GTA 6 PS5 Pre-Orders Are Outselling Xbox 6 to 1 — Here’s Why the Gap Is This Big

Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders went live on June 25 and the early sales split between platforms is staggering. According to a report from IGN, the PS5 version of GTA 6 is outselling the Xbox Series X|S version by a 6:1 ratio in early pre-order data. That’s not a small gap — that’s one platform absolutely dominating the other on what should be the biggest multiplatform release of the generation. The numbers are likely driven primarily by retail pre-orders rather than digital, but either way, it paints a clear picture of where GTA 6 buyers are concentrated.

Why the PS5 Version Is So Far Ahead

A 6:1 ratio sounds shocking on the surface, but it makes more sense when you look at the underlying factors that have been building for years.

The most straightforward reason is installed base. PS5 has significantly outsold Xbox Series X|S since both launched in November 2020. Circana’s May 2026 data showed PS5 holding a substantial lead in total units sold in the US despite recent sales struggles, and globally the gap is even wider. More PS5s in homes means more potential GTA 6 buyers on that platform — it’s the most basic explanation and probably the most significant one.

The GTA franchise’s historical platform affinity also plays a role. GTA has always sold strongly on PlayStation going back to the PS1 era. GTA 5 launched as a timed PS3/Xbox 360 exclusive before expanding, and Sony has historically had a closer marketing relationship with the franchise. The “plays best on PS5” campaign Sony ran ahead of pre-orders — highlighting DualSense haptic feedback, Tempest 3D audio, and PS5 Pro enhancements — reinforced that perception right at the moment pre-orders went live. Consumers were being actively told by Sony that PS5 was the premier destination for GTA 6 just days before the buy button appeared.

The Xbox hardware situation adds another layer. Xbox Series X|S prices went up significantly in 2026, with another round of increases taking effect on August 1. Circana’s May report showed Xbox recording its worst May sales ever in terms of units — meaning the total pool of Xbox Series X|S owners buying new games right now is smaller than it’s ever been at this point in a console generation. Fewer Xbox owners in the market means fewer Xbox GTA 6 pre-orders, regardless of how good the game looks on the platform.

There’s also the question of Xbox’s shifting identity. With Microsoft’s games increasingly available on PC via Xbox Game Pass and the Microsoft Store, some players who might have bought an Xbox Series X specifically for GTA 6 may instead be waiting to play it on PC — or simply already have a PS5 and are defaulting to that. Xbox’s multiplatform strategy, while good for accessibility, arguably dilutes the urgency of console-specific pre-orders.

What a 6:1 Split Actually Means in Practice

It’s worth being precise about what this data represents. IGN’s report is based on early pre-order data, which is likely weighted toward physical retail purchases rather than digital. Digital pre-orders — which tend to skew toward existing platform loyalists on both sides — may show a slightly different ratio, though probably not dramatically different given the installed base gap.

Early pre-order ratios also don’t always hold through launch. PS5 buyers tend to pre-order earlier and in higher volumes at physical retail, while a portion of Xbox buyers may wait for closer to release or go digital on launch day. By the time November 19 arrives, the ratio may narrow somewhat — but a gap of this magnitude this early in the pre-order window is significant regardless of how much it closes.

For Rockstar, the ratio doesn’t change the commercial picture much — a sale is a sale regardless of platform, and GTA 6 is going to break records on both. But for Microsoft, a 6:1 pre-order deficit on the generation’s most anticipated game is another data point in a difficult year for Xbox hardware.

Sony’s “Plays Best on PS5” Campaign May Have Made a Real Difference

The timing of Sony’s PlayStation Blog post confirming GTA 6’s DualSense, PS5 Pro, and Tempest 3D audio features is worth noting here. That post went live on June 24, the day before pre-orders opened. It was the last major piece of marketing consumers saw before they were asked to make a purchasing decision, and it explicitly positioned PS5 as the superior version of the game.

For an undecided buyer who owns both platforms or is choosing between them, that messaging — coming directly from Sony and Rockstar’s marketing partnership — is exactly the kind of nudge that shifts purchase decisions. The 6:1 ratio likely reflects both the underlying platform popularity gap and the effect of targeted last-minute Sony marketing pushing hesitant buyers toward PS5.
