What Is an Ancient City in Minecraft?
An Ancient City is the biggest structure in all of Minecraft. It stretches around 220 blocks wide and is buried deep underground. It was added in the Wild Update in June 2022.
The city sits inside the Deep Dark biome — a pitch-black cave with no natural light. The floor is covered in sculk blocks and wool rugs. There are long corridors, smaller ruins off to the sides, and a dramatic frame at the center that looks like a Warden’s head.
The best part? The chests inside hold some items you cannot find anywhere else in the game.
It is also one of the most dangerous places in Minecraft. The Warden lives here. One wrong step and you are in serious trouble.

Where Does an Ancient City Spawn?
Before you start digging, you need to know exactly where to look.
Ancient Cities only generate in the Deep Dark biome. The floor of every Ancient City is always at Y level -51. That is very, very deep.
The Deep Dark biome tends to generate under areas with low erosion in the world. In simple words — look under mountains.
The best surface biomes to dig under are:
- Jagged Peaks
- Frozen Peaks
- Stony Peaks
- Snowy Slopes
- Grove biomes
Ancient Cities will never generate under oceans, rivers, or swamps. So do not waste your time digging in those areas.
Also, two Ancient Cities will never overlap each other. But they can generate right next to each other in rare cases.

Method 1: Use the /locate Command (Fastest Way)
This is the quickest method to find an Ancient City. It gives you exact coordinates in seconds.
Step 1: Open your world settings and turn on Cheats (Bedrock Edition) or enable LAN with cheats on (Java Edition).
Step 2: Open the chat and type:
/locate structure minecraft:ancient_cityStep 3: The game will show you the nearest Ancient City coordinates. Travel to those X and Z coordinates, then dig down to Y -51.
One big warning: Using commands disables achievements in your world. If achievements or advancements matter to you, skip this method and use the ones below.

Method 2: Dig Under Mountains (Survival Method)
If you want to find an Ancient City the honest way, this is how you do it.
Step 1: Find a mountain biome at the surface. Jagged Peaks and Snowy Slopes are your best bet.
Step 2: Dig straight down — but carefully. Never dig in a straight line directly below you. Always dig at an angle or use a staircase pattern to avoid falling into lava or a cave drop.
Step 3: Head toward Y level -52. At this depth, start mining outward and caving through natural tunnels.
Step 4: Watch for sculk. When you see sculk blocks on the floor, you are in the Deep Dark biome. That means an Ancient City could be nearby.
Step 5: Keep exploring. Ancient Cities are large — around 220 blocks wide. If you spot even one corner of it, follow it and you will find the full structure.
When you see gray wool on the floor with blue and cyan wool rugs, and soul lanterns hanging in the dark — you have found it.
Method 3: Use a Seed Finder Tool (No Cheats Needed)
If you do not want to use commands but also do not want to dig blindly, a seed finder tool is a great middle ground.
Tools like Chunkbase Ancient City Finder let you enter your world seed and instantly see the coordinates of every Ancient City on an interactive map.
Here is how to use it:
Step 1: Find your world seed. In Minecraft, open the chat and type /seed. Copy the number shown.
Step 2: Go to a seed finder website and select Ancient City as the structure type.
Step 3: Choose your edition (Java or Bedrock) and enter your seed.
Step 4: The map will show you every Ancient City in your world with exact coordinates.
Step 5: Travel to those coordinates in-game and dig down to Y -51.
This method works great and keeps achievements fully active.

