TL;DR
- There are two types of corruption in Mortal Shell 2 — corrupted Beacons and corrupted growths blocking paths in the overworld.
- Cleanse a Beacon by entering its dungeon, clearing the enemies inside, and interacting with the Beacon at the end.
- Cleansing Beacons rewards Ova, Glimpse, coins, and useful items depending on the Beacon.
- Corrupted Gate Beacons give 3 Ova each. End-of-dungeon Beacons after major bosses give 26 Ova.
- Once you collect and siphon at least 5 Ova at Marrow Keep, you unlock Mether’s Breath.
- Mether’s Breath lets you remove corrupted growths blocking paths in the open world — and also unlocks fast travel.
- Some sources say 7 Ova are needed for full corruption-clearing ability — cleanse early Beacons consistently to reach that threshold faster.

How to Cleanse Corruption in Mortal Shell 2
Corruption is everywhere in Mortal Shell 2. It wraps around Beacons, blocks passageways with thick vines and tendrils, and generally makes exploring the world of Fallgrim harder than it needs to be. Understanding how to remove it — and in what order — is one of the most important things to grasp in the early game.
There are two distinct forms of corruption you will encounter. The first is on Beacons themselves, which you cleanse through dungeon runs. The second is the corrupted growths that physically block paths in the open world, which you can only remove after reaching a specific milestone. This guide covers both, step by step.
If you are still getting started and want a broader overview of early priorities, check our Mortal Shell 2 Beginner’s Guide. Also, once you start clearing areas, you will want to know how to get and use the Chapel Key in Mushroom Village, which leads to one of the best early weapons in the game.

What Is Corruption in Mortal Shell 2?
Corruption in Mortal Shell 2 takes two forms:
Beacon Corruption — When you first discover a Beacon in the open world, it is shrouded in dark overgrowth. In this state, you can rest at it and set your respawn point, but nothing else. Cleansing it unlocks the full Beacon functionality and rewards you with Ova and other items.
Overworld Corruption — Corrupted vines, tendrils, and growths physically block pathways, doorways, and chest areas throughout Fainweald and the Ruins of Mammon. You cannot remove these by hand. They require a specific ability — Mether’s Breath — which you earn by siphoning Ova at Marrow Keep.
Both types matter. Corrupted Beacons gate off rewards and dungeon content. Corrupted growths gate off entire areas of the open world, including Beacons, shells, and weapons you cannot access without clearing them.
How to Cleanse Beacons in Mortal Shell 2
Cleansing a Beacon is simple in concept but can be tough in practice depending on what is inside.
Step 1 — Find and Activate the Beacon
When you discover a Beacon in the world, interact with it to set your respawn point. The Beacon will glow and the area around it becomes your active checkpoint. At this stage it is corrupted — you can rest here, but that is all.
Step 2 — Enter the Beacon’s Dungeon
When you interact with a corrupted Beacon, you will see an option to enter or cleanse it. Selecting this drops you into a small dungeon beneath the Beacon. These dungeons vary in size and difficulty. Some are compact rooms with a handful of enemies. Others lead to multi-room challenges with a miniboss or full boss at the end.
Fight through the dungeon and reach the far end. Along the way you will often find chests, Ventrium, coins, and other useful materials tucked into side rooms — always explore fully before pushing to the final room.
Step 3 — Cleanse the Inner Beacon
At the end of the dungeon, you will find the inner Beacon. Interact with it to cleanse it. This completes the process and exits you back to the open world. The Beacon is now fully active, and you will have earned your rewards.
Step 4 — Rest and Collect Your Rewards
After cleansing, rest at the Beacon to recover your health, resolve, and flask charges. Check your inventory — new items and Ova will be waiting. Note that resting causes regular enemies in the world to respawn, so plan around that if you are mid-exploration.
What Do You Get From Cleansing Beacons?
Every cleansed Beacon gives something. The rewards vary by location and type:
- Standard open-world Beacons — typically reward 1 Ova, 1 Glimpse, some coins, and occasionally a Tarstone or consumable item. For example, cleansing the Blackridge Pass Beacon rewards 650 coins, 1 Glimpse, and 1 Ova. The Mushroom Village Beacon rewards the Emberseed Stone, 1 Glimpse, and 1 Ova.
- Corrupted Gate Beacons — the Beacons that sit directly in front of major dungeon gates reward around 3 Ova each. Cleansing them also opens the gate to the Corrupted Gate dungeon inside.
- End-of-dungeon Beacons — the Beacons that appear after defeating a major boss inside a Corrupted Gate dungeon reward 26 Ova each. These are the biggest single Ova sources in the game and are essential for campaign progression.
- Loot obstructions removed — cleansing some Beacons also clears corrupted growth that was blocking nearby chests or item pickups in the surrounding area, giving you access to loot you could not reach before.
Not every Beacon can be cleansed. Some function only as fast travel checkpoints with no dungeon attached. These are still worth tagging for navigation, but they will not reward Ova or items.
What Are Ova and Why Do They Matter?
Ova are the glowing eggs of the UnderMether — the central creature driving the game’s story. Collecting and returning them to Marrow Keep is the main campaign objective in Mortal Shell 2. As you accumulate and siphon Ova in the Ova Chamber at Marrow Keep, you unlock progression milestones, including the ability to enter new areas and eventually the final dungeon.
