce the biggest single spike in preorders since the game went live for purchase back in June. After the Netflix Extended Look in August alone produced a 500% jump in preorder activity over two days, there’s real evidence that GTA 6’s numbers respond sharply to any new content or promotional push.

November 19 is shaping up to be unlike any game launch we’ve seen. Sensor Tower’s data gives us a live window into how unprecedented the demand already is — and if the pattern holds, the numbers on launch day are going to be something that gets talked about for years.
