What Is the Creaking in Minecraft

The Creaking is a hostile mob that spawns exclusively in the Pale Garden biome at night. It looks like a twisted, wooden puppet and blends into the pale oak trees around it. Look for its three glowing orange eyes to spot it in the dark.

Here is what makes it unique:

It freezes completely when you look at it. As long as the Creaking is in your field of view, it cannot move or attack.
The moment you look away, it moves fast. It closes the gap between you quickly — faster than a Vindicator.
It is invulnerable to all direct attacks. Hitting it with any weapon, tool, or even your fist does zero damage.
It is controlled by the Creaking Heart — a block hidden inside a nearby pale oak tree. Destroy the Heart and the Creaking dies instantly.
It disappears at dawn. If you wait until morning, it despawns on its own.

The Creaking deals 2.5 hearts of damage on Easy, 3 hearts on Normal, and 4 hearts on Hard. Not huge damage on its own, but when multiple Creakings surround you and you cannot watch them all at once, it gets dangerous fast.

Step 1 — Keep your eyes on it

As soon as you spot a Creaking, do not look away. Keep it centred on your screen. While it is in your field of view, it cannot move. This gives you time to think and plan your next move without panicking.

Note: wearing a carved pumpkin as a helmet removes this protection. The Creaking can still move even while you are looking at it if you wear one. Avoid that.

Step 2 — Hit the Creaking once

While staring at it to keep it frozen, hit it with any weapon or tool. This does not deal damage — but it triggers two things:

A trail of orange and grey particles appears, flowing from the Creaking in the direction of its Creaking Heart.
Resin clumps start to appear on pale oak logs near the Heart, giving you a second visual clue.

Hit it a few times to make the particle trail more obvious. There is a five-second cooldown between resin drops, so a couple of hits is enough to get a clear read on the direction.

The particles move from the Creaking toward its Heart. Follow them while keeping an eye behind you. The Heart is hidden inside a pale oak tree nearby, always surrounded by pale oak logs on all sides. You will need to break a few blocks to uncover it.

Look for bright orange resin clumps on the ground and on nearby logs — they cluster around the tree containing the Heart and make it much easier to narrow down the right tree.

Step 4 — Find the Creaking Heart block

The Creaking Heart looks like a pale oak log with an orange marking running through the centre. It does not glow strongly, so it can be easy to miss in the dark. Break the surrounding pale oak logs until you expose it.

The Heart is always tucked inside the tree trunk, so you need to dig in a few blocks. Bring an axe — it breaks wood fastest.

Step 5 — Destroy the Creaking Heart

Once you find it, break it with your axe. The moment the Heart is destroyed, the Creaking linked to it dies instantly. It breaks apart in a cool collapse animation.

If there are multiple Creakings in the biome, each one has its own separate Heart. You need to repeat this process for each one.

How to Collect the Creaking Heart with Silk Touch

If you want to keep the Creaking Heart instead of destroying it, use an axe enchanted with Silk Touch. This lets you pick up the Heart block intact. Once the Heart is removed, its linked Creaking disappears immediately.

You can then place the Heart between two pale oak log blocks stacked vertically at home to activate it and have your own Creaking spawn at night. It makes for a genuinely terrifying base defence. Just make sure you are ready to deal with it when darkness falls.