How to Survive the Ancient City Once You Find It
Finding the Ancient City is only half the challenge. Staying alive inside it is the hard part.
The Deep Dark is full of sculk sensors and sculk shriekers. Any vibration — walking, jumping, placing blocks, even landing from a fall — can trigger them. Trigger a sculk shrieker three times and the Warden spawns.
The Warden has 250 hearts of health. It deals up to 22.5 hearts of damage on Hard mode. It can kill a fully armored player in just two hits. And its Sonic Boom attack goes through walls. There is no fair fight with the Warden — the only strategy is to avoid it entirely. If you want to understand exactly how the Warden works and where it comes from, check out our full guide on how to spawn the Warden in Minecraft.
Here is how to move safely through the Ancient City:
Always sneak. Hold your Shift key from the moment you enter the Deep Dark until the moment you leave. Sculk sensors cannot detect a sneaking player. This is the single most important rule.
Bring wool. Wool absorbs vibrations completely. Place wool on sculk sensors you cannot avoid walking near. Carry at least a stack of wool with you.
Never break blocks. Breaking any block creates a vibration that sculk sensors will detect. If something is in your way, go around it.
Use snowballs as distractions. If a shrieker is about to activate, throw a snowball at a far wall. The sound it makes will draw sensor attention away from you.
Bring a Night Vision Potion. The Deep Dark has no light. Torches help but are not enough. A Night Vision Potion lets you see everything clearly and helps you spot shriekers before you walk into them. You can check our guide on how to brew potions in Minecraft if you need a hand with that.
Bring good gear. You want diamond or netherite armor with Protection enchantments before going down here. If the Warden does spot you, you want every bit of armor you can get. Learn more in our guide on how to use an enchanting table in Minecraft.
What Loot Can You Find in the Ancient City?
The risk is absolutely worth the reward. Ancient City chests hold some of the most valuable items in the game.
Here is what you can find:
Swift Sneak (Enchanted Book) — This enchantment only exists in Ancient City loot. It goes up to level three and makes you move faster while sneaking. It is leggings-only. Once you have Swift Sneak III, future visits to the Ancient City become much safer.
Echo Shards — Strange glowing items that are found only here. Combine eight echo shards with a compass and you craft a Recovery Compass. This compass points to the location of your last death — perfect for going back to collect your dropped items after a tough fight.
Disc Fragment (5) — These fragments only come from Ancient Cities. Collect nine of them and craft the music disc called “5” — a creepy, unsettling disc that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the Deep Dark.
Enchanted Golden Apple — One of the rarest items in the game. Ancient City chests have the second highest chance of any loot table to contain one. These are incredibly powerful in combat.
Diamond Leggings and Diamond Hoe — Pre-enchanted with level 30–50 enchantments. You can find Mending, Protection, Silk Touch, and Efficiency on these items.
Silence and Wild Armor Trims — Two exclusive cosmetic armor trims that can only be found here.
Sculk Sensors and Sculk Catalysts — Useful items for redstone builds. If you are into Minecraft redstone circuits, these are worth collecting.

Quick Tips Before You Go Down
A few extra things that will save you a lot of trouble:
Mark the location on a map. Ancient Cities are huge but they are easy to get lost around. Make a map in Minecraft before heading down so you can track your position.
Bring a shield. Even with careful sneaking, accidents happen. A shield can block damage from unexpected hits. Here is how to make a shield in Minecraft.
Do not sprint. Sprinting creates vibrations. Walk, sneak, or stand still. Never sprint inside the Deep Dark.
Clear shriekers when you can. If you can safely mine a sculk shrieker without triggering it (using Silk Touch), remove it. This reduces the risk for future visits.
Build a safe room. If you plan to stay a while, dig a small room out of regular stone — not sculk — at the edge of the city. Sleep there between looting runs to reset the night and avoid phantoms.
If you want to make your trips more efficient, consider building an automatic farm near your main base so you stay stocked on supplies between Ancient City runs.
How to Get to the Ancient City Fast
Once you have the coordinates, the fastest way down is to dig a staircase mine at a 45-degree angle. Bring a blast furnace to smelt any ores you collect on the way down. It smelts twice as fast as a regular furnace for metal ores.
You can also use an existing cave system if one is nearby. Deep cave networks often connect all the way to Y -51 level and can be faster than digging. If you are playing on a fresh world, make sure you have survived your first few nights before attempting this — check out our first night survival guide if you need help getting started.
Ancient City FAQ
Can Ancient Cities spawn in every world? Yes, but they are not guaranteed close to your spawn. Some worlds have them very close to spawn and others require travel. Use a seed finder to check your world.
Can the Warden follow you out of the Ancient City? Yes. The Warden is not confined to the Ancient City. If it spawns, it will follow you. Your best option is to run far away and wait for it to despawn after about 60 seconds with no detected activity.
Can two Ancient Cities be next to each other? They cannot overlap, but they can generate directly adjacent to each other. Some rare seeds spawn multiple cities near the same location.
Do Ancient Cities regenerate their loot? No. Once you loot the chests, they stay empty. The city does not reset.
Is it worth visiting the Ancient City before the Nether? Yes and no. The loot is powerful but the danger is very high. Make sure you have decent gear first. The loot pairs well with the final push to defeat the Ender Dragon. If you have not been to the Nether yet, start there first — here is our guide on how to get to the Nether in Minecraft.
Final Thoughts
The Ancient City is one of the most rewarding — and terrifying — places in Minecraft. The loot is genuinely unique. Swift Sneak, Echo Shards, and enchanted golden apples are hard to get anywhere else.
The key to a successful run is simple: go slow, sneak always, and never pick a fight with the Warden.
Find a mountain, dig deep, and follow the sculk. The Ancient City is waiting at Y -51.
