Uprooted — its default state. The core appears dark. It is not placed between two pale oak logs and is completely inactive.
Dormant — it is properly placed between two pale oak logs but it is daytime. The core appears brighter but no Creaking spawns.
Awake — it is placed between two pale oak logs and it is night. The core glows orange. A Creaking spawns and is active.

The Heart shifts between dormant and awake automatically based on the day-night cycle. You do not need to do anything once it is properly placed.

Where to Find the Creaking Heart

Creaking Hearts only generate naturally inside pale oak trees in the Pale Garden biome. Not every pale oak tree has one. Only certain trees in the wild contain a Heart, and you cannot find one by growing a tree from a sapling with bone meal — those trees never produce a Heart.

How to spot it

During the day, look for a pale oak log with an orange marking across the middle. It is subtle and can be easy to miss among the grey trees.
At night, the Heart glows orange when active. It is easier to see — but much more dangerous to approach because the Creaking will be nearby.
If a Creaking is chasing you, hit it once. This triggers a trail of orange and grey particles that flow from the Creaking toward its Heart. Follow the trail to find the tree.
Look for bright resin clumps on nearby pale oak logs — these cluster around the tree containing the Heart and give you a second visual clue.

The Heart is always surrounded by pale oak logs, so you need to break a few blocks to expose it. Bring an axe — it is the fastest tool for wood blocks and the most efficient for breaking the Heart itself.

How to Collect the Creaking Heart

This is where most players go wrong. Breaking the Creaking Heart without Silk Touch does not drop the block. Instead it drops 1–3 resin clumps. Fortune increases this — Fortune III can yield up to 6 resin clumps. You also get 20–24 XP for breaking a naturally generated Heart in Survival mode.

To collect the Heart as a block, you must use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. An axe with Silk Touch is the best choice since it breaks wood fastest. Once you mine it with Silk Touch, the Heart drops as a collectible item and the Creaking linked to it dies immediately.

There is one extra rule to note. Breaking the Heart at night while a Creaking is active does not drop the block — it simply destroys it. If you want to collect it, break it during the daytime when the Heart is dormant. How to Activate the Creaking Heart

Once you have a Creaking Heart — either collected with Silk Touch or crafted — activating it is straightforward.

Place the Creaking Heart anywhere in the Overworld.
Place a pale oak log directly above it and directly below it.
All three blocks must share the same orientation and axis — for example, all three vertical along the Y axis.
The Heart will shift to its dormant state during the day and become awake at night, spawning a Creaking nearby.

The Creaking spawns within 16 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically of the Heart. It stays within a 32-block radius and will not follow you beyond that distance. If it wanders too far, it despawns and the Heart spawns a replacement.

Note that Creaking Hearts only spawn Creakings in the Overworld. Placing one in the Nether or End will not work.

How to Craft a Creaking Heart

You do not have to find one in the wild. Creaking Hearts can be crafted at a crafting table using materials gathered in the Pale Garden.

To get a resin block, craft 9 resin clumps together. Resin clumps drop from the Creaking Heart each time you hit the linked Creaking — 2–3 clumps per hit with a five-second cooldown. They are also found inside Woodland Mansions.

Crafted Creaking Hearts work exactly the same as ones you collect with Silk Touch. Place one between two pale oak logs and it will activate at night. This lets you set up a Creaking spawner anywhere in the Overworld — outside the Pale Garden if you want.

What Happens When You Destroy a Creaking Heart

The linked Creaking dies instantly — it breaks apart in a collapse animation.
The kill is credited to the player who broke the Heart, counting toward Monster Hunter and Monsters Hunted advancements.
If broken without Silk Touch, it drops 1–3 resin clumps (up to 6 with Fortune III).
If broken with Silk Touch, it drops the Heart block itself.
Destroying a naturally generated Heart in Survival mode rewards 20–24 XP.

Using the Creaking Heart as a Base Defence

Because the Heart works like a mob spawner for the Creaking, players use it creatively in their bases. Place it between two pale oak logs near a perimeter wall or entrance. At night, the Creaking will patrol within 32 blocks and attack any player who gets close and looks away.
