TL;DR
- Woodland Mansions only spawn in the Dark Forest (and Pale Garden) biome
- They are very rare — the median distance from spawn is around 4,000 blocks
- The best no-cheats method is getting a Woodland Explorer Map from a Cartographer villager
- Use
/locate structure woodland_mansion(Java) or/locate mansion(Bedrock) for fast coords - Use a seed finder tool like Chunkbase if you do not want to use commands
- Inside: Vindicators on all floors, Evokers on floors 2 and 3, and Allays in jail rooms
- Evokers always drop a Totem of Undying — the main reason to visit
What Is a Woodland Mansion?
A Woodland Mansion is one of the biggest and rarest structures in Minecraft. It is a massive three-story building made mostly of dark oak wood and cobblestone. It was added back in Java Edition 1.11.
The mansion is full of rooms — storage rooms, bedrooms, mushroom farms, and more. Some rooms are secret and have no visible entrance at all. You have to break through walls to find them.
The mansion is home to three mob types: Vindicators, Evokers, and Allays. The interior is dark enough that zombies, creepers, and skeletons also wander in from outside.
The biggest reward for clearing one is the Totem of Undying. When held in your hand, it prevents death once. Every Evoker you kill drops one — guaranteed.
Where Does a Woodland Mansion Spawn?
Woodland Mansions only generate in two biomes:
- Dark Forest (also called Roofed Forest) — the primary biome
- Pale Garden — added in a more recent update
They are almost always thousands of blocks away from your spawn point. The median distance is around 4,162 blocks, but it is common to find them 10,000 to 20,000 blocks away.
They will never spawn in oceans, deserts, plains, or underground. You are looking for a thick, dark forest at the surface.
One important thing to know: once you kill all the Vindicators and Evokers inside, they do not respawn. The mansion can be cleared once and then kept permanently as a base.

Method 1: Get a Woodland Explorer Map (Best No-Cheats Method)
This is the most reliable way to find a Woodland Mansion without using commands or third-party tools.
Step 1: Find a village with a Cartographer villager.
You need a Cartographer. If the village does not have one, place a Cartography Table near an unemployed villager and it will take the job. You can learn more about how villager jobs and trading tiers work in our Villager Trading Tiers guide.
Step 2: Trade with the Cartographer until you unlock Journeyman (Tier 3).
The Woodland Explorer Map is a Journeyman-level trade. You need to trade with the villager a few times to unlock it. Each time you complete a trade and level up the villager, colored particles appear around them.
Step 3: Buy the Woodland Explorer Map.
The map costs around 14 emeralds and 1 compass. Once you have it, hold it in your hand and look at the ground to open it fully on screen.
Step 4: Follow the map.
Your position is shown as a white dot. The mansion icon marks the destination. Use the F3 screen (Java) or the compass direction to keep yourself heading the right way. Keep walking — the mansion is likely very far.
Important note: The map does not always point to the closest mansion. It points to a mansion, which might not be the nearest one.
Method 2: Use the /locate Command (Fastest Method)
This gives you exact coordinates in seconds. The trade-off is that it disables achievements in your world.
Step 1: Enable cheats. In Bedrock Edition, go to World Settings. In Java Edition, open to LAN and enable cheats there.
Step 2: Open the chat and type:
Java Edition:
/locate structure woodland_mansionBedrock Edition:
/locate mansionStep 3: The game will return the X and Z coordinates of the nearest Woodland Mansion. Travel to those coordinates at the surface level and look for the massive dark oak building in a forest.
Method 3: Use a Seed Finder Tool (No Cheats, No Trading)
If you want coordinates without commands and without grinding villager trades, a seed finder is the answer. This method keeps achievements active.
Step 1: Find your world seed. Type /seed in the chat to get it.
Step 2: Go to a site like Chunkbase and open the Structure Finder.
Step 3: Select Woodland Mansion as the structure type, enter your seed, and pick your edition (Java or Bedrock).
Step 4: The map shows every Woodland Mansion in your world with exact coordinates. Copy them and travel there in-game.
This method is great for planning before you even leave your base.