The most critical early milestone is siphoning enough Ova to unlock Mether’s Breath — the power that lets you clear corrupted growths in the open world. This is explained in detail below.
How to Remove Corrupted Growths in Mortal Shell 2
Corrupted vines and tendrils block dozens of paths across Fainweald and the Ruins of Mammon. You will see them draped over doorways, coiled around chests, and clogging passages early in the game. You cannot remove them on arrival — you need to earn the right to clear them.
Step 1 — Collect at Least 5 Ova
Ova come from cleansing Beacons across the open world. Each standard Beacon gives 1 Ova, Corrupted Gate Beacons give around 3, and end-of-boss Beacons give 26. After completing the prologue and reaching Marrow Keep for the first time, start cleansing every Beacon you find in Fainweald. Target the Blackridge Pass, Mushroom Village, and Mushroom Village Gate Beacons as your first priorities — they are close to the starting area and easy to reach.
Step 2 — Return to Marrow Keep and Siphon the Ova
Once you have collected enough Ova, return to Marrow Keep — your central hub. Head to the Ova Chamber and interact with the siphoning machine. This processes the Ova you have gathered and applies them toward your campaign milestones. Siphoning at least 5 Ova here — some sources indicate 7 for full capability — triggers the next step.
Step 3 — Unlock Mether’s Breath
After siphoning the required number of Ova, you receive Mether’s Breath. This is a permanent power — not a consumable. It does two things simultaneously:
- It lets you fast travel between any Beacons you have discovered and tagged.
- It lets you remove corrupted growths in the open world by approaching and interacting with them.
You can use Mether’s Breath from your inventory at any point in the open world to return to Marrow Keep instantly — though this costs all the Gloom you are currently holding, so use it wisely when you have a large amount saved up.
Step 4 — Remove Corrupted Growths Across the World
With Mether’s Breath active, go back to all the blocked passages you found earlier and clear them. Approach each growth and interact with it to remove it. Once cleared, the path opens permanently — it does not grow back.
Some of the most important corrupted growths to clear early:
- North of Mushroom Village Entrance Beacon — clearing this opens the path to the One-Legged Wolf Beacon and tavern area, where you can get the Troubadour’s Lute and start the Gragu shell questline.
- Stones of Remembrance graveyard (northernmost growth) — clearing this lets you cross the chasm via the bone gate and reach the Stonebled Gate Beacon further north in Fainweald.
- Trial altar area between Mushroom Village and Mushroom Village Gate — a growth here blocks a chest surrounded by Toxic Cultists. Removing it reveals more loot and gives access to the One-Legged Wolf Beacon route.
In the Ruins of Mammon, corrupted growths similarly block routes to Beacons and shells that become available as you push deeper into the region.
Types of Corrupted Gate Dungeons in Mortal Shell 2
The most significant corruption-related content in Mortal Shell 2 is the six Corrupted Gates — major dungeon entrances sealed by corruption. Cleansing the Beacon in front of each gate opens it and lets you tackle the dungeon inside.
The six Corrupted Gate dungeons are:
- Glutted Mire — Fainweald (first recommended dungeon)
- Sanguine Caverns — Fainweald
- Prisoners’ Domain — Fainweald (far southwest)
- Conquered Temple — Ruins of Mammon
- Withered Shoals — Ruins of Mammon
- Faded Citadel — Ruins of Mammon
Each dungeon ends with a major boss. Defeating the boss spawns a new Beacon inside the dungeon, which holds 26 Ova when cleansed. You need to complete at least 5 of the 6 Corrupted Gate dungeons to unlock the game’s final area — the Unfound Path.
Tips for Cleansing Corruption Efficiently
- Cleanse every Beacon you find, even small ones. The Ova accumulate faster than you expect, and you want to hit the siphoning threshold for Mether’s Breath as early as possible. Skipping Beacons early means missing out on areas locked behind corrupted growths.
- Return to Marrow Keep regularly. Do not hold onto large stacks of Ova in the field. Siphon them at the Ova Chamber every few Beacons to keep your Gloom and abilities updated.
- Mark corrupted growth locations as you find them. When you first see a blocked path you cannot clear yet, mentally note or screenshot it. Once Mether’s Breath is active, you can go back and systematically open everything instead of wandering.
- Corrupted Gate Beacons are the priority. If you are trying to push campaign progress, focus on cleansing the Beacons directly in front of Corrupted Gates first. They give more Ova than standard Beacons and open the major content of each region.
- Cleansing removes nearby loot obstructions too. When you cleanse a Beacon, check the surrounding area immediately. Some Beacons have corrupted growths right next to them that also clear, revealing nearby chests you could not loot before.
- Use Mether’s Breath for fast travel, not just corruption clearing. It is easy to forget the fast travel half of what Mether’s Breath does. Once unlocked, you no longer need to walk back across the map — use Beacons to jump around and clear old areas you bypassed.
Ending Note
Cleansing corruption in Mortal Shell 2 is not just a mechanical task — it is the main loop of the game. Every Beacon you cleanse brings you closer to Mether’s Breath. Every corrupted growth you remove opens more of Fallgrim. And every Corrupted Gate dungeon you complete pushes you toward the ending.
Start by cleansing every standard Beacon in Fainweald, return to Marrow Keep to siphon your Ova, unlock Mether’s Breath, and then go back and open all the paths you could not access before. After that, tackle the Corrupted Gates in whatever order feels right.