How to Travel to the Woodland Mansion
The mansion is often thousands of blocks away. Walking is slow. Here are better options:
Use the Nether. One block of travel in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. Build a portal, travel in the Nether, and come back out. You can cut the journey to a fraction of the time. Check our guide on how to get to the Nether in Minecraft if you need help.
Use an Elytra. Flying with Elytra and firework rockets is the fastest overland travel in the game. Make sure your Elytra has Mending or Unbreaking enchanted on it — a long trip will wear it out fast. You can learn how to enchant your gear using our enchanting table guide.
Use a map. Before you leave, make a map in Minecraft so you can track your position during the journey and find your way back home.
What Enemies Are Inside the Woodland Mansion?
You need to know what you are walking into before you go.
Vindicators — These are axe-wielding illagers that spawn on all three floors. They hit hard and their axe can disable your shield. They travel in groups of one to three per room. Kill them with ranged attacks first if you can. Once killed, they do not respawn.
Evokers — More dangerous and only found on floors 2 and 3. They use two attacks: evoker fangs that rise from the ground in a line or circle around you, and Vexes — tiny flying ghost creatures that can pass through walls and deal constant damage. Kill Evokers from a distance with a bow. Every Evoker drops one Totem of Undying when killed.
Allays — Friendly mobs trapped in jail rooms, usually guarded by a Vindicator. Free them. Allays collect dropped items and can be incredibly useful for automatic farm setups.
Other mobs — Because the mansion interior is so dark, regular Overworld mobs like zombies, skeletons, and creepers can also spawn inside or wander in through the open entrance. Light up every room as you go.
What Gear to Bring
Do not show up underprepared. Here is what you should bring:
Weapons: A diamond or netherite sword with Sharpness is ideal for Vindicators. A bow with Power and Flame helps with Evokers. Keep them at range. Consider making a shield in Minecraft as backup — just be careful using it against Vindicators since their axes can disable it.
Armor: Full diamond or netherite with Protection enchantments. The Evoker’s fang attack goes through armor but Protection reduces it.
Potions: Bring Healing and Regeneration potions for recovery between rooms. Strength potions help speed up fights. Check our potion brewing guide if you need help crafting them.
Torches: Lots of them. Light every room you clear. This stops new mobs from spawning in cleared areas and helps you track which rooms you have already done.
Ender Chest + Shulker Boxes: The mansion has lots of loot and your inventory fills up fast. Bring an Ender Chest and Shulker Boxes to store items safely. Use Silk Touch to pick the chest back up before you leave.
Food: Bring plenty. Long fights and travel drain your hunger fast.
How to Loot the Woodland Mansion
Here is a room-by-room strategy that works well:
Start on floor 1. Most storage rooms are on the ground floor. Clear every Vindicator you find. Torch everything as you go. Check for secret rooms — look for solid walls where windows should be, or gaps between rooms that seem too large. Break through to find hidden loot.
Move to floor 2. This is where Evokers start appearing. Move carefully. Use your bow to engage Evokers from a distance before they see you. Kill them first — this gets you Totems of Undying early in the run, which protects you from dying while clearing the rest.
Clear floor 3. Similar to floor 2. More Evokers, more Vindicators. Keep lighting everything up.
Check every wall. The mansion generates secret rooms on any floor. These have no doors and no windows. Punch the walls around suspicious gaps and blank spaces. Secret rooms include a fake End Portal room, a spider room, a lava room, and an obsidian room among others.
Skip the storage room chests. Regular storage room chests in the mansion contain nothing useful. Do not waste time on them — and do not get caught off guard by a Vindicator while standing with your inventory open.

What Loot Can You Find?
The Woodland Mansion has some excellent rewards:
Totem of Undying — Dropped by every Evoker. Hold it in your off-hand. If you die while holding it, you are saved — it restores 1 heart, removes all status effects, and grants Absorption, Regeneration, and Fire Resistance for a few seconds. It gets used up on activation, so collect as many as you can.
Diamond Chestplates and Hoes — Pre-enchanted with solid enchantments. Great for mid-game gear upgrades.
Vex Armor Trim — A cosmetic armor trim that is only found in Woodland Mansions. Exclusive to this structure.
Emeralds — Dropped by Evokers and Vindicators when killed. Useful for villager trading when you get back home.
Allays — Not loot exactly, but extremely valuable. These friendly mobs pick up items for you when given a sample item to search for. Perfect companions for farms.
Music discs, enchanted books, and other chest loot — Various useful items scattered through the mansion chests.
Tips to Stay Alive Inside
A few things that can save your life:
Get your first Totem early. Go to floor 2 as soon as possible, kill an Evoker, and get the Totem into your off-hand. It is insurance for the rest of the run.
Watch for creepers. They spawn inside because of the low light. A creeper explosion in an enclosed corridor is extremely dangerous. Light everything as you go.
Do not rush. Clear rooms one at a time. Close doors behind you to stop mobs wandering from room to room while you fight. Peek around corners before walking in.
Fight Evokers at range. The fang attack is hard to dodge in close quarters. Stay 5 or more blocks away and use your bow. This also keeps Vexes from swarming you while you are tangled up with the Evoker.
Mark your entrance. Drop a block of bright color at the door before you go in. Mansions are large and all the corridors can look the same. It is easy to get turned around.
Woodland Mansion vs Ancient City — Which Should You Visit First?
Both are major structures worth exploring — but they suit different stages of the game.
The Woodland Mansion is an above-ground combat challenge. You need decent weapons and armor but the risk is manageable with good preparation. The rewards — Totems of Undying, Allays, diamond gear — are great for mid-game players.
The Ancient City is underground, requires stealth over combat, and is far more dangerous. It is better suited for late-game players with strong gear and good enchantments. If you want to tackle that next, read our full guide on how to find an Ancient City in Minecraft.
Woodland Mansion FAQ
Is there always a Woodland Mansion in every world? Yes. Every world generates at least one. But it can be extremely far from spawn — sometimes more than 20,000 blocks away.
Can I live in the Woodland Mansion after clearing it? Yes, and it is a great base. Once all the Evokers and Vindicators are killed, they do not respawn. Light it up fully, seal the entrance, and it is yours. You can even move in villagers and set up a trading hall. If you are looking for unique base ideas, check out our Minecraft base builds guide.
Do mobs respawn in the Woodland Mansion? Vindicators and Evokers do not respawn after being killed. However, regular Overworld mobs like zombies and creepers will keep spawning in dark areas. Keep the mansion fully lit to stop this.
What is the fastest way to find a Woodland Mansion? The /locate command is the absolute fastest. If you want to keep achievements, use a Chunkbase seed finder and travel using the Nether shortcut.
Can a Woodland Mansion spawn near my base? It is possible but uncommon. There is roughly a 4.6% chance of one spawning within 1,000 blocks of spawn. Most players find them far away.
What is the Pale Garden biome and does it have Woodland Mansions? The Pale Garden is a newer biome added to Minecraft. Woodland Mansions can generate there as well. It is a greyed-out, eerie forest variant that is similarly rare.
Final Thoughts
The Woodland Mansion is one of the most rewarding structures in Minecraft — but also one of the furthest to reach and hardest to clear.
Get a Woodland Explorer Map from a Cartographer villager. That is the best starting point for survival players. Level up your gear, brew some potions, and make the trip. The Totem of Undying alone is worth the effort — and the mansion makes an incredible base once it is cleared.
Plan well, fight smart, and the mansion is yours.
